The mechanical atrioventricular time of isolated hearts as a correlate of the atrioventricular conduction time.

The time difference between onset of contraction in right atrium and left ventricle of isolated guinea pig hearts (mechanical AV time) was measured continuously by an impulse-triggered interval counter and taken as an equivalent of the electrophysiological AV conduction time derived from the epicardial ECG. Excellent correlation between these two parameters was established over a broad range of experimentally modified conduction times. The method was used to analyze the influence of electrical pacing, epinephrine, Ca2+ ions, and adenosine both on the AV conduction and on functional parameters of the hearts and revealed advantages in comparison to separate tests of single parameters in different experimental arrangements.

[Studies on cryoprecipitates. 5. Proteinchemical studies].

The total proteins are enriched 2.41 fold by cryoprecipitation. The protein fractions, however, have the same distribution as in the original plasma. With the help of radial immunodiffusion method haptoglobins were measured to have enriched to 351%, IgG to 252%, IgA to 307%, and IgM to 268%. The simultaneous increase of functional properties was systematically observed by taking the complete ABO-isoagglutinin titre as an example. The titre increase moves within the range of 1 to 2 degrees.

[Studies on cryoprecipitates. 6. Osmolality and electrolyte conductivity].

By measuring the osmolality of plasma and the cryoprecipitate gained by it as well as by measurements of conductivity the previously reported observations about the enrichment of electrolytes in cryoprecipitates could be confirmed. The findings show that these preparations represent hyperosmolic solutions. This fact should by kept in mind when applying them.

[The effect of stabilizer composition on thrombocytes and thrombocyte function in stored whole blood. I. The thrombocyte count, thrombocyte aggregation and retraction during storage].

The behaviour of thrombocyte number and thrombocyte function aggregation and retraction in ACD, AcD-A and AcD-AG stabilized blood was examined in 18 apparently healthy test persons for a period of 9 days. On the one hand the addition of adenin or guanosin respectively increased the thrombocyte aggregation, on the other hand, however, a decrease of free, haemostatically efficient thrombocytes could be observed. Under the test conditions chosen retraction does not allow any statement to be made on the degree of the storage damage.

[The effect of stabilizer composition on the thrombocytes and thrombocyte function in stored whole blood. II. Results of the thrombocyte spreading test].

The behaviour of thrombocyte spreading in ACD, AcD-A and AcD-AG stabilized blood was examined in 18 apparently healthy test persons for a storage period of 9 days. Due to an improved energy metabolism of thrombocytes the addition of adenin or guanosin respectively in ACD stabilized blood will cause the thrombocyte spreading to be widely preserved during storage.

More on the determinants of the fertility transition.

The economic approach to fertility is an application of the economics theory of consumer behavior. It is assumed that consumers of children are utility-maximizers with stable preferences over time. Thus, changes in fertility are related to changes in household income and the "price" of children. One concern in this approach is that demographic changes are a product of changes in tastes rather than exogenous changes in economic factors such as the earning ability of women. In this paper, the effect of economic variables on the demand for children in the United States in 1950, 1960, 1970, and 1980 is examined. Support is provided for the hypothesis that the earning ability of women is an important determinant of fertility.

Unemployment and marital status in Great Britain.

During the past decade, the marriage rate has declined and the divorce rate has increased in Great Britain. Becker (1981) attributes such changes to improvements in the economic status of women, in that high-wage women gain less from marriage relative to other women. However, an empirical analysis of data from the General Household Survey 1985 in Great Britain shows that male unemployment is another important determinant of changes in marital status. High rates of male unemployment reduce the incidence of marriage and increase the likelihood of divorce.
