Some aspects of humoral and cellular immunity in children suffering from spastic bronchitis.

In a group of 17 children, 6-18 months of age suffering from spastic bronchitis, subpopulations of lymphocytes, immunoglobulin titer and alfa 1 antitrypsin in the sera were estimated. In comparison to a group of healthy children of similar age, the patients had decreased percentage of T lymphocytes and increased percentage of B lymphocytes. Moreover, in a group of sick children we found more frequently D and E immunoglobulins in the sera. On the other hand A, G and M immunoglobulins as well as alfa 1 antitrypsin showed normal levels in the serum.

Effect of in vitro x-irradiation on human peripheral blood T and B lymphocytes.

The effect of in vitro irradiation with increasing in logarythmic progress X-ray doses on lymphocyte viability and on T and B lymphocyte populations was studied in normal adults, patients with myasthenia gravis and in patients undergoing long-term steroid therapy. Decrease in numbers of lymphocytes carrying T or B lymphocyte surface markers was higher than viable cell loss. The decrease showed no linear correlation with X-ray doses applied, which might reflect the existence of radioresistant T and B lymphocytes. A higher so called early radiosensitivity of B lymphocytes was demonstrated. In patients with myasthenia gravis early radioresistance of T lymphocytes was detected. In patients undergoing long-term steroid therapy, an increase in numbers of cells lacking markers of any of lymphocyte populations was found in parallel with a decrease in T lymphocyte number which, in these patients, showed a higher radiosensitivity.

Surface immunoglobulins and lymphocyte adhesiveness during development.

Surface immunoglobulins and lymphocyte adhesiveness were studied in 86 children divided according age into six groups. The percentages of B lymphocytes in newborns and older children were similar, but spontaneous lymphocyte adhesiveness in newborns was much lower. The group of one-year-old children had distinctly lower percentages of lymphocytes with surface immunoglobulins of the I gA + IgM / IgG classes compared with all the other developmental groups.
