Ganglia of the cervical part of the sympathetic trunk in the white rat. Sources of blood supply and angioarchitectonics.

Each ganglion of the cervical part of the sympathetic trunk in white rat is supplied by several arteries of diameter of 15--30 micrometers. The arteries arise from three sources: 1) large vessels adjacent to the ganglia, 2) vascular net of connective and muscular tissues surrounding the ganglion, 3) vessels of nerves and interganglionic rami. The vascular network of the cervical sympathetic ganglia was connected with the vascular plexus of the vagus nerve and cervical as well as brachial plexuses.

Animals

Sources and variations of the arteries supplying the cervical part of the spinal cord in white rat.

Investigations were performed in 36 rats of Wistar strain. In 50% of cases the accessory arteries originating from the vertebral artery and connections of the ventral spinal artery with the first radicular arteries were found. The dorsal spinal arteries always originated from the intracranial part of the vertebral artery, and in many instances their discontinuity at the level of C4--C6 was observed. Besides the spinal arteries the cervical part of the spinal cord is supplied by radicular arteries which are more frequent in rats than in human.

Animals

Sources of blood supply and angioarchitecture of nerves in limbs of the white rat.

Sources of blood supply and structure of vascular network were described in nerves of forelimbs and hindlimbs of 30 Wistar strain rats. The vessels were injected through the left ventricle of the heart with aqueous solution of gelatin, stained with black ink. Following fixation in formaldehyde samples were taken at various points of the median, ulnar, radial, musculocutaneous, femoral, nerves and their terminal branches. The preparations were made translucent in methyl benzoate. The observations point to constant sources of regional vessels supplying nerves of forelimbs and hindlimbs and to a similar angioarchitecture of studied nerve trunks at their entire length. Branches of regional vessels which enter the nerves form a fine mesh network in epineurium. Within nerve fascicles capillary network forms a uniform cord of vessels, the structure of which resembles that of human sciatic nerve.

Animals

Studies on density of capillary network in the course of nerves in the white rat.

Density of capillary network was examined in the course of nerves of frontal and rear extremities in the white rat, in various portions of the nerves. At the same levels, number of nervous fibers per mm2 of the area was scored as well as diameters of myelinated fibers was recorded in proximal and distal fragments of chosen nerves. Decreased density of capillary network was detected in peripheral portions of the nerves, which was paralleled by an increase in number of myelinated fibers and a decrease in their diameter.

Inhibition of intercellular communication in Chinese hamster V79 cells by fractionated asphalt fume condensates.

Asphalt fume condensate is a skin carcinogen in mice, yet this complex mixture contains relatively low levels of known carcinogenic initiators. Consequently, its biological activity has been attributed to the presence of cocarcinogenic or tumor-promoting agents. One of several proposed mechanisms of tumor promotion is inhibition of intercellular communication. In an attempt to determine if asphalt fume has tumor-promoting potential inhibition of intercellular communication was measured in V79 cells exposed to fractionated asphalt fume condensate. Fume from air-blown Arabian crude asphalt was trapped and separated into five fractions by preparative-scale high-pressure liquid chromatography. The parent fume condensate and the five fractions inhibited intercellular communication in a concentration-dependent fashion, with a minimum effective concentration of 2.5 microgram/ml for the most potent fraction. Cytotoxicity assays were performed at the same time and concentrations as the metabolic cooperation assays. Cytotoxic responses paralleled the inhibition of intercellular communication.

[Epidemiologic and clinical studies of patients with tick-borne encephalitis from northeastern Poland].

The authors discussed the epidemiological and serological evaluation as well as the clinical symptomatology of thick-borne encephalitis in 215 patients from North-East Poland. They found, among other things, that in 94 per cent of cases the infection was percutaneous from the tick bite and caused via the digestive route in 6 per cent of cases by drinking unboiled cow milk. It was demonstrated that during the late phase of convalescence i.e. one to five years after the outbreak of the disease, the injuries to the nervous system were more frequently manifest than in patients during the acute phase. The authors pointed out that 25.3 per cent of those who recovered from tick-borne encephalitis, suffered to a varying degree from a limited physical and psychic efficiency. This condition originated from the existing injuries to the nervous system and led not infrequently to a permanent disability of the persons concerned.

[Chronic toxoplasmosis in pregnant women--an epidemiological and social problem].

Frequency of pregnancy miscarriage was analized in 52 women with chronic toxoplasmosis treated clinically. The pregnancy miscarriage was found in 78.4% of cases including abortion-48.7%, premature and immature delivery resulting in death-17.1% and newborns with congenital defects-12.6%, of with 78.6% died shortly after the delivery. The percentage of normal pregnancy amounted to 21.6% and in 3 cases newborns with congenital defects survived. It was shown that chronic toxoplasmosis is dangerous for successive pregnancies and it is not restricted to one pregnancy only.

Specificity of the FTA-ABS and TPHA tests during pregnancy.

In order to determine whether pregnancy influences the specificity of the fluorescent treponemal antibody absorption (FTA-ABS) and Treponema palidum haemagglutination assay (TPHA) tests, these tests, together with the quantitative fluorescent treponemal antibody (FTA) and Venereal Disease Research Laboratory (VDRL) tests, were carried out simultaneously on 2000 pregnant women who attended for compulsory prenatal screening. In only one patient (0.05% of the total investigated) was a positive result to the TPHA test obtained, the specificity of which it was impossibile to confirm. The FTA-ABS test gave a weakly reactive result of the borderline type but this was found to be non-specific in only four (0.2%) patients. The results of our investigations showed that the specificity of the FTA-ABS and the TPHA tests performed on pregnant women did not differ from the specificity of these tests when carried out on other population groups.
