Particle size distributions of oil mists in workplace atmospheres and their exposure concentrations to workers in a fastener manufacturing industry.

This study was set out to characterize size distributions of oil mists in three workplace atmospheres of the forming, threading, and heat treatment in a fastener manufacturing industry and to assess their exposures to workers. Particle size segregating samplings were conducted on the workplace atmospheres of the three selected industrial processes by using the modified Marple 8-stage cascade impactor (m-Marple). We found that mass median aerodynamic diameter (MMAD) of the fine mode and coarse mode fell to the range 0.309-0.501 microm and 8.16-13.0 microm, respectively. The fractions of inhaled particles exposed to different regions of the respiratory tracts found that the alveolar region was consistently higher than both head and tracheobronchial regions in all three studied exposure groups. Personal inhalable oil mist samplings were conducted on workers in the three selected processes revealed their exposure levels as: threading workers (2.11 mg/m3)>forming workers (1.58 mg/m3)>heat treatment workers (0.0801 mg/m3). The estimated respirable exposure concentrations for both forming and threading workers (1.34 mg/m3 and 1.40 mg/m3, respectively) were higher than the level known for "increased risk of pulmonary injury" (0.20 mg/m3) suggesting that appropriate control measures should be taken to reduce their exposures to the oil mists of the respirable fraction immediately.

Levels of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in breast milk from central Taiwan and their relation to infant birth outcome and maternal menstruation effects.

In utero exposure to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) reduces the number of ovarian follicles in rat females and causes permanent effects on rat males. Little data have been gathered on the associations between PBDEs exposure and birth outcome and female menstruation characteristics in both epidemiological and animal studies. The aim of this study was to examine how PBDEs in breast milk are associated with infant birth outcome and maternal menstruation characteristics. Study participants were healthy women recruited from central Taiwan between December 2000 and November 2001. Twelve congener levels of PBDEs (BDE-17, 28, 47, 66, 85, 99, 100, 138, 153, 154, 183, 209) in 20 breast milk samples were measured by gas chromatography with high resolution mass spectrometer. The mean level of PBDEs in breast milk was 3.93+/-1.74 ng/g lipid. The estimated PBDE daily intake for a breastfed infant was 20.6 ng/kg b.w./day after delivery. After maternal age, pre-pregnant BMI, and parity were adjusted, increased PBDEs in breast milk was related with decreased birth outcome, particularly for birth weight and length, chest circumference, and Quetelet's index of infants. No significant differences in PBDEs were found between the two groups of menstrual cycle length higher and lower than 30 days after we adjusted for maternal age, pre-pregnant BMI, and parity. In utero exposure to low doses of PBDEs may result in lower birth weight and short or birth length. Our findings are limited based on the low doses of PBDEs and the small sampling size.

Study of ambient air particulates pollutants near Taichung airport sampling site in central Taiwan.

This study monitored the atmospheric pollutants at Taichung airport (TA) sampling site during September to December of 2005 near Taiwan Strait in central Taiwan. The distributions of the particle concentrations between the TSP, coarse and fine were also displayed at TA sampling site. Analysis the average percentage of various kinds of metallic elements, the data obtained here indicated that the average percentage concentrations of metallic elements Fe and Mg were higher in fine particulate than that of the coarse particulate at Taichung airport sampling site. These foundry factories were by the TA sampling site was the possible reason responsible for this result. In addition, by a non-parametric (Spearman) correlation analysis, the results indicated that Fe, Mn and Pb have high correlation coefficients of metallic elements in different particle size. The results indicate that the airport pollutants might come from similar pollutant sources at this airport sampling site. In addition, high correlation coefficients of non-airport pollutants were observed on the ionic species of SO(4)(2-), NH(4)(+) and K(+). The r(sp) correlate values between closed to r(sp)=0.7 and 0.9 at different particles size mode. Besides, the ionic Ca(2+) has high negative values (r(sp)=-0.66, -0.66 and 0.61) with the increasing of the temperature, relative humidity and wind speed, respectively at fine particle size.

Atmosphic pollutants study of particles ionic species during high wind speed (>7 m s(-1)) near Taiwan strait in central Taiwan from 2004 to 2005.

This study monitored atmospheric pollutants during high wind speed (> 7 m s(-1)) at two sampling sites: Taichung Harbor (TH) and Wuci traffic (WT) during March 2004 to January 2005 in central Taiwan. The correlation coefficient (R (2)) between TSP, PM(2.5), PM(2.5-10) particle concentration vs. wind speed at the TH and WT sampling site during high wind speed (< 7 m s(-1)) were also displayed in this study. In addition, the correlation coefficients between TSP, PM(2.5) and PM(2.5-10) of ionic species vs. high wind speed were also observed. The results indicated that the correlation coefficient order was TSP > PM(2.5-10) > PM(2.5) for particle at both sampling sites near Taiwan strait. In addition, the concentration of Cl(-), NO(3) (-), SO(4) (2-), NH(4) (+), Mg(2+), Ca(2+) and Na(+) were also analyzed in this study.

Influence of meteorological parameters on particulates and atmospheric pollutants at Taichung harbor sampling site.

Atmospheric aerosol particles and metallic concentrations, ionic species were monitored at the Experimental harbor of Taichung sampling site in this study. This work attempted to characterize metallic elements and ionic species associated with meteorological conditions variation on atmospheric particulate matter in TSP, PM2.5, PM2.5-10. The concentration distribution trend between TSP, PM2.5, PM2.5-10 particle concentration at the TH (Taichung harbor) sampling site were also displayed in this study. Besides, the meteorological conditions variation of metallic elements (Fe, Mg, Cr, Cu, Zn, Mn and Pb) and ions species (Cl(-), NO3 (-), SO4 (2-), NH4+, Mg2+, Ca2+ and Na+) concentrations attached with those particulate were also analyzed in this study. On non-parametric (Spearman) correlation analysis, the results indicated that the meteorological conditions have high correlation at largest particulate concentrations for TSP at TH sampling site in this study. In addition, the temperature and relative humidity of meteorological conditions that played a key role to affect particulate matter (PM) and have higher correlations then other meteorological conditions such as wind speed and atmospheric pressure. The parameter temperature and relative humidity also have high correlations with atmospheric pollutants compared with those of the other meteorological variables (wind speed, atmospheric pressure and prevalent wind direction). In addition, relative statistical equations between pollutants and meteorological variables were also characterized in this study.

A review of atmospheric fine particulate matter and its associated trace metal pollutants in Asian countries during the period 1995-2005.

Many studies have monitored atmospheric particulates and gaseous phases of PM(2.5) in Asia over the past 10 years. This work also compared and discussed different sample collection, pretreatment and analytical methods in Asia countries in past decade. The results indicated that the main PM(2.5) sources are traffic exhausts. PM(2.5) concentrations are also ranked highest in the areas of traffic, followed by the urban sites, and lowest in rural sites in Asian countries. This work elucidates the sources, analytical tools, and the average concentrations for PM(2.5) and related metallic elements during 1995-2005. The results indicated that the average highest concentrations order of metallic elements for PM(2.5) were Fe>Mg>Zn, and the average concentrations of lowest metallic elements was Pb>Cu>Mn>Cr>Cd. The results also indicated that the concentration of metallic element Cu increased as the averaged concentrations of metallic element Zn and Mn increased during the past 10 years in Asian countries.

Saving energy and reducing emissions of both polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and particulate matter by adding bio-solution to emulsified diesel.

Development of emulsified diesel has been driven by the need to reduce emissions from diesel engines and to save energy. Emulsification technology and bio-solution (NOE-7F) were used to produce emulsified diesel in this study. The experimental results indicated that there were no significant separation layers in W13 (13 wt % water + 87 wt % PDF), W16 (16 wt % water + 84 wt % PDF), W19 (19 wt % water + 81 wt % PDF), E13 (13 wt % NOE-7F water + 87 wt % PDF), E16 (16 wt % NOE-7F water + 83 wt % PDF), and E19 (19 wt % NOE-7F water + 81 wt % PDF) after premium diesel fuel (PDF) was emulsified for more than 30 days. In addition, there was no significant increase in damage from using these six emulsified fuels after the operation of the diesel generator for more than one year. The energy saving and reduction of particulate matter (PM) and total polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) for W13, W16, W19, E13, E16 and E19, respectively, were 3.90%, 30.9%, 27.6%; 3.38%, 37.0%, 34.9%; 2.17%, 22.2%, 15.4%; 5.87%, 38.6%, 49.3%; 5.88%, 57.8%, 58.0%; and 4.75%, 31.1%, 47.3%, compared with PDF. The above results revealed that the bio-solution (NOE-7F) had a catalytic effect which elevated the combustion efficiency and decreased pollutant emissions during the combustion process. Furthermore, bio-solution (NOE-7F) can stabilize the emulsified fuels and enhance energy saving. Thus, emulsified fuels are highly suitable for use as alternative fuels. Due to the increasing price of diesel, emulsified diesel containing NOE-7F has potential for commercial application.

Water-soluble ions in nano/ultrafine/fine/coarse particles collected near a busy road and at a rural site.

This study investigated water-soluble ions in the sized particles (particularly nano (PM(0.01-0.056))/ultrafine (PM(0.01-0.1))) collected using MOUDI and Nano-MOUDI samplers near a busy road site and at a rural site. The analytical results demonstrate that nano and coarse particles exhibited the highest (16.3%) and lowest (8.37%) nitrate mass ratios, respectively. The mass ratio of NO(3)(-) was higher than that of SO(4)(2-) in all the sized particles at the traffic site. The secondary aerosols all displayed trimodal distributions. The aerosols in ultrafine particles collected at the roadside site exhibited Aitken mode distributions indicating they were of local origin. This finding was not observed for those ultrafine particles collected at the rural site. The mass median diameters (MMDs) of the nano, ultrafine, and fine particles were smaller at the traffic site than at the rural site, possibly related to the contribution of mobile engine emissions.

Apply appropriate statistic methods in analyzing ambient air particulate and metallic elements concentrations at a traffic sampling site.

A study of the characteristics of the metallic elements concentrations in fine and coarse particulates at traffic sampling site in central Taiwan by using appropriate statistical analysis methods was described in this paper. The Spearman correlation analysis and non-linear regression analysis were used to analyze the collected data during sampling period from August 2003 to March 2004. During a half-month analysis periods, the average metallic elements concentrations, the major meteorological effects and temporal variation were discussed in this study. The major meteorological parameters during daytime and nighttime sampling periods are temperature, average wind velocity and prevailing wind degree. The relationships between the metallic elements concentrations and meteorological parameters in fine and coarse particulates during daytime and nighttime are also established in this paper. According to the proposed equations, the variation of the particle concentrations can be predicted with known meteorological parameters during daytime and nighttime at traffic sampling site in central Taiwan.

Arsenic inhibits induction of cytochrome P450 1A1 by 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin in human hepatoma cells.

The aim of this study was to examine the arsenic effect on activation of aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR)-mediated gene expression by 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (2,3,7,8-TCDD) in human hepatoma cells. The human hepatoma Huh7 cells were treated with sodium arsenite (NaAsO2) from 0.5 to 20 microM for 24 h. Our data revealed that NaAsO2 < or = 10 microM caused no significant cytotoxic effect on Huh7 cells (p>0.05). We also established a dioxin-responsive element (DRE)-mediated Chemical Activated LUciferase eXpression (CALUX) cell line, Huh7-DRE-Luc, by stable transfection of Huh7 with a DRE-driven firefly luciferase reporter plasmid (4xDRE-TATA-Luc). Treatments of Huh7-DRE-Luc and Huh7 with NaAsO2 attenuated the 2,3,7,8-TCDD-induced DRE-CALUX and cytochrome P450 1A1 (CYP1A1) activations, respectively, in a dose-dependent manner. We found that the calculated CALUX-toxic equivalent (TEQ) levels induced by cotreatment of NaAsO2 > or = 3.0 microM and 10 nM 2,3,7,8-TCDD were significantly lower than that induced by 2,3,7,8-TCDD alone (p<0.05). In the present study, we demonstrated that arsenic not only inhibited the TCDD-induced CYP1A1 activation but also interfered with DRE-CALUX bioassay in human hepatoma cells. Our finding also suggests that extensive cleanup of sample for removal of any possible interfering factor is critical to guarantee the accuracy of dioxin-TEQ levels using DRE-CALUX bioassay.

Characterization of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from the diesel engine by adding light cycle oil to premium diesel fuel.

Diesel fuels governed by U.S. regulations are based on the index of the total aromatic contents. Three diesel fuels, containing various fractions of light cycle oil (LCO) and various sulfur, total polyaromatic, and total aromatic contents, were used in a heavy-duty diesel engine (HDDE) under transient cycle test to assess the feasibility of using current indices in managing the emissions of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from HDDE. The mean sulfur content in LCO is 20.8 times as much as that of premium diesel fuel (PDF). The mean total polyaromatic content in LCO is 28.7 times as much as that of PDF, and the mean total aromatic content in LCO is 2.53 times as much as that of PDF. The total polyaromatic hydrocarbon emission factors in the exhaust from the diesel engine, as determined using PDF L3.5 (3.5% LCO and 96.5% PDF), L7.5 (7.5% LCO and 92.5% PDF), and L15 (15% LCO and 85% PDF) were 14.3, 25.8, 44, and 101 mg L(-1), respectively. The total benzo(a)pyrene equivalent (BaPeq) emission factors in the exhaust from PDF, L3.5, L7.5, and L15 were 0.0402, 0.121, 0.219, and 0.548 mg L(-1), respectively. Results indicated that using L3.5 instead of PDF will result in an 80.4% and a 201% increase of emission for total PAHs and total BaPeq, respectively. The relationships between the total polyaromatic hydrocarbon emission factor and the two emission control indices, including fuel polyaromatic content and fuel aromatic content, suggest that both indices could be used feasibly to regulate total PAH emissions. These results strongly suggest that LCO used in the traveling diesel vehicles significantly influences PAH emissions.

Emissions of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans from various industrial sources.

This study characterized the emissions of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) from the stack flue gases of 17 industrial sources, which were classified into 10 categories. The results show that the mean PCDD/PCDF concentration of secondary zinc smelter (Zn-S) and secondary copper smelter (Cu-S) is 2.44 ng international toxic equivalent (I-TEQ)/Nm3 (N represents normal conditions at 0 degrees C, 760 mmHg), which was found to be significantly greater than that of industrial waste incinerators (mean concentration = 0.15 ng I-TEQ/Nm3). These results imply that the controlling of secondary metallurgical melting processes is more important than industrial waste incineration for the reduction of PCDD/PCDF emissions. The mean emission factors of cement production, Zn-S and Cu-S, are 0.052, 1.99, and 1.73 microg I-TEQ/t product, respectively. For industrial waste incineration, the mean emission factors of waste rubber, waste liquor, waste sludge, industrial waste solid (IWI)-1, IWI-2, IWI-3, and IWI-4 are 0.752, 0.435, 0.760, 6.64, 1.67, 2.38, and 0.094 microg I-TEQ/t feed, respectively. Most of the PCDD/PCDF emission factors established in this study are less than those reported in previous studies, which could be because of the more stringent regulations for PCDD/PCDF emissions in recent years.

Seasonal variation in concentration and metallic constituents of atmospheric particulates near the western coast of central Taiwan.

In addition to determining the concentration and metallic constituents of particulate matter at Taichung Harbor in central Taiwan, this study attempts to characterize the mass, metallic elements, composition and concentrations of total suspended particulates (TSP), fine particles and coarse particles. Statistical approaches, such as the Spearman tests, were also adopted to determine the seasonal variations of concentrations of these pollutants. Experimental results indicate that the mean TSP, fine particulate and coarse particulate concentrations in spring and winter are higher than in summer and autumn on the western coast of central Taiwan. Spearman statistical analysis of metallic elements Mn and Pb showed high concentration coefficients for fine and coarse particulates on the western coast of central Taiwan. The order of mean metallic concentrations in TSP, coarse particulates and fine particles was Fe > Zn > Mg > Cu> Cr > Mn > Pb in TSP, Fe > Cu > Zn > Mg > Mn > Pb > Cr in coarse particulates and Fe > Cu > Mg > Pb > Zn > Mn > Cr in fine particulates.

Characterization of dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) in the atmosphere of different workplaces of a sinter plant.

This study investigated concentrations, contents and congener profiles of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) in the workplaces of a sintering plant. Air samples were collected from the charging zone, the sintering zones of the sintering grate and the rough roll shredder, and the control room. The charging zone was found to have a higher total suspended particulate (TSP) but lower PCDD/F concentrations (=4969 microg nm(-3) and 7.61 pg nm(-3), respectively) than the sintering zone (=1422-1448 microg nm(-3) and 19.16-23.17 pg nm(-3), respectively). The TSP and PCDD/F concentrations were lowest in the control room (=98 microg nm(-3) and 1.75 pg nm(-3), respectively). However, the above concentrations were within the range of a typical urban-industrial area. Quite similar PCDD/F contents were found in particles in the sintering zones and control room (=11.72-14.30 and 15.85 ng g(-1), respectively) suggesting that the sintering zone and the control room are very similar. In both charging and sintering zones, 2,3,4,7,8-PeCDF contributed 40-60% to the total I-TEQ in both the gas phase and particle phase. However, in control room, both congeners 2,3,4,7,8-PeCDF and 2,3,7,8-TCDD were the main contributors; the later contributed 30% of the total I-TEQ in gas phase. In control room, the contribution of 2,3,7,8-TCDD to the total PCDD/F concentration in the gas phase greatly exceeded that in particle phase (=5.5% and 0.8%, respectively). Therefore, solutions must be sought to avoid the transfer of not only the particle-phase but also the gas-phase PCDD/Fs from the sintering zone to the control room in the future.

Emissions of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans from stack gases of electric arc furnaces and secondary aluminum smelters.

This study investigates the emissions of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) from four electric arc furnaces (EAFs) and eight secondary aluminum smelters (secondary ALSs) in Taiwan. The mean PCDD/F International-Toxicity Equivalents (I-TEQ) concentrations in the stack gases of these EAFs and secondary ALSs are 0.28 ng I-TEQ/Nm3 (relative standard deviation [RSD]= 100%) and 3.3 ng I-TEQ/Nm3 (RSD = 260%), respectively. The high RSDs, especially for those obtained from secondary ALSs, could be caused by the intrinsic differences in their involved feeding materials, furnace operating conditions, and air pollution control devices. The mean I-TEQ emission factor of PCDD/Fs for EAFs (1.8 microg I-TEQ/tonne-feedstock) is lower than that for secondary ALSs (37 microg I-TEQ/tonne-feedstock). This result might be because the involved furnace temperatures for secondary ALSs (650-750 degrees C) are lower than those for EAFs (1600-1700 degrees C), resulting in the deterioration of the combustion condition, leading to the formation of PCDD/Fs during the industrial process. This study found that the total PCDD/F emissions from EAFs (20 g I-TEQ/yr) and secondary ALSs (18 g I-TEQ/yr) are approximately 27, 53, and approximately 24, 49 times higher than those from municipal solid waste incinerators (MSWIs; 0.74 g I-TEQ/yr) and medical waste incinerators (MWIs; 0.37 g I-TEQ/yr), respectively; while those are 44 and 40% of total PCDD/F emission from sinter plants (45 g I-TEQ/ yr), respectively. Considering a more stringent emission limit has been applied to waste incinerators (0.1 ng I-TEQ/Nm3) in Taiwan lately, the results suggest that the control of the emissions from metallurgical processes has become the most important issue for reducing the total PCDD/F emission from industrial sectors to the ambient environment.

Emissions of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from batch hot mix asphalt plants.

This study was set out to assess the characteristics of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emissions from batch hot mix asphalt (HMA) plants and PAH removal efficiencies associated with their installed air pollution control devices. Field samplings were conducted on six randomly selected batch HMA plants. For each selected plant, stack flue gas samples were collected from both stacks of the batch mixer (n = 5) and the preheating boiler (n = 5), respectively. PAH samples were also collected from the field to assess PAHs that were directly emitted from the discharging chute (n = 3). To assess PAH removal efficiencies of the installed air pollution control devices, PAH contents in both cyclone fly ash (n=3) and bag filter fly ash (n = 3) were analyzed. Results show that the total PAH concentration (mean; RSD) in the stack flue gas of the batch mixer (354 microg/Nm3; 78.5%) was higher than that emitted from the discharging chute (107 microg/Nm3; 70.1%) and that in the stack flue gas of the preheating boiler (83.7 microg/Nm3; 77.6%). But the total BaPeq concentration of that emitted from the discharging chute (0.950 microg/Nm3; 84.4%) was higher than contained in the stack flue gas of the batch mixer (0.629 microg/Nm3; 86.8%) and the stack flue gas of the preheating boiler (= 0.112 microg/Nm3; 80.3%). The mean total PAH emission factor for all selected batch mix plants (= 139 mg/ton x product) was much higher than that reported by U.S. EPA for the drum mix asphalt plant (range = 11.8-79.0 mg/ton x product). We found the overall removal efficiency of the installed air pollution control devices (i.e., cyclone + bag filter) on total PAHs and total BaPeq were 22.1% and 93.7%, respectively. This implies that the installed air pollution control devices, although they have a very limited effect on the removal of total PAHs, do significantly reduce the carcinogenic potencies associated with PAH emissions from batch HMA plants.

Source identification of PCDD/Fs for various atmospheric environments in a highly industrialized city.

This study set out to identify possible PCDD/F emission sources for different atmospheric environments in a highly industrialized city located in southern Taiwan. We collected stack flue gas samples from five main stationary emission sources of the municipal solid waste incinerators (MSWIs), medical waste incinerators (MWIs), electric arc furnaces (EAFs), secondary aluminum smelters (ALSs), and sinter plants to assess the characteristics of their PCDD/F emissions. For mobile sources, congener profiles reported in U.S. EPA's database for unleaded gas-fueled vehicles (UGFV) and diesel-fueled vehicles (DFV) were directly adopted owing to lack of local data. The congener profiles of the 2,3,7,8-substituted PCDD/Fs were selected as the signatures of these PCDD/F emission sources. We conducted PCDD/F samplings on atmospheric environments of four categories, including background, residential area, traffic area, and industrial area. Through PCA and cluster analyses, we found that traffic areas were most influenced by PCDD/F emissions from UGFV and DFV, while those of industrial areas were mainly influenced by metallurgical facilities and MWIs. The above results were further examined by using the methodology of the indicatory PCDD/Fs. We confirmed that traffic areas were contributed by traffic sources, but industrial areas were simply affected by metallurgical facilities rather than MWIs. In conclusion, besides the use of PCA and cluster analyses, the methodology of the indicatory PCDD/Fs should be conducted for further validation in order to prevent misjudgment.

Urinary 1-hydroxypyrene as an indicator for assessing the exposures of booth attendants of a highway toll station to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

In this study, 32 booth attendants (the exposure group) and 21 in pre-job training to become booth attendants (the reference group) were randomly selected from a highway toll station. Personal PAH samplings were conducted on the exposure group on each day during the studied workweek. Pre-shift urinary 1-hydroxylpyrene levels (1-OHP) were measured on the first day of the workweek (BM(pre)) for both the exposure and reference groups, but the post-shift 1-OHP levels were measured on the last day of the workweek (BM(pest)) only for the exposure group. For the exposure group, we found that their mean total PAH exposure level (C(total PAHs)) was 11 400 ng/m3 and that their mean BM(post) was significantly higher than their mean BM(pre) (= 3.02 and 0.910 micromol of 1-OHP/mol of creatinine, respectively). In addition, the mean BM(pre) for the exposure group were higher than that for the reference group (= 0.410 micromol of 1-OHP/mol of creatinine). The above results suggest that vehicle exhaust significantly affects the booth attendants' 1-OHP levels. None of the three personal factors (age, work experience, and smoking habit), except for C(total PAHs), had a significant effect on predicting booth attendants' BM(inc) levels (= BM(post) - BM(pre)) (R2 = 0.57). The above results suggest that urinary 1-OHP could be a suitable biomarker for characterizing workers' PAH exposures. Similarly, we found that none of the three personal characteristics, except for the involved vehicle flow rates and vehicle types, had a significant effect on predicting booth attendants' BM(inc), levels (R2 = 0.60). The above result suggests that the traffic densities of various traffic types could be a suitable surrogate indicator for assessing workers' PAH exposures. Considering that the type of traffic designed for a given type of tollbooth is quite similar all over the world, the results obtained from this study, at least, could be served as a stepping-stone for providing a cheaper and convenient way for assessing traffic PAH exposures in the future.
