The identification of Josef Mengele. A triumph of international cooperation.

In recent weeks, world attention has been focused on the identification of skeletal remains suspected of being those of the most widely sought Nazi war criminal still at large--Josef Mengele. Several important turns in the investigation of his whereabouts led to a small city south of São Paulo, where he had been living until 1979. Mengele was reported to have drowned and to have been buried in a country cemetery near his last residence. The initial processing of the remains was done at the Medicolegal Institute of São Paulo by police officials in consultation with anthropologists and dentists as well as Dr. Wilmes Teixeira of Mogi das Cruzes, a suburb of São Paulo. Dr. Teixeira coordinated the team of authorized international forensic experts officially representing the governments of West Germany and the United States, as well as the Simon Wiesenthal Center of Los Angeles, who joined Brazilian scientists in completing identification. The success of the investigation was due to complete cooperation among members of the team, resulting in verification, within a reasonable scientific certainty, that these were the remains of Josef Mengele.

Age Determination by Skeleton

Sex identification utilizing the size of the foramen magnum.

The sex of unidentified skeletons is not always easily and correctly determined by the general medical examiner with no formal training in forensic anthropology. Sometimes the diagnostic procedure may be extremely complicated when handling fragmented bones. The present preliminary observations concern the evaluation of the size of the foramen magnum in 40 skulls (20 of each sex). Our results indicate that this method may be useful in the sexing of skeletal remains under the above-mentioned conditions as well as when an expert in forensic anthropology or a crime laboratory is not available.

Anthropometry

Hymenal colposcopic examination in sexual offenses.

Colposcopy, a method of more detailed examination of the cervix, widely used in the world but the application of this technique to forensic examinations is not. This presentation offers the benefits of the use of colposcopy in the examination of sexual assaults on women in a city in Brazil by a Medical Examiner of Mogi das Cruzes in the State of São Paulo near the megapolis of the same name. In 11.80%, or 59 of the 500 cases examined by the author, this technique has been of value to determine unsuspected trauma, fringed hymen, infantile hymen, healing, and accurate information in questionable cases.

Adolescent

CT features of cellulosae and racemosus neurocysticercosis.

Of 210 cases of cerebral neurocysticercosis studied with CT since 1982, three cases proved to be due to the rare Cysticercus racemosus (surgical verification) rather than to the much more prevalent infestation by Cysticercus cellulosae. We attempted to establish CT criteria for differentiating the more severe and always fatal form of C. racemosus. The CT appearance occasionally encountered in C. racemosus resembles a "bunch of grapes"; this appears to be the only criterion of differential value.
