[Spontaneous headaches among secondary school students].

The aim of the work was to evaluate the prevalence of headache in secondary school students. The methods of the study were based on the inquiry investigations of the students of 5 schools recruited randomly from 44 secondary schools in Lódź, following informed consent given by the School Supervision Authorities of the Lódź province, head-masters of the schools, parents, and by the students themselves. Personal questionnaires contained a number of questions referring to headaches that met the criteria of IHS Classification of Headaches. The students were inquired about localization of pains, their radiation, duration, frequency, time of occurrence (day or night), year and age of first onset of pains, associated symptoms, behaviour during pains, circumstances under which pains come on, family history relating to headaches. Headache subjects were then passed on for verification procedures consisting of questioning and physical examination. The results obtained were statistically elaborated basing on the independence chi-square test and F-Fisher's exact test. We studied 2351 students (1500 females, 851 males) aged 15-19 years. Headache in the past year was found in 2059 subjects: migraine in 511 (426 females, 85 males), of which 302 had migraine attacks more than once a month, and 67 had migrainous state; tension-type headache (T-TH) in 1346 (847 females, 499 males), of which 414 had headache more than 12 days per year; chronic T-TH in 21; mixed headache in 148 (113 females, 35 males). Mixed headache frequency was determined on the basis of migraine attacks. A total of 125 students reported more than 12 attacks. Sixteen subjects had migrainous state. Idiopathic stabbing headache occurred in 54 students (19 females, 35 males) of which 12 suffered from more than 12 attacks per year.

[Psychological aspects of tension type headache].

In understanding and treatment of tension type headache the psychological stress is considered as one of the most important factors causing and strengthening headache. The aim of this work was the assessment of personality traits in patients suffering from tension-type headache. Methods of this study were based on investigation of the dimensions of personality using the Eysenck Personality Inventory EPQ-R and the assessment of psychological stress using a Questionnaire of Demographic Variables. The group of 120 patients suffering from tension-type headache was assessed and 30 control subjects without headaches were investigated. Special personality traits conditioning/characterising tension-type headache were not confirmed. Patients with tension-type headache comparing to subjects from the control group showed neurotism and introversion.

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease with tubulovesicular structures: an ultrastructural study.

Tubulovesicular structures (TVS) have been consistently observed in brain tissue of the transmissible spongiform virus encephalopathies such as natural and experimental scrapie, bovine spongiform encephalopathy and experimentally induced Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). TVS were recently demonstrated in 3 cases of naturally occurring CJD. We report here the presence of TVS in another human brain with CJD, as detected in all 3 specimens by thin section electron microscopy. Their occurrence in all types of spongiform encephalopathies, irrespective of the affected host and the strain of infectious agent, emphasizes their biological significance.

[Functional condition of the spine in female workers in the cotton-processing industry evaluated on the basis of subjective and radiological studies].

Studies involved 179 weaving and 173 spinning women. All of them underwent functional tests of the spine supported by X-ray tests. In approximately 45% of weavers and 29% of spinners functional disturbances in the lower segment of the spine were found. The incidence of the motorial disturbances of the spine was found to increase with age. The analysis of the impact of employment length upon the rate of motorial disturbances demonstrated that the disturbances occurred within the first years of work and reached the highest level after 10 years.

[Role of exercise therapy in the prevention of lumbosacral backache in textile industry workers].

Direct and remote effects of therapeutic exercises on the low-back pain syndrome in cotton-industry workers have been estimated. The treatment was applied to fifty-five patients aged from 30 to 58 (mean age--45) with chronic pain-syndrome, who were submitted to a series of exercises and everyday gymnastics. In the course of treatment the following results were obtained: retreatment of low-back pains, increasing of spines mobility (activity), increasing of abdomen-muscle strength. One-year follow-up demonstrated sickness absenteeism decrease by 66%, as compared to a period of the same duration prior to treatment.

[Usefulness of questionnaires in detection of early symptoms of sciatica and related pain syndromes of the lumbosacral region and determination of their incidence among workers of textile industry].

The study was aimed at the determination of sciatica case rate among cotton industry workers based on inquiry. Two questionnaires for detecting complaints typical of sciatica were developed. 2463 weavers and 3083 spinners were examined. A comparative group involved 978 shop attendants and 593 office workers. It was found out that pains characteristic of sciatica were experienced by 45% weavers, 43% shop attendants, 29.2% spinners, and 16% office workers. Results of physical examinations in randomly selected cases corresponded in 97% with the questionnaire data. In most cases pains resulted from overloading of the lower section of the vertebral column.
