Comparison of stress transmission in the IMZ implant system with polyoxymethylene or titanium intramobile element: a finite element stress analysis.

Using the finite element method, this study modeled a 4.0 x 13.0-mm IMZ implant, restored with a cast gold crown, to examine the influence of the polyoxymethylene (POM) intramobile element (IME) on the transmission of vertical and oblique forces. Stress concentrations in the bone and in components of the implant system were much greater under a 30-degree load than under an equal vertical load. Stress transmission to bone occurred chiefly in the crestal region, and these stresses were not reduced when the IME was modeled in POM rather than in titanium. Maximum stress concentrations occurred in the fastening screw.

Local and systemic effects of orally applied sodium salts.

This study determines whether the oral application of a baking soda-3% hydrogen peroxide dentifrice and a nearly saturated sodium chloride mouthwash, as a home care method for treating periodontal disease, creates a sodium burden for human subjects. The dietary intake and urinary excretion of sodium and potassium were monitored in participating subjects. Urinary sodium did not increase in subjects using the method. Desquamative gingival lesions, however, were seen in all treated subjects. Further study is needed to determine safe salt concentrations for this home care regimen.

Bacterial study of pyogenic infections of dental origin.

Fluctuant abscesses of dental origin were sampled by syringe aspiration. These samples were cultured by means of techniques suitable for isolation and growth of obligate anaerobes. Oral abscesses are usually mixed infections that include a number of different species. More than 65 per cent of the species isolated were obligate anaerobes, which indicates the need for anaerobic methods in studying these infections. Anaerobic gram-negative rods and facultative streptococci were the groups isolated most frequently.
