[Criteria for the evaluation of programs for rehabilitation of apprehended drivers].

The preparation of criteria for the judgment of programs provided for rehabilitation (re-education) of delinquent drivers is in regard of the development of these measures--likewise in European foreign countries--necessary to secure their suitableness, their effectiveness, their controlled optimization, their credibility and their quality. Only programs (courses) can be suitable, which apply for the psychological knowledge about measures for behavior modification so that it relates perfectly to the target group. These measures have to be investigated for their effectiveness--especially if they result in legal consequences. Therefore the fundamental demand of Wittmann (1985) has to be repeated: Evaluation is a necessary, unquestioned task of all social institutions, which long for a rational manifestation and justification of their activity. Finally, behavior modification of delinquent drivers require a continuous safe-guarding of their quality within the scope of the acknowledged norms in Europe.

[Long-term effect of courses for repeat alcoholic intoxication in automobile drivers. Studies after 60 months probation].

Authors report on the analysis of long-term effectiveness of rehabilitation programs for multiple drinking-driving offenders. Even after an observation-period of 60 months since license renewal after treatment, program participants show a lower reconviction-rate than drivers who had been judged qualified to drive after medical and psychological assessment. Hence, there is no evidence for a mere deceleration of recidivism but on the contrary for long-term effectiveness. The analysis comprised the influence of individual variables such as age, previous DWI offenses, BAC in the event of DWI, previous criminal offenses, medical symptoms of alcohol-dependence and on the other hand systematic effects such as intensity of law enforcement by the police and regional drinking-habits. Furthermore the effects of three different treatment programs on the long-term reconviction rate are analysed and presented. The study discusses a number of critical arguments with respect to methodology and recommends consequences for future assessment and treatment. On the background of the problems of an extended observation period in the field--changes of variables of influence on drinking and drinking-driving behavior are possible, which cannot be compensated by treatment--the results are judged highly satisfying. They do not only justify continuing treatment after assessment but lead to the recommendation to extend treatment.

Neurodermatitis--a concept.

The skin is an obvious "shock organ" for emotional stresses, as well as the other organ systems. Lividity, blushing, blanching, "goose flesh" are common observations. Personal emotional stress is carried in the mind of the patient, but often, after a period of time, this stress becomes manifest as skin disease. This delay interval is usually two to four weeks, if the histories are accurate. The patient can often be benefited by accepting the relationship of emotional stress and skin disease, along with appropriate treatment.

The kidney in tuberous sclerosis.

Tuberous sclerosis is essentially a hereditary disease dominated by hamartomas in various organs. Symptoms of the disease are referable to expanding growth of these hamartomas, especially in the kidney where these benign lesions most often present with pyuria, hematuria or pain from bleeding. They are apt to be erroneously diagnosed as malignant both clinically and microscopically. Renal symptomatology is most often to be found in the adult patient.
