Influence of aging on the protein profile of myelin isolated from human brain white matter.

Myelin proteins composition was examined in material of 20 autoptic cases at ages from 20 to 97 years. The technique of polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and isotachophoresis was applied. In polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis a progressive increase starting at the age of 60 years of Wolfgram protein at the expense of Folch-Lees proteolipid protein and DM-20 protein was observed. The myelin-associated protein started to increase in the 4th and 5th decade of life, returning thereafter to values observed in younger cases. The isotachophoretic technique did not differentiate the changes observed in myelin protein in the course of aging.

Morphological and biochemical changes in peripheral nerves with aging.

The ulnar nerve taken at autopsy from 30 subjects aged 24-98 who died without features of clinical involvement of peripheral nerves was examined morphologically. Density of myelinated fibers (m.f) per 0.1 mm2, frequency distribution of the external diameter of m.f., and teased fiber were estimated. Besides, in 8 nerves some lipids were assessed biochemically. The study showed that the percentage of fibers with morphological changes increases with aging (7-10% in adults and even up to 35% in aged subjects). In older subjects loss of m.f. may be marked. Morphological changes in the nerves of subjects in all groups of age are unspecific (axonal degeneration, and segmental demyelination). Striking feature for the nerve is the preserved ability to repair damage of the fiber independently of the subjects' age. Accidental factors play some role as a cause of morphological changes in the nerve in all groups of age but in the elderly, aging of the neuron seems to be an important factor. Biochemical changes in the nerves with age are not prominent, and much less expressed than morphological changes.

[Nutritional value of daily diets prepared in several regions of the country. Part V. Value of group b vitamins].

Studies of the content of group B vitamins: thiamin, riboflavin, niacin and vitamin b6 in daily diets of manual and mental workers with medium income were carried on. The diets were prepared for five regions of the country (Warszawa, Lublin, Olsztyn, Poznań, Wrocław) under laboratory conditions. These diets contained respectively: thiamin 1.17 and 1.11 mg, riboflavin 1.48 and 1.55 mg; niacin 11.3 and 10.2 mg and vitamin B6 1.50 and 1.21 mg per day. According to the studies the realization of daily requirements by these diets for thiamin were met 82 and 98%, for niacin 62 and 65%, and for vitamin B6 79 and 64%. The comparison of the presently studied diets with the ones from 1973, 1980 and 1981 showed that the content of niacin and vitamin B6 intakes systematically decrease. There were no considerable differences in the contents of group B vitamins between diets prepared in all five regions of Poland.

[Malate dehydrogenase and its isoenzymes in the peripheral blood leukocytes in progressive muscular dystrophy of the Duchenne type].

The authors studied the composition of isoenzymes of malic dehydrogenase in peripheral blood leucocytes of patients with Duchenne-type progressive muscular dystrophy, their mothers and sisters, and also in other primary muscular diseases. The studied group included 25 patients with Duchenne dystrophy, 20 their mothers and sisters, and 11 patients with other primary muscular diseases. The control group comprised 10 healthy subjects aged 19-40 years. Sporadically a decrease was observed of total activity and of the amount of the mitochondrial isoenzyme of MDH in Duchenne dystrophy. In one case the m-MDH isoenzyme was completely absent, this patient had most advanced disease. In the mothers of patients decreased MDH activity occurred rarely (once in 13 mothers) and the pattern of MDH isoenzymes was normal, similarly as in sisters of these patients. In other primary muscular diseases no abnormalities were found.
