X-shaped oligothiophenes as a new class of electron donors for bulk-heterojunction solar cells.

Four X-shaped oligothiophenes with different conjugation length were investigated as novel electron donors in single-layer bulk-heterojunction solar cells. The UV-vis absorption spectra of blends of compounds 1-4 with 1-(3-methoxycarbonyl)propyl-1-phenyl[6,6]C(61) show a remarkably red shift and broadening with increasing thiophene number at each of the four branches. The performance of the photovoltaic cells varied significantly with molecular structures of the four oligothiophenes. Conversion efficiencies increased from 0.008% to 0.8% with changing the electron donors from 1 to 4. The maximum incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency of the device based on 4 reaches 31.6%, much higher than those of three other compounds 1-3. Remarkable improvement of the device performance was achieved with increasing the substituted thiophene number. The results show that the photovoltaic effect is dependent on the structural characteristics and the film forming abilities of the X-shaped thiophenes.

Synthesis, structures, and luminescent properties of phenol-pyridyl boron complexes.

Syntheses of the four mixed phenol-pyridine derivatives 1,6-bis(2-hydroxyphenyl)pyridyl boron naphthalene (1), 1,6-bis(2-hydroxy-5-methylphenyl)pyridyl boron naphthalene (2), 1,6-bis(2-hydroxyphenyl)pyridyl boron 2-methoxylbenzene (3), and 1,6-bis(2-hydroxy-5-methylphenyl)pyridyl boron 2-methoxylbenzene (4) are reported. The structures of the boron compounds 1, 3, and 4 were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The molecular packing is characterized by intermolecular pi...pi and hydrogen-bonding interactions. DSC analysis demonstrates that 1 and 2 have good thermal stability with higher glass transition temperatures (Tg) and melting points (Tm) than 3 and 4. Boron complexes 1-4 display bright blue luminescence in solution and the solid state. White and blue electroluminescent (EL) devices were fabricated successfully using these boron compounds.

[Awareness on SARS and public health emergencies among general publics].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the awareness on sever acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and public health emergencies among general publics. METHODS: A cluster sampling method was implemented in Harbin and Jiagedaqi district of Daxinanling of Heilongjiang province. Research subjects were divided into three groups as city, township and rural areas and were given questionnaires to fill in. Data was analyzed with Epi-data and SPSS. RESULTS: 2003 available questionnaires were collected. The general publics well understood the knowledge on public health emergencies and the SARS with the whole recognition rate more than 60 percent. During the epidemics, people in city, town and countryside were calm (71.7%). The rates of attitude towards the government were significantly different among the subjects living with the city, town or rural areas. The city group expressed the highest favor to the government and media, 71.8% of them gave the credit on the control of SARS to the effective method taken by the government and 65.0% of them showed that they had enough confidence on the governmental ability of dealing with crises while the countryside group trusted the hospitals and relative specialists the most. CONCLUSION: It is essential for the government to interact and communicate with the publics through media, medical and related institutions when confronting with the public health emergencies. Publicity on health knowledge and coping system on emergency should play key roles in the development of an effective public health system while the government should lead the battle.

[The anti-respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) effect of Radix Glycyrrhizae in vitro].

OBJECTIVE: To develop safe and effective anti-RSV new medicine from Radix Glycyrrhizae. METHOD: The anti-RSV effect of Radix Glycyrrhizae in Hela cell culture was observed by means of the inhibition of cytopathic effect. RESULT: In Hela cell culture, Radix Glycyrrhizae was found to be a inhibitor of RSV in a concentration-dependent manner. The median toxic concentration (TC50) of Radix Glycyrrhizae was 3.43 g/L, the median effective concentration (EC50) of Radix glycyrrhizae against replication of the Long strain of RSV in Hela cells were 0.2535 g/L, the selectivity index (TI = TC50/EC50) is 13.53. In time of addition experiment, Radix Glycyrrhizae inhibited the effect of RSV in Hela cells when it was added at 0 h, 2 h, 4 h, 6 h, 8 h after virus infection. CONCLUSION: In Hela cell culture, Radix Glycyrrhizae was found to be a inhibitor of RSV, there are many ways in the mechanisms.
