[Various hygienic problems in ambulatory dental surgery].

Oral surgical interventions on an outpatient basis are attended by considerable hygienic hazards. The main reasons of this, which are in part subjective and in part objective, are presented. Some typical examples show that at least minimal hygienic requirements may be met by the physician and by the patient also under apparently unfavourable conditions. An optimal solution must be aimed at, but this requires certain prerequisites as to equipment and premises. In any case, it must be called for in planning and establishing greater stomatological services that sould be preferred for this reason to single practices also from the viewpoint of hygiene. Consequently, the propagation of hospitalism and infections caused by pathogenic organisms may be controlled by strict hygienic measures also in our specialty.

[Use of anorganic rhodanides in the breeding of piglets].

Breeding results of sows reared under conventional conditions could be raised by treating them with 20 mg potassium rhodanide/day 14 days before up to 14 days after farrowig. An increase of the rhodanide level could be demonstrated in the colostrum providing a higher rhodanide supply in piglets of treated sows.

[Membrane effect of potassium rhodanide and methotrexate].

In HeLa cells and macrophages rhodanide ions cause biological hyperpolarization of the cell membranes, while methotrexate hyperpolarizes the membranes as an antimetabolite. Cell physiologically, rhodanide has a general stimulating effect within the physiological control range of the cell. This membrane effect could be related to the physiological and therapeutic action of rhodanide in processes involving immunological events.

[Sodium thiocyanate as a protective agent in intensive calf fattening. Brief report].

Daily administration of sodium thiocyanate at 750 mg a calf for the first three weeks in the fattening stalls reduced the occurrence of illness by 60%. This protective effect seemed to persist during the following weeks without additional treatment. Addition of the thiocyanate to the food may be beneficial through a nutritive effect.

[Relationships between chemical constitution and germicidial effect. 28. Preparation, antimicrobial and anthelminthic effect of diiosothiocyanates].

In comparison with monoisothiocyanates, diisothiocyanates were either less active or of the same activity against bacteria and fungi. None of the compounds tested possessed antimicrobial activity worth investigating further. However, compound No. 2 (2,4-diisothiocyanatomethyl ethoxybenzol) and compound No. 5 (1,3-dimethyl-4,6-diisothiocyanatomethylbenzol) were more active as anthelmintics against Enchytraeus than the p-phenylene diisothiocyanates.
