The prevalence of caries in 108 mentally and physically handicapped children between the ages of 6 and 16 was determined in a clinical study. The prevalence of caries in residual teeth was extremely high, 100% higher than in the healthy control group. Caries-free dentition was not observed. The oral hygiene was totally inadequate in 94% of the children examined. The state of dental care for these patients was unsatisfactory. It was shown that directed prophylaxis is a necessity with handicapped children.

The fluoride concentrations in the superficial enamel of deciduous teeth of children from areas with fluoridized drinking water (Basel, up to 1.00 ppm F-) and from a fluoride-deficient area (Hamburg, approx. 0.14 ppm F-) were measured and compared. The results of this investigation show that, if optimal accounts of fluoride are available, the fluoride content in the enamel of deciduous teeth is twice as high as that in teeth of children from areas without fluoridation. The relationship between the reduction of caries due to fluoridized drinking water and the significant increase in fluoride concentration in the enamel was demonstrated.
A new method for in vitro fluoridisation of dental enamel is presented where commercial fluoride tablets of available fluoride compounds are subjected to comparative tests (Sodium fluoride, magnesium fluoride, or trisodiumhexafluoroferrate). Special consideration was given to stability of fluoride concentration on the enamel surface. Considerable differences were observed in the level of fluoride content directly after the last administration of fluoride and also the amount of fluoride concentration in 24 hours. The highest initial fluoride concentration was achieved with NaF (pH 4.0) and Na3FeF6 in combination with NaF, CaF2 and MgF2 (pH 4.0) whereas the greatest stability was reached with NaF.
Thirty-three patients with the tentative diagnosis of a myofacial pain syndrome were treated symptomatically and causally after standardized diagnostic exmaination. Eleven months after the termination of therapy, twelve patients were without symptoms, seventeen showed improvements and the clinical picture of four patients had not changed at all. When supporting the therapeutic success by prosthetic measures the choice of the articulator system (Dentatus, Condylator) was irrelevant.
