Morphological and hormonal features of an ovine and a caprine intersex.

A caprine and an ovine intersex were examined to compare their morphological and hormonal features in light of their cytogenetic make-up. Both animals, registered as females at birth, developed male-like appearance and behaviour as they approached the age of sexual maturity. Plasma testosterone concentrations in the intersexes were similar to those in adult males of the respective species. Cytogenetic analyses showed male and female cells in the blood while cultures of solid tissue contained only female cells suggesting that both were blood chimeras similar to the bovine freemartins.

Steroid levels after intramuscular injection of testosterone propionate in the caprine.

Nine sexually mature intact grade does were injected intramuscularly with testosterone propionate and subsequent plasma steroid concentrations determined and male-like behavior recorded. The does received either 100 mg testosterone propionate every three days for six treatments, total dose 600 mg (N = 5); 50 mg testosterone propionate daily for eighteen days, total dose 900 mg (N = 2) or 10 mg testosterone propionate daily for eighteen days, total dose 180 mg (N = 2). The treatments induced male-like sex behavior, the intensity of which was related to the dose of exogenous testosterone used, the regimen of administration, and the plasma levels of testosterone. Exogenous testosterone treatment had minimal effect on the subsequent reproductive activity of the does.

Reproductive performance in sows treated with estradiol benzoate/human chorionic gonadotrophin combination at weaning.

The effects of estradiol benzoate plus human chorionic gonadotrophin administered on the day of weaning on the reproductive performance in sows was studied. The treatment advanced the onset of estrus but the duration of estrus was slightly prolonged. Breeding on the post-weaning estrus was associated with poor pregnancy rate and smaller litters. The treatment did not cause permanent damage to the reproductive tract as the reproductive performance of the treated sows after subsequent breedings were unaffected. The possible causes of the poor fertility in the estradiol benzoate plus human chorionic gonadotrophin treated sows are discussed.

Ovarian disorders: clinical and morphological observations in 30 mares.

A five year prospective study of equine ovarian problems requiring surgical correction was undertaken at the Ontario Veterinary College. Thirty mares were studied, of which 14 had granulosa cell tumors, six were with anovulatory persistent follicular "structures", five had ovarian hemotoma, two presented ovarian hypoplasia and one each of ovarian dysgerminoma, teratoma and abscessation. The clinical signs manifested by the affected animals were varied. The affected ovaries were removed via flank or midline laparotomy or through colpotomy. Their morphology was studied and representative portions of affected ovaries submitted for laboratory diagnosis. Postsurgical recovery and resumption of reproductive activity were satisfactory.

Pregnancy and peripheral plasma progesterone levels in cows inseminated after synchronization of estrus with prostaglandin F2 alpha.

Fifteen Holstein cows were treated with two doses of 25 mg of a prostaglandin F(2)alpha (PGF(2)alpha as dinoprost tromethamine) administered intramuscularly 11 days apart. The cows were then divided into three groups and inseminated either at 72, 80 or 72 and 96 hours after the second dose of PGF(2)alpha. Thirteen cows ovulated after the second prostaglandin treatment. Eight cows were diagnosed pregnant by rectal palpation 42 days after insemination but only five calved. PGF(2)alpha induced luteolysis in cows with active corpora lutea as evidenced by the dramatic decreases in the plasma progesterone concentrations after treatment. In contrast, following PGF(2)alpha administration to cows in follicular or late luteal phase the concentrations of plasma progesterone either increased gradually or remained low for several days before increasing to maximal levels. The ovulatory rate after the two doses of PGF(2)alpha11 days apart was high. However, the pregnancy rate after this treatment was influenced by other factors including abnormal ovarian function.

The genital Mycoplasma and Ureaplasma flora of healthy and diseased dogs.

The genital mycoplasma and ureaplasma flora was compared in 136 dogs with varied reproductive histories. Mycoplasmas were recovered from 88% of vulvovaginal swabs, 85% preputial swabs and 72% semen samples. Isolation rates were slightly higher from dogs that were infertile or had evidence of genital disease but the differences from those that were fertile or clinically normal were statistically significant only in the male. Ureaplasmas were recovered from half the females sampled. Higher, but not statistically significant isolation rates (75%) were made from infertile females with purulent vulvar discharge versus those that were clinically normal and fertile (40%). In the male dog there was a significantly higher incidence of ureaplasmas in the prepuce of infertile animals (69%) than those that were fertile (0%) (p less than or equal to 0.05). Semen isolations although not significantly higher in infertile males, were all made from ejaculates, with subnormal motility, low sperm counts and/or a high percentage of midpiece and tail abnormalities (bent or tightly coiled).

A serological survey of dogs for Brucella canis in southwestern Ontario.

Sera from 2 000 dogs from southwestern Ontario were tested for antibodies to Brucella canis by a rapid slide agglutination test. The 100 positively reacting sera were tested by tube agglutination and immunoprecipitation (gel diffusion) tests. Thirty-one of these sera gave suspicious titres and one a positive titre in the tube agglutination test. Six of the rapid slide test positive sera gave positive reactions in immunoprecipitation tests. One dog was identified which was found to have a history very suggestive of B. canis infection. It was judged that 0.3% of sera tested showed serological evidence of B. canis infection. The complexities of the serological diagnosis of B. canis infection was apparent, in particular the tendency to false-positive results in the rapid slide agglutination test.

Peripheral plasma levels of progesterone in pregnant goats and in pregnant goats treated with prostaglandin F2a.

Prostaglandin or prostaglandin analogues have been shown to be luteolytic in the pregnant goat. In this study the temporal changes in the plasma concentrations of progesterone during pregnancy and after administration of PGF2a to pregnant goats are described. PGF2a administration to pregnant goats at 30 and 65 days after breeding induced abortion within 34 to 75 hours. These abortions were accompanied by estrus and profuse muco-hemorrhagic discharges. When PGF2a was administered to pregnant goats 140 or 142 days after breeding, premature parturition occurred within 42 to 76 hours. Live kids were delivered in all cases. The plasma levels of progesterone in all pregnant goats showed dramatic decreases within 24 hours after the prostaglandin injections and continued to decrease gradually until abortions or premature parturition. Thereafter, the progesterone levels remained low for several days.

Clinical, pathologic and cytogenetic observations on two intersex dogs.

Two "bitches" presented with histories of non-attainment of puberty were diagnosed as intersexes. Data on gross morphology, histology of the genitalia, and genetic sex using blood, skin and gonads were employed for the classification of the type of intersex in each case. Both cases were classified as true hermaphrodites.

Implantation and maintenance of pregnancy in mated rhesus monkeys following bilateral oophorectomy or luteectomy with and without progesterone replacement.

Six mated rhesus monkeys were bilaterally oophorectomized between the fourth and sixth day after ovulation, and received silastic implants containing crystalline progesterone subcutaneously. Five mated monkeys were subjected to luteectomy 5 or 6 days after ovulation. Three of these received progesterone implants subcutaneously. Pregnancy occurred in one oophorectomised monkey and in all three luteectomised monkeys treated with progesterone. It was evident from the steroid patterns observed in the pregnant monkeys that the ovarian tissue other than the corpus luteum contributes to part of the oestrogen seen around the time of implantation. The corpus luteum apears to be the main source of progesterone in the peripheral plasma during this period. Placental progesterone production in early pregnant rhesus monkeys starts at three weeks after ovulation and the placental production of progesterone precedes that of oestrogen.
