Knowledge-based and data-driven models in arrhythmia fuzzy classification.

OBJECTIVES: Fuzzy rules automatically derived from a set of training examples quite often produce better classification results than fuzzy rules translated from medical knowledge. This study aims to investigate the difference in domain representation between a knowledge-based and a data-driven fuzzy system applied to an electrocardiography classification problem. METHODS: For a three-class electrocardiographic arrhythmia classification task a set of fifteen fuzzy rules is derived from medical expertise on the basis of twelve electrocardiographic measures. A second set of fuzzy rules is automatically constructed on thirty-nine MIT-BIH database's records. The performances of the two classifiers on thirteen different records are comparable and up to a certain extent complementary. The two fuzzy models are then analyzed, by using the concept of information gain to estimate the impact of each ECG measure on each fuzzy decision process. RESULTS: Both systems rely on the beat prematurity degree and the QRS complex width and neglect the P wave existence and the ST segment features. The PR interval is not well characterized across the fuzzy medical rules while it plays an important role in the data-driven fuzzy system. The T wave area shows a higher information gain in the knowledge based decision process, and is not very much exploited by the data-driven system. CONCLUSIONS: The main difference between a human designed and a data driven ECG arrhythmia classifier is found about the PR interval and the T wave.

[Dynamic observation and clinical significance of integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine on interleukin-2 system, T cell and erythrocyte immune system in patients of lung cancer].

OBJECTIVE: To study the dynamic changes and its clinical significance of integrated traditional Chinese and western medicine (TCM-WM) on IL-2 system, T cell and erythrocyte immune system in patients of lung cancer. METHODS: Forty-eight cases with lung cancer were randomly divided into two groups: TCM-WM group (group I) and the chemotherapy group (group II); and 20 healthy subjects were simultaneously compared. The relevant immune indices, clinical symptoms and signs, changes of solid tumor and living quality were dynamically observed. RESULTS: (1) The serum IL-2 level of lung cancer patients were significantly lower, while sIL-2R level higher than that of the healthy subjects. And they were raised and lowered respectively after treatment, especially in the group I, but different from the control group yet. And there were highly negative correlation between IL-2 and sIL-2R levels. (2) The percentage of CD3, CD4 and the ratio CD4/CD8 were decreased markedly in both groups, except CD8 which was increased markedly. And the percentage of RBC-C3b RR was obviously lower, while that of RBC-ICR was obviously higher. But the above-mentioned indices could be improved after treatment, especially in the group I, and there were highly positive correlation between CD4/CD8 ratio and RBC-C3bRR. (3) After treatment, all above-mentioned indices were changed significantly to their corresponding opposites. However, in regard to the degree of improvement, the patients of group I were in a better position than those of group II. At the same time, improvement of their clinical symptoms and signs, change of solid tumor and living quality also showed advantageous. CONCLUSION: The therapeutic superiority of TCM-WM on lung cancer may be related with the modulation on immune function. Thus we can say that the effect of TCM-WM is better than that of chemotherapy alone.

[The design of a novel multifunction ECG board].

In this paper an ECG amplifying circuit is comprehensively presented. This circuit has all the necessary functions which include isolated ground, programmable ECG lead and filter band, programmed gain, rapid baseline restoring, anti defibrillating electrical shock, anti interference of high frequency electrotome etc.

[Development of the IMP900 ECG & VT patient monitoring system].

A new respiration monitor was developed with this paper, which can monitor tidal volume continuously based on the impedance technique as well ad ECG at the same time. Advanced digital storage display technique and modular hardware design are adopted in this system. One by one calibration method was introduced to solve problem of individual differences in the measurement of tidal volume, which make it viable to monitor Tidal volume with impedance technique. The system possesses characteristic of high ratio of performance to cost. Clinical tests of the system have been made for nonsurgical patients, the results show that the system meets the basic clinical requirements, and its wide clinical applications are expected in the future.

Highly insect-resistant transgenic tobacco plants containing both B.t. and CpTI genes.

The cowpea trypsin inhibitor (CpTI) gene was synthesized according to its cDNA sequence using DNA synthesizer and confirmed by DNA sequencing. The CpTI gene and modified Bacillus thuringiensis (B.t.) delta-endotoxin gene were cotransformed to tobacco explants mediated by Agrobacterium tumefaciens. The integrations of B.t and CpTI genes were confirmed by PCR and Southern hybridization. Three kinds of transgenic plants were obtained: (1) containing CpTI gene, (2) containing B.t gene, (3) containing both CpTI and B.t genes. Bioassays showed that all these transgenic plants were toxic to the larvae of Heliothis armigera and that the tobacco plants containing both genes had enhanced toxicity to larvae by comparison with plants containing only CpTI or B.t gene.
