Investigations of EPR parameters for the trigonal Ti3+-Ti3+ pair in beryl crystal.

By using the complete diagonalization of energy matrix of 3d1 ions in trigonal symmetry, the EPR parameters (g factors g( parallel), g( perpendicular) and zero-field splitting D) of the trigonal Ti3+-Ti3+ pair in beryl crystal are calculated. In the calculations, the exchange interaction in the Ti3+-Ti3+ pair is taken as the perturbation and the local trigonal distortion in the defect center is considered. The results (which are in agreement with the experimental values) are discussed.

Investigations of the EPR g factors and hyperfine structure constants for two trigonal Co2+ centers in Al2O3 crystals.

The EPR g factors gparallel, gperpendicular and the hyperfine structure constants Aparallel, Aperpendicular for two trigonal Co2+ centers (i.e. Co2+(I) center at the substitutional site and Co2+(II) center at the interstitial site) in Al2O3 crystals are calculated from the second-order perturbation formulas based on the cluster approach. In these formulas, the contributions to EPR parameters from both the spin-orbit coupling parameter of central 3dn ion and that of ligand are included. The calculated results are in reasonable agreement with the observed values. Based on the calculations, the defect structures of both Co2+ centers in Al2O3 crystals are obtained and the negative sign of Aparallel for Co2+(I) center is suggested. The results are discussed.

Defect models of the three trigonal Ti3+ centers in LiF:Ti3+ and LiF:Ti3+:Mg2+ crystals.

The EPR g factors of the trigonal Ti3+ center A in LiF:Ti3+ and two additional trigonal Ti3+ centers B and C in LiF:Ti3+:Mg2+ crystals are calculated from the third-order perturbation formulas based on the cluster approach. From the calculations and by considering the Ti3+ displacement along 111 axis obtained by ENDOR experiment, the defect models for the three Ti3+ centers are suggested. For center A, there are two possible models: (i) [Ti3+F3-O3(2-)] cluster and (ii) [Ti3+F6-] cluster with the Ti3+ off-center caused by a neighboring Li+ vacancy (VLi+) at <111> axis. The latter seems the more likely. The defect models of centers B and C are the [Ti3+F3-O(3)2-] clusters associated with a neighboring: Mg2+ ion at the Li+ site along 111 axis in the vicinity of three F- ions and three O2- ions, respectively. The reasonableness of these models is discussed.

Studies of the trigonal field parameters and g factors for magnetic semiconductor NaCrS2.

The trigonal field parameters v and v' of magnetic semiconductor NaCrS2 are calculated from the superposition model, and its g factors g parallel and g perpendicular are calculated from the high-order perturbation formulas of 3d3 ions in trigonal symmetry obtained by the one and two spin-orbit coupling parameter models. These calculations are based on the structural data of NaCrS2 crystal. The calculated results suggest that the superposition model is effective to the analyses of the low-symmetry field parameters of 3dn ions in crystals and that the two spin-orbit coupling parameter model (where the contributions from both the spin-orbit coupling parameter of 3dn ion and that of ligand are considered) is preferable to the one spin-orbit coupling parameter model (in which the contribution from only the spin-orbit coupling parameter of 3dn ion is considered) in the explanations of g factors in the cases that ligands have large spin-orbit coupling parameter in 3dn clusters.

Tetragonal distortions of some tetragonal Cr3+ centers in fluoroperovskite ABF3 crystals.

The tetragonal distortions [characterized by the displacement DeltaR of the F(-) ion intervening in Cr(3+) and V(B) (B(2+) vacancy) or M(+) ion in B(2+) site] for Cr(3+)-V(B) and Cr(3+)-Li(+) centers in Cr(3+)-doped fluoroperovskites KBF(3) (B=Mg, Zn) and ACdF(3) (A=K, Rb, Cs) and also for Cr(3+)-Na(+) center in KZnF(3) have been studied by calculating the EPR parameters D, g(parallel) and g(perpendicular) from the crystal-field theory. From the studies, an interesting trend is suggested, i.e., when the size of the co-doped monovalent impurity M(+) in the nearest neighbor B(2+) site is comparable to that of the replaced B(2+) ion, the displacement DeltaR of the intervening F(-) ion in Cr(3+)-M(+) center is smaller than that in Cr(3+)-V(B) center and if the M(+) iron is much smaller or much larger than that of the replaced B(2+) ion, the displacement DeltaR in Cr(3+)-M(+) center is greater than that in Cr(3+)-V(B) center. The causes of the trend are discussed.

Studies of the EPR g factor for Ni2+ ion in CsMgX3 (X=Cl, Br, I) crystals.

The complete high-order perturbation formula of g factor, including not only the widely used crystal-field (CF) mechanism, but also the neglected change-transfer (CT) mechanism in the CF theory, is established for a 3d8 ion in cubic octahedral site. From the formula, the g-shifts Deltag (=g-gs, where gs approximately 2.0023, the value of free electron) of Ni2+ ion in CsMgX3 (X=Cl, Br, I) crystals are calculated. The results suggest that the g-shift DeltagCT due to the CT mechanism and the DeltagCF due to CF mechanism have the same sign and the importance of DeltagCT follows the order: CsMgI3: Ni2+>CsMgBr3: Ni2+>CsMgCl3: Ni2+. So, in the calculations of g or Deltag of 3dn MXm clusters in crystals, the contributions to g factor from both the CT and CF mechanisms should be taken into account in the case of heavy-element ligand ions, such as Br- and I- ions.

Advanced information feedback in intelligent traffic systems.

The optimal information feedback is very important to many socioeconomic systems like stock market and traffic systems aiming to make full use of resources. As to traffic flow, a reasonable real-time information feedback can improve the urban traffic condition by providing route guidance. In this paper, the influence of a feedback strategy named congestion coefficient feedback strategy is introduced, based on a two-route scenario in which dynamic information can be generated and displayed on the board to guide road users to make a choice. Simulation results adopting this optimal information feedback strategy have demonstrated high efficiency in controlling spatial distribution of traffic patterns compared with the other two information feedback strategies, i.e., travel time and mean velocity.

Gyromagnetic factor of Cr4+ ions in forsterite.

The average value of g factor (i.e., g ) of Cr4+ ions in forsterite (Mg2SiO4) is calculated with the cubic symmetry approximation from the complete high-order perturbation formula of g factor for 3d2 ion in cubic tetrahedral cluster. In the formula, the contribution to g factor from the charge-transfer mechanism (which is neglected in the crystal-field theory) is considered in addition to that from the widely used crystal-field mechanism. From the calculations, the reasonable observed value of g is suggested (note: the experimental values of g by various authors are scattered) and the important contribution of charge-transfer mechanism to g factor can be found.

Investigations of the optical spectra and EPR parameters in CaWO4:Yb3+.

In this paper, we calculate the optical spectra data (crystal-field energy levels), the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) g factors gparallel, gperpendicular of Yb3+ and hyperfine structure constants Aparallel, Aperpendicular of 171Yb3+ and 173Yb3+ isotopes in CaWO4 crystal in a unified way from the crystal-field theory. All the calculated results are in good agreement with the experimental values. The signs of Aparallel and Aperpendicular for both isotopes 171Yb3+ and 173Yb3+ are suggested.

Investigations of EPR parameters and local lattice distortions for both Co2+ centers in La2Mg3(NO3)12.24H2O crystal.

The EPR g factors, g parallel and g perpendicular, of Co2+ and hyperfine structure constants (A parallel, A perpendicular) of 59Co2+ and 60Co2+ isotopes in both trigonal Mg2+ sites of La2Mg3(NO3)12.24H2O crystal are calculated from the high-order perturbation formulas of EPR parameters based on the cluster approach for 3d7 ion. It is found that to explain reasonably all these EPR parameters, the local relaxation effects (particularly, those related to the trigonal distortion angles thetai) in the vicinity of both Co2+ impurities should be considered. The local angles thetai are obtained from the calculations and the results are discussed.

EPR g factors of trigonal Dy(3+) center in ThO(2) crystal.

The perturbation formulas of EPR g factors g(parallel) and g( perpendicular ) for the lowest Kramers doublet of 6H(15/2) of a 4f(9) ion in trigonal symmetry are established in this paper. In these formulas, besides the contribution due to the interaction within the lowest 6H(15/2) manifolds considered in the previous papers, the contributions due to the J-mixing among the 6H(15/2), 6H(13/2) (first excited state) and 6H(11/2) (second excited state) via crystal-field interaction, the admixtures among the states with the same J value via spin-orbit coupling interaction and those between the lowest Kramers doublet Gammagamma and other Kramers doublets Gamma(X) within the states 6H(J) (J=15/2,13/2,11/2) via crystal-field and orbital angular momentum interactions are included. From these formulas, the g factors g(parallel) and g( perpendicular ) for the trigonal Dy(3+) center in ThO(2) crystal are calculated. The results are discussed.
