The neuropsychological spectrum in traumatically head-injured persons.

The neuropsychological spectrum was investigated in a traumatically brain-damaged population. In this spectrum neuropsychological measures were regarded as the most biologically oriented, achievement measures as the most acquired skill-oriented, and intellectual measures as having an intermediate position. It was found that the achievement measures correlated the most highly with each other, the intellectual measures intercorrelated to a lesser extent, and the intercorrelations of neuropsychological measures yielded a zero-order median correlation. It was further found that the correlations of measures with those in other categories had the same ranking. It was inferred that brain damage alters the pattern of the neuropsychological spectrum because of disproportionate impairment in the biological direction of the spectrum.

Death depression versus death anxiety: exploration of different correlates.

Possible differences between death depression and death anxiety were explored for 182 students, 81 church members, and 41 employees of an air terminal. Both female gender and older age were more highly associated with greater death anxiety than with greater death depression. Living without a significant other was associated with greater death depression than with death anxiety.

[Heart rate, blood pressure and systolic time interval in rest and during single-hand exertion in persons exposed to lead and in control subjects].

The hypertonic effect of lead has been known since the beginning of the twentieth century, but now - under better situation of exposure - the lead's effects on the cardiovascular system are controversially discussed. For a direct effect of lead on the heart there are only references in animals. We examined lead exposed workers and control persons using heart rate, blood pressure and systolic time intervals (STI) in rest and during handgrip exercise. In rest we found no differences between exposed and controls. During handgrip exercise there is a sign for left ventricular dysfunction in lead exposed a loss of exercise induced physiological decrease of the preejection period (PEP). Further investigations in large groups - also in follow-up - are necessary for further interpretations.

[Functional significance of lung siderosis in electrode welders].

56 electric arc welders found in a cross-sectional study to show pulmonary siderosis in full size x-rays were clinically examined. Looking for the discussed functional, relevance of such lung diseases in welders the diagnostic program included spirometry, flow-volume-curves, body-plethysmography, single breath diffusion capacity, pulmonary compliance and ergooxytensiometry. The results are supporting that "lung siderosis" in welders is associated with slight functional deterioration in the type of interstitial lung diseases.

[Relations between stress intensity, sex and ergometric procedures in healthy probands and patients with obstructive respiratory diseases].

In 223 healthy people and patients with obstructive lung diseases we examined the degree of cardiopulmonary exhaustion during two ergometric stress tests (Ergooxytensiometrie [EOT] and submaximal Ergostasetest [ET]). Main purpose of the study was to look for differences between sexes in the degree of exhaustion in relation to the type of stress test, thus clarifying the need of a special EOT-modification for women. Measured parameters were arterial oxygen pressure (pO2a), arterial carbon dioxide pressure (pCO2a), base excess (BE), heart rate, noninvasive blood pressure, Wmax and in ET additionally oxygen intake (VO2max) and oxygen pulse. In EOT men and women showed similar results regarding pressure frequence product in health people as well as in patients. Heart rate in EOT was also similar for men and women clearly below maximal range, amounting around 70% of age related maximal value. For pO2a as main indicator of pulmonary gas exchange we found no differences in healthy people as well as in patients with obstructive lung disease between both ergometric methods, but generally some what higher values in women without clinical importance. A sex related modification of the EOT for the evidence of hypoxemia is not necessary.

[Influence of static muscle tension on acoustically evoked brain potentials, changes in skin resistance and bioelectric muscle activity].

Auditory evoked brain potentials (AEP), galvanic skin responses (GSR) and auditory evoked bioelectrical muscular responses were recorded in 16 male human subjects during voluntary isometric contraction of m. triceps brachii dexter. The electromygraphically controlled strength of muscular innervation corresponded to 20, 30, 40 and 50% of the maximal voluntary contraction. The trials were organized according to a change-over design. The following results could be obtained: The stepwise increase of the strength of muscular innervation effected an increase of the mean amplitude of auditory evoked EMG responses. The N1-P2 amplitudes of the AEP decreased with increasing strength of muscular innervation. The mean amplitude of the auditory evoked galvanic skin response was not changed significantly by the strength of muscular innervation, however, the spontaneous changes in galvanic skin resistance increased monotonously. Habituation effects were evident regarding amplitudes of AEP and GSR. The results indicate that muscular activity affects sensory information processing.

[Reproducibility of blood-flow measurement in the human forehead skin using thermodynamic probes].

The reproducibility (test-retest-reliability) of the forehead skin blood flow (method: fluvography or heat clearance) was tested by means of determination of the intraclass correlation coefficient. Defined changes of skin blood flow may be caused by loading a heat flow probe with weights; this was done in the range from 20 p to 500 p both in an ascending and a descending manner. A good reproducibility of results was reached in all repeated measurements made at intervals of one or several days. The correlation coefficient increases with increasing loads (r = 0.471 at a loading of 20 p; r = 0.813 at a load of 500 p).

[Effect of experimentally induced changes in blood flow on the heat and electrical conductivity of the skin].

This paper reports on the influence of experimentally induced changes in blood flow in upper extremities on both electrical resistance (1100 Hz; 30 kHz) and heat conductivity of the skin in 19 healthy adults. Exsanguination (ESMARCH bandage) caused a small decrease in resistance with recovery of the blood flow. Both changed of skin resistance and resting values of skin resistance have shown sex-related differences. The changes of heat conductivity are higher as compared to values of skin resistance. The results are discussed and compared with data from the literature.

Gastric wall dissection as a complication of percutaneous gastrostomy.

A percutaneous gastrostomy (PG) was complicated by gastric wall dissection and partial tube malposition. It occurred after tangential puncture along the greater curvature of the stomach which was performed in order to avoid an enlarged left lobe of the liver. To prevent this complication we recommend not using hydrophilic guidewires during PG.
