Stamping of monomeric SAMs as a route to structured crystallization templates: patterned titania films.

Gold-coated glass slides have be patterned by using self-assembled monolayers (SAM) of alkane thiols. Through the use of a special thiol terminated with a styrene monomer, microstructures of 5 to 10 microm width and 70 A height have been formed on the surface by graft polymerization of styrene. These patterned gold slides have then been used to template the precipitation of thin titania films from ethanolic solutions of titanium isopropoxide to create microstructured architectures in the film. Plasmon resonance spectra have established the presence of different steps in the process and have been used to follow the kinetics of the precipitation of titania on the surface. The structured TiO2 films have been characterized by scanning electron microscopy.

Inorganic Nanotubes.

The miniaturization of electronic components has initiated a technical revolution during the past decades. For further miniaturization down to the molecular or atomic range the synthesis of building elements on a nanometer scale is necessary. This article gives an overview of inorganic nanotubes with diameters within the range of 10-100 Å, whose characteristic properties can be varied from metallic to high-temperature resistant or redox active, depending upon the raw material and the synthesis procedure.

The Valence States of Nickel, Tin, and Sulfur in the Ternary Chalcogenide Ni(3)Sn(2)S(2)-XPS, (61)Ni and (119)Sn Mössbauer Investigations, and Band Structure Calculations.

The hitherto controversial valence states of nickel and tin in the ternary chalcogenide Ni(3)Sn(2)S(2) (see structure) have been determined by photoelectron and Mössbauer spectroscopy ((61)Ni, (119)Sn). Results from band structure calculations confirmed that this shandite phase is a metal and that the approximate distribution of the valence electrons is (Ni(0))(3)(Sn(1)(II))(Sn(2)(II))(S(II-))(2).
