Non-planarity in blood vessels is known to influence arterial flows and wall shear stress. To gain insight, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has been used to investigate effects of curvature and out-of-plane geometry on the distribution of fluid flows and wall shear stresses in a hypothetical non-planar bifurcation. Three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations for a steady state Newtonian fluid were solved numerically using a finite element method. Non-planarity in one of the two daughter vessels is found to deflect flow from the inner wall of the vessel to the outer wall and to cause changes in the distribution of wall shear stresses. Results from this study agree to experimental observations and CFD simulations in the literature, and support the view that non-planarity in blood vessels is a factor with important haemodynamic significance and may play a key role in vascular biology and pathophysiology.
OBJECTIVE: To discuss the value of hysteroscopy and fractional dilatation and curettage (D&C) in endometrial carcinoma diagnosis. METHODS: Assort 156 endometrium carcinoma patients of our hospital to two groups, examined by D&C (group A, 93 patients) or hysteroscopy (group B, 63 patients). Compared the diagnosis's veracity of the two methods. RESULTS: In group A 34% (31/92) of patients' clinical stage was earlier than their surgical stage, 15% (14/92) of patients' clinical stage was later than their surgical stage, 75% (68/91) of involvement of cervical canal was estimated precisely, while the positive peritoneal cytology rate was 32% (23/71). In group B the rates were 43% (27/63), 3% (2/63), 90% (56/62) and 35% (18/51), respectively. There is no statistic difference between the two groups of the positive peritoneal cytology rate and the earlier clinical stage than surgical stage (P > 0.05), but there is statistic difference between the two groups in estimating the involvement of cervical canal and the earlier surgical stage than clinical stage (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The hysteroscopy can discover the involvement of cervical mucosa more accurately in the endometrial carcinoma patients, but not improve the positive peritoneal cytology rate.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the blood lead level of 3 - 5 year old children living in the cities in China and to provide scientific data for making policy on environmental lead pollution for children health protection. METHODS: Six thousand five hundred and two vein blood samples from 3 - 5 year old children in nineteen cities of nine provinces were sampled. Inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) were employed to determine lead level in whole blood after microwave digestion for sample preparation and questionnaire survey was also performed. Data were analyzed with multiple regression on factors which affecting blood lead levels. RESULTS: Results showed that mean blood lead level was 88.3 micro g/L for 3 - 5 year old children living in the cities in China and mean blood lead level of boys (91.1 micro g/L) was higher than that of girls (87.3 micro g/L). Twenty-nine point nine one per cent of the children's blood lead level exceeded 100 micro g/L. The research finding showed: (1) higher blood lead levels had negative effects on children's physical growth, language ability etc. (2) behavior of parents had certain effects on children's blood lead levels. (3) blood lead levels of children were affected by unhealthy habits. CONCLUSIONS: Problem of childhood lead poisoning in China has become more serious. During the past ten years, blood lead levels of children has been increased in China while decreasing in developed countries. Blood lead levels of children in China are higher than that of developed countries, which called for special concern by government and society.
OBJECTIVE: To explore the therapeutic effects of partial liquid ventilation on canine inhalation injury. METHODS: Mongrel dogs were inflicted with steam inhalation injury and were employed as the model. Partial liquid ventilation was accomplished by slow instillation of into the lungs. The changes in blood superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA), nitric oxide (NO) and arterial oxygen pressure (PaO(2)) were determined. RESULTS: The blood levels of MDA and NO at 2 postburn hours (PBHs) increased obviously but those of SOD and PaO(2) decreased significantly when compared with those before injury (P < 0.05). The blood levels of SOD, MDA, NO and PaO(2) recovered to near preinjury levels after partial liquid ventilation. CONCLUSION: Partial liquid ventilation might be helpful in the management of inhalation injury by raising blood oxygen pressure, antagonizing lipid peroxidation and reducing the in vivo NO production.
OBJECTIVE: To establish a simple, rapid and sensitive hybridization method for detecting drug-resistance relevant gene mutation in Mycobacterium tuberculosis. METHODS: Fourteen single-strand specific probes designed to detect mutated and/or wild rpoB gene in Mycobacterium tuberculosis were spotted and fixed on nylon membranes, and PCR products labeled with biotin were obtained by using down-stream primer labeled with biotin, then hybridized and analyzed with streptavidin-HRP and TMB. RESULTS: Twenty-three rifampin-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates and 11 rifampin-sensitive isolates were analyzed. The gene mutations were consistent with the DNA sequencing and the in vitro susceptibility test in 30/34 and 28/34 of the isolates, respectively. Mutations of Ser-531 were present in 11 of the 23 rifampin-resistant isolates, followed by His-526, Leu-533, and no mutation was found in 13 isolates, including 2 rifampin-resistant isolates. Mutations in loci 516 and 513 were not detected. CONCLUSION: Reverse dot-blot hybridization may be of potential use for the rapid diagnosis of rifampin-resistant tuberculosis.
OBJECTIVE: To explore the preventive effect of lanthanum chloride on enteral bacterial translocation in scalded rats. METHODS: Ninety Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were employed in the study and randomly divided into three groups, i.e. normal control (A), burn control (B) and treatment (C) groups. Plasmid PUC19 labelled by JM109 was transfected to Escherichia coli (E. coli), so that restriction endonuclease finger - print image spectrum analysis could be applied to the tracing and quantification of the translocation of E. coli from intestine to mesenteric lymph nodes (MLNs) and blood. The intestinal tissue contents of endotoxin (ET), nitric oxide (NO), nitric oxide synthase (NOS), malondialdehyde (MDA) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were determined. RESULTS: It was identified that the bacteria in MLNs and blood exhibited the same gene map with those from gastric gavage in B and C groups. But the bacterial quantity in MLNs in C group on 3 postburn day (PBD) was much lower than that in B group (P < 0.05). The intestinal MDA content in C group on 1 and 3 PBDs was obviously higher than that in B group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Bacteria (E. coli) could be translocated from gut to MLNs and blood, which could be evidently alleviated by lanthanum chloride by means of its bactericidal property, inhibition of NOS activity, so that NO production decreased, and its ability to increase SOD activity leading to less production of MDA.
OBJECTIVE: To observe the serological features of hepatitis G virus (HGV or GBV) in selected population of Shaanxi, Qinghai and Xinjiang Provinces (region). METHODS: Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to determine IgG antibody against GBV (anti-GBV IgG) in serum specimens of 1469 individuals from the 3 provinces (region). RESULTS: The positivity rate of serum GBV-IgG antibody in ethnic minorities (4.11% in Tibetan, 5.36% in Mongolian, 4.55% in Uigur, 4.00% in Hui population) was slightly higher than that in Han population (1.36%-1.73%), but the differences were not significant (P>0.05). The positivity rate of serum GBV-IgG antibody in drug abusers (11.30%, 34/301) was remarkably higher than that of the normal population (2.44%,18/736) (P<0.01). The positivity rate of serum GBV-IgG antibody in blood donors was 1.02%-7.68%. CONCLUSIONS: The positivity rates of serum GBV-IgG antibody among ethnic groups in the 3 provinces (region) had no significant differences; blood-borne transmission seemed to be an important transmission route of GBV, therefore supervision of blood donors and drug abusers should be intensified.
Vapour pressure effect of sample evaporation in blowing powder sample into arc discharge is described in this paper. Since vapour pressure of basic composition of sample in arc is very high, evaporation of this basic composition will be reduced greatly, and the evaporation of impurity elements in the sample are stronger than basic composition, because vapour pressure of impurity elements in arc are lower than the basic composition. This effect is characteristic in sample evaporation during blowing powder sample into arc source. Determination limit of this method is therefore lowered due to the existence of this effect.
Experiments on chaotically oscillating arrays of 64 nickel electrodes in sulfuric acid were carried out. External resistors in parallel and series are added to vary the extent of global coupling among the oscillators without changing the other properties of the system. The array is heterogeneous due to small variations in the properties of the electrodes and there is also a small amount of noise. The addition of global coupling transforms a system of independent elements to a state of complete synchronization. At intermediate coupling strengths stable clusters, or condensates of elements, form. All the elements in a cluster follow the same chaotic trajectory but each cluster has its own dynamics; the system is thus temporally chaotic but spatially ordered. Many cluster configurations occur under the same conditions and transitions among them can be produced. For values of the coupling parameter on either side of the stable cluster region a non-stationary behavior occurs in which clustered and synchronized states alternately form and break up. Some statistical properties of the cluster states are determined. (c) 2000 American Institute of Physics.
The reaction of octaethylporphyrin iron(III) chloride with potassium crown ether (18-crown-6) nitrite in N-methylpyrrolidone-1% acetic acid under argon generates the iron(III) nitrite salt (PFeNO(2)). The latter is a unique and selective oxygen atom transfer reagent. The reaction of a broad range of substrates (S) proceeds quantitatively to yield the oxidized substrate and the iron(II) porphyrin-nitrosyl adduct: PFeNO(2) + S --> PFeNO + SO. Diatomic molecules to which oxygen is directly transferred from PFeNO(2) are NO, CO, and O(2). The conversion NO to NO(2) is shown via (15)NO(2)(-) labeling experiments to proceed exclusively by the O atom transfer process. The ozone, generated from dioxygen, was trapped with nitrite ion and the two olefins 2-methyl-2 butene and 2,3-dimethyl-2 butene. These substances are inert to PFeNO(2) under argon. However, in an oxygen-saturated reaction mixture, nitrite produced nitrate. The olefins, following reduction of the reaction mixture with Zn/HOAc, yielded 1 mol of acetone and acetaldehyde and 2 mol of acetone, respectively. Other simple O atom transfers under argon were observed with dimethyl sulfide and triphenylphosphine. The PFeNO(2) reagent shows a preference for O insertion into allylic, benzylic, and aldehydic C-H bonds. Thus, no olefin containing these moieties is epoxidized. However, styrene and cis-stilbene are converted to styrene oxide and cis-stilbene oxide, respectively. The double oxidation of allylbenzene to trans-cinnamaldehyde entails an allylic rearrangement that suggests radical character to the O insertion process. However, no kinetic evidence for this was obtained. The reaction is an overall third-order process, rate = k(PFe(III))(NO(2)(-))(S). There was no correlation of observed rates with relevant C-H bond dissociation energies of substrates. The fastest reacting substrate was nitric oxide (k(22) degrees = 52 M(-)(2) s(-)(1)) and the slowest was toluene (k(50) degrees = 6.3 x 10(-)(4) M(-)(2) s(-)(1)). The range and selectivity of these O atom transfers sets them apart from the catalytic oxidations brought about by reactions of iron(III) porphyrins with peroxides, iodosoaryls, hypochlorite, and other oxidants. The driving force for the relatively mild oxidations with PFeNO(2) resides in the thermodynamic stability of the heme-NO adduct. Given the broad presence of nitrite in the environment and the ubiquity of porphyrins in the biosphere, the activation of nitrite by iron porphyrins has both an environmental and biochemical significance.
The authors report a 48-year-old Chinese woman who presented with acute peripheral neuritis with progressive alopecia. Laboratory examinations disclosed a high blood concentration of thallium (97 microg/L) versus a normal value (0.9 microg/L), and she was diagnosed as having acute thallotoxicosis. After her hospitalization, the cutantest of dimercaptopropansulfonate sodium was positive and the patient refused to take Prussian blue because it caused constipation. She rapidly entered remission after assistance via double-filtration plasmapheresis (DFPP), suggesting the potential efficacy of DFPP for thallotoxicosis.
This case report is about the combined use of modified electroconvulsive treatment and an atypical antipsychotic drug, olanzapine, in the treatment of a 20-year-old man with chronic and refractory catatonic stupor. This patient, with a preexisting diagnosis of autism, posturing, nonverbal communication, and contracture of lower extremities, displaying mutism, akinesia, and an extreme level of rigidity, waxy flexibility, and posturing, was diagnosed as with catatonic stupor. After hospitalization, the disease had progressed despite the treatment with an atypical antipsychotic drug, olanzapine. Modified electroconvulsive treatment together with olanzapine caused a dramatic clinical improvement. Follow-up outpatient treatment with olanzapine improved his social functions.
