Relationship between two-dimensional and three-dimensional bone architecture in predicting the mechanical strength of the pig mandible.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the relationship between two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) bone imaging parameters. STUDY DESIGN: Bone specimens were obtained from the mandibles of five male pigs weighing around 110 kg each. A total of 111 samples were measured two-dimensionally with using solid state digital intraoral radiography. Of these 111 samples, 43 were selected for 3D analysis and measured by microcomputed tomography. Through destructive mechanical testing, strength parameters were obtained. RESULTS: Correlations between the 2D and 3D parameters were rare; however, both 2D and 3D parameters separately showed significant correlations with strength. Multiple linear regression analyses using both 2D and 3D parameters together showed greater predictability than those using only 2D or only 3D parameters. CONCLUSION: Architectural parameters in 2D and 3D independently affect trabecular strength; the combination of the two can be used to improve bone strength predictability.

Quantitative analysis of errors in alveolar crest level caused by discrepant projection geometry in digital subtraction radiography: an in vivo study.

OBJECTIVE: This study compared the difference between 3 intraoral radiographic techniques on digital subtraction radiography (DSR) in vivo that are commonly used in a clinical setting. STUDY DESIGN: We evaluated and statistically analyzed the errors in the DSR image in 6 regions with 3 radiographic techniques: paralleling technique with a bite block attached to XCP, paralleling technique using XCP, and bisecting-angle technique. RESULTS: The amount of error using the bisecting-angle technique was too large for DSR, compared to that of the paralleling technique with a bite block attached to XCP. In the mandibular anterior region, the paralleling technique using XCP was not different from paralleling technique with a bite block attached to XCP. The lowest degree of error was present in the anterior region whereas the highest was present in the molar region. CONCLUSION: Bisecting-angle technique should be avoided, and paralleling technique using XCP can be used in the mandibular anterior region for DSR.

ROI-based image registration for digital subtraction radiography.

OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the influence of surrounding anatomical structures on the registration accuracy of a diagnostically important region, by varying the ROI (region of interest) window used in an automatic ROI-based digital subtraction method. STUDY DESIGN: Pairs of radiographs were taken at 2 molar regions using paralleling techniques of XCP devices (Rinn Co., Elgin, Ill) attached with and without a bite block. The global and local registration accuracies were measured by the RMS (root mean square) of subtraction images for various ROIs. RESULTS: No significant differences were found in global registration accuracies among various ROI sizes in all the paralleling techniques. The local registration accuracies decreased with extension of the ROI size. CONCLUSION: Registration using an ROI restricted to the anatomical region of diagnostic interest provides higher accuracy than using a larger ROI.

Automatic noise robust registration of radiographs for subtraction using strategic local correlation: an application to radiographs of dental implants.

Most of digital subtraction methods in dental radiography are based on registration using manual landmarks. We have developed an automatic registration method without using the manual selection of landmarks. By restricting a geometrical matching of images to a region of interest (ROI), we compare the cross-correlation coefficient only between the ROIs. The affine or perspective transform parameters satisfying maximum of cross-correlation between the local regions are searched iteratively by a fast searching strategy. The parameters are searched on the 14 scale image coarsely and then, the fine registration is performed on the original scale image. The developed method can match the images corrupted by Gaussian noise with the same accuracy for the images without any transform simulation. The registration accuracy of the perspective method shows a 17% improvement over the manual method. The application of the developed method to radiographs of dental implants provides an automatic noise robust registration with high accuracy in almost real time.

Comparison of ciliary wave disorders measured by image analysis and electron microscopy.

CONCLUSION: We have developed a simple, reliable method for the simultaneous determination of the ciliary wave disorder (CWD) and ciliary beat frequency (CBF) of actively beating cilia. OBJECTIVE: The CBF and the directions of beating cilia are two important components of mucociliary transport. Although lots of studies have been performed on the measurement of the CBF, there have been few studies on the direction of cilia, with the exception of those using electron microscopy (EM). EM takes too long to determine the directions of cilia, and it cannot determine the direction of actively beating cilia. The aim of this study was to develop an image analysis (IA) system to conveniently determine the wave directions of multiple actively beating cilia as well as the CBF. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sphenoid sinus mucosae obtained from 10 patients undergoing pituitary tumor removal via a trans-septal trans-sphenoidal approach were divided into two 4 x 4 mm2-sized pieces. One piece was studied using IA, the other with EM. Using IA, ciliary wave directions were determined from 5 20 x 20 microm2 regions of interest and the mean of 5 consecutive values was regarded as the CWD of each sample. The CBF was also measured. CWD was also measured using EM. RESULTS: The average number of cilia analyzed by EM was 102.50 (range 48-136). The mean CWDs determined using IA and EM were 28.25+/-4.84 degrees and 23.59+/-8.16 degrees, respectively. There was a significant correlation between the CWDs determined using these two methods (Spearman's correlation coefficient =0.648; p =0.043). The mean CBF of sphenoid mucosa was 10.50+/-2.20 Hz.

Development and evaluation of digital subtraction radiography computer program.

OBJECTIVE: We developed a new program for digital subtraction radiography (DSR) having useful functions to get the DSR image more accurately and efficiently. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of the DSR image acquired using the new program as compared with the ready-made program. STUDY DESIGN: Four observers performed the DSR process using our program and the ready-made program for digital intraoral radiographs taken from incisor, premolar, and molar regions. The statistical difference was evaluated between the programs, between the observers, and between the regions. RESULTS: The DSR image using our program was superior to that with the ready-made program in all the observers and all the radiographed regions. Also, there was the statistical difference among the observers, especially in our program. CONCLUSION: The DSR image using the new program was very accurate compared with ready-made program, so the program was useful to get an accurate DSR image.

Directional disorder of ciliary metachronal waves using two-dimensional correlation map.

The interrelationship of cilia and the order of wave directions are important factors that determine the effectiveness of cilia to transport materials in mucociliary systems of the respiratory tract. The interrelationship of cilia and the directional disorder of ciliary metachronal wave were analyzed using digital microscopic images. The degree of synchronization between ciliary beats was determined by the correlation factor between two different spots. To find out the uniphase directions of beating cilia, principal axes of inertia were applied to the two-dimensional correlation map calculated from sequential ciliary images. The standard deviation of determined wave directions in a region of interest (ROI) was defined as a measure of metachronal wave disorder. The pooled mean of metachronal wave disorder was 23.4 +/- 8.79 degrees in ROIs of 8 microm x 8 microm and 25.4 +/- 6.46 degrees in 32 microm x 24 microm from the sphenoid sinus mucosa of five normal subjects. Our result shows that there is a considerable variation in metachronal wave directions of cilia beating on the epithelium.
