Photosynthetic reaction center of green sulfur bacteria studied by EPR.

Membrane preparations of two species of the green sulfur bacteria Chlorobium have been studied by EPR. Three signals were detected which were attributed to iron-sulfur centers acting as electron acceptors in the photosynthetic reaction center. (1) A signal from a center designated FB, (gz = 2.07, gy = 1.91, gx = 1.86) was photoinduced at 4 K. (2) A similar signal, FA (gz = 2.05, gy = 1.94, gx = 1.88), was photoinduced in addition to the FB signal upon a short period of illumination at 200 K. (3) Further illumination at 200 K resulted in the appearance of a broad feature at g = 1.78. This is attributed to the gx component of an iron-sulfur center designated FX. The designations of these signals as FB, FA, and FX are based on their spectroscopic similarities to signals in photosystem I (PS I). The orientation dependence of these EPR signals in ordered Chlorobium membrane multilayers is remarkably similar to that of their PS I homologues. A magnetic interaction between the reduced forms of FB and FA occurs, which is also very similar to that seen in PS I. However, in contrast to the situation in PS I, FA and FB cannot be chemically reduced by sodium dithionite at pH 11. This indicates redox potentials for FA and FB which are lower by at least 150 mV than their PS I counterparts. The triplet state of P840, the primary electron donor, could be photoinduced at 4 K in samples which had been preincubated with sodium dithionite and methyl viologen and then preilluminated at 200 K.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Amino acid identities in the three redox center-carrying polypeptides of cytochrome bc1/b6f complexes.

The comparison of primary structures is extended to 22 cytochromes b or b6, 12 cytochromes c1 or f, and 8 Rieske FeS proteins. Conclusions are drawn as to their phylogenetic relationship as well as on conserved, functionally important amino acids and secondary structures. The results are in favor of two independent quinone binding sites at opposite surfaces of the membrane, topping one of the two hemes of cytochrome b each.

Spin-density distribution in the [FeO2]-complex. Electron spin resonance of myoglobin single crystals.

X-irradiated oxymyoglobin (MbO2) exhibits electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra at 77 K due to two distinct [FeO2]-centers formed by electron addition to the dioxygen. In single crystals with 17O and 57Fe isotope enrichment in the heme-ligand complex, the full set of spectral parameters is analyzed for one of the centers (gmax = 2.23, gint = 2.13, gmin = 1.97; HOmax = 2.66 mT, HOint = 1.61 mT, HOmin = 0.57 mT; HFe max = 1.62 mT, HFe int = 0.57 mT, HFe min = 0.49 mT) and the iron-dioxygen spin-density distribution and bonding geometry is derived. The g-tensor is evaluated for the second species at 77 K (gmax = 2.25, gint = 2.11, gmin = 1.95). Both centers transform into secondary species at 180 K for which the g-tensor elements are analyzed (gmax = 2.31, gint = 2.18, gmin = 1.93; gmax = 2.35, gint = 2.21, gmin = 1.91).

A dynamic Ponzo illusion: induced direction of rotation in depth.

Observers viewed parallel projections of a five-rung gate rotating in depth about its vertical center rung and judged the direction of apparent rotation. The background of a Ponzo illusion superimposed upon these parallel motion projections affected the direction of apparent rotation, with that end of the gate approaching the apex of the background appearing to recede from the viewer. This result is consistent with the thesis that the static Ponzo illusion is, at least in part, an illusion of depth.

The ontogeny of ultrasounds in two strains of Rattus norvegicus.

The developmental course of ultrasonic signaling by neonatal rat pups (Rattus norvegicus) was monitored under varying degrees of hypothermic stress. Signal rate, peak frequency, duration, and complexity of signals were analyzed separately for two different laboratory stocks. Sprague-Dawley and Wistar/Furth. Additionally, preliminary data were obtained on maternal retrieval latencies during the 1st 4 days post-partum and compared with the emission rate of neonatal ultrasounds. On the basis of these and other data, there is evidence that mothers play an important role in mediating many early experience effects. The data suggests that rate of neonatal ultrasounds may provide an index of some aspects of rat of maturity; that there may be different periods of maximum sensitivity to external stimulation in various stocks of laboratory animals; and that differential maternal responsiveness in different stocks of laboratory animals may correlate with differences in neonatal ultrasonic calling. Implications for comparative, genetic, and developmental studies are discussed.
