["Self-asphyxia"--a forensic medicine-criminal challenge].

In judicial and police circles - sometimes even in circles of medical professionals - it is still often thought that suicidal strangulation by ligature is impossible. Reviewing the forensic literature we could find more than 200 cases that have been published earlier. We report another 4 cases of suicidal strangulation. The main problems of criminalists and medical examiners in such cases are discussed. Primary investigation of the corpse in original position by a forensic scientist is of high importance.

[The "inner gunshot residue"--a gunshot entry marker in gunshot of ridged skin].

Gunshot residue below the surface of the skin is typical of a contact gunshot wound. However, in a case of our own, when a taxi-robber was shot by the cab driver through his right hand at a distance of several yards, this finding provoked quite a confusion. Only when experimental shots at thick glabrous skin were performed, it could be established that long range shots led to intraepidermal gunshot deposit too. The explanation of this phenomenon lies in the tenacity of thick skin. Unlike the thin hairy skin, which is punched out by the penetrating projectile, the thicker and more tenacious plantar/palmar epidermis gets displaced radially, the stratum germinativum tears and the projectile casts its gunshot residue in the pouch formed in such a manner. Therefore, intraepidermal gunshot residue is proof of an entrance gunshot wound but not always a sign of contact shot if the wound is located in the palmar or plantar region. It is typically produced by shots at thick skin.

[Separation of stomach contents using the sieve-tower technique].

The authors present a method to separate and preserve stomach contents for forensic purpose. Analysis by "sieve tower" technique is simple and quickly done during autopsy. Solid phases of stomach content are arranged size up and can be stored for subsequent examinations. With the fluid phase drug analysis or microscopic analysis to confirm identy of the foodstuffs may be done. By adding alcohol (70%) enzymatic digestion and bacterial degradation of the stomach content are stopped.

[Unusual wound morphology after textile penetration by the automatic rifle (StG) 58. A case report].

Technical characteristics of the used fire-arm and ammunition, the firing range and the shot through garments of the victim are essential factors, that exercise an influence on the appearance of gunshot injuries. An exemplary case-report shall emphasize the importance of these factors. It deals with a suicidal double-shot fired from an automatic rifle by a young soldier. The wounds were localized in the left chest region and the adjacent skin was blackened by soot in a remarkable geometrical pattern, although an ammunition with a smokeless charge has been used. By means of comparative shots we have good reasons to suppose this phenomenon to be caused by rests of gun powder and pressure of the explosion gas leaved in the barrel after the first shot. The second projectile pushed out this explosion gas to the skin that had been uncovered in a star-shaped way by the first shot.

[Asphyxia protracted after shaking trauma].

A case of "shaken baby syndrome" (SBS) is reported. A 3 1/2 months old female baby has been found by his mother death in bed. The circumstances predicted a case of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), but the father, a disc-jockey, who had to look for the baby, had left a notice: "Gitti--i didn't want it, I don't know what had happened, I'm sorry!". The corpse of the baby had no external signs of violence. At the medicolegal examination we found small subarachnoidal and subdural hemorrhage from ruptured bridge veins and signs of prolonged asphyxia. Few hours later the father could be arrested. He told that he had shaken the baby, because she didn't stop crying. The infant lost conscious and he layed him down to the bed with his face below. Then he looked TV for at least a few minutes. After insufficient reanimation he had left the house. The court found the man to be guilty of fatal infant child abuse and convicted him to detention of 8 months. The main signs of SBS are discussed (subarachnoidal and subdural hemorrhage, intraretinal and periretinal hemorrhages, brain edema). Especially in the german speaking Europe many medical examiners are not familiar with this form of infant child abuse.

[Fatal injuries caused by glass fragments. Case reports and autopsy findings].

The authors report three cases of fatal domestic accidents by falling through glass doors. Multiple cuts and stabwounds in one of these cases primarily suggested a crime of violence. In contrast the bodies of the two other perished persons showed only unsignificant injuries. Causes of death were aerous embolism (1 case) and mechanical bleeding to death (2 cases). The common morphological signs of these glass injuries are exemplified and preventive measures are discussed.

[Fatalities in west Austrian prisons].

The purpose of this study is to review 23 causes of death that have occurred in Western-Austrian prisons from 1974 to 1989. The majority of them (11 cases) were due to suicides. Among 9 cases of natural death there was a 25 years old man, who died of an unknown purulent meningoencephalitis. Two drunken prisoners had not been supervised and therefore died of alcohol poisoning. In one case the police jail physician did not recognize an epidural hematoma.

[Unusual circumstances in the discovery of a cadaver. Autopsy and results of findings].

The uncommon case of a 19 year old man is reported, whose corpse has been found lying in the middle of a road nearby an overpass. The investigators suspected a capital crime because of some strange findings--such as crossed legs, a stub of a cigarette between the fingers of the right hand and suspect head-injuries. The further forensic and criminalistic investigations proved, that the young man tumbled down the bridge head over heals and died of brain-injuries.

[Hanging with decapitation. Case report--biomechanics].

We report on a 52-year-old man who committed suicide by jumping in a 380 cm long rope with a diameter of 12 mm. The loading forces resulted in complete decapitation. Our biomechanical experiments show that traction-forces of about 12000 Newton lead to complete decapitation irrespectively of the diameter of the used halter. The biomechanical results made it possible to show the possible fall-hights in dependence upon bodymass and distance of negative acceleration "s" graphically. The curves are valid for a constant deceleration during the distance "s", which is determined by lengthening of the rope and circumference of the neck.

[Wound ballistics of extremely short-range shotguns].

A 45-year-old man died from a homicidal shotgun wound of the neck. The autopsy showed that the plastic shell retaining cup had entered the body after the mass of the shot; the dispersion of the individual pellets was about 12 cm already. The perpetrator had used a conventional signal pistol equipped with a hand-made steel barrel, gauge 12, length 20 cm, and ammunition with 3 mm pellets (shot no. 5). By means of experimental shots with a similar weapon it could be proved that the entire shot including the plastic shell retaining cup can penetrate the skin at a muzzle-victim range of less than 2 m.

[Apparently supernatural healing forces from a prepared shoe].

Authors report on results of the examination of a specially prepared shoe, therapeutically used by a faith-healer. The patients felt unexpected sensations caused by an electrical circuit built in the shoe and released by the doctors big toe. The faith-healer justified his method to be a special kind of "electrophysiological therapy". The public prosecutor withdrew the impeachment on trickery.
