Quantum size effects on the perpendicular upper critical field in ultrathin lead films.

We report the thickness-dependent (in terms of atomic layers) oscillation behavior of the perpendicular upper critical field Hc2perpendicular in the ultrathin lead films at the reduced temperature (t = T/Tc). Distinct oscillations of the normal-state resistivity as a function of film thickness have also been observed. Compared with the Tc oscillation, the Hc2perpendicular shows a considerable large oscillation amplitude and a pi phase shift. The oscillatory mean free path caused by the quantum size effect plays a role in Hc2perpendicular oscillation.

Do intradot electron-electron interactions induce dephasing?

We investigate the degree of coherence of electronic transport through a quantum dot (QD) in the presence of an intradot electron-electron interaction. By using an open multiterminal Aharonov-Bohm (AB) setup, we find that the intradot interaction does not induce any dephasing effect and the electron transport through the QD is fully coherent. We also observe that the asymmetric amplitude of the AB oscillation in the conductance through the two-terminal AB setup originates from the interplay between the confined structure and the electron-electron interaction. Thus, one cannot associate a dephasing process with this asymmetric amplitude, as has been done in previous studies.

Resonant spin Hall conductance in two-dimensional electron systems with a Rashba interaction in a perpendicular magnetic field.

We study transport properties of a two-dimensional electron system with Rashba spin-orbit coupling in a perpendicular magnetic field. The spin-orbit coupling competes with Zeeman splitting to introduce additional degeneracies between different Landau levels at certain magnetic fields. This degeneracy, if occurring at the Fermi level, gives rise to a resonant spin Hall conductance, whose height is divergent as 1/T and whose weight is divergent as -ln(T at low temperatures. The Hall conductance is unaffected by the Rashba coupling.

Spin current through a quantum dot in the presence of an oscillating magnetic field.

Nonequilibrium spin transport through an interacting quantum dot is analyzed. The coherent spin oscillations in the dot provide a generating source for spin current. In the interacting regime, the Kondo effect is influenced in a significant way by the presence of the processing magnetic field. In particular, when the precession frequency is tuned to resonance between spin-up and spin-down states of the dot, Kondo singularity for each spin splits into a superposition of two resonance peaks. The Kondo-type cotunneling contribution is manifested by a large enhancement of the pumped spin current in the strong coupling low temperature regime.

Radiation-induced "zero-resistance state" and the photon-assisted transport.

We demonstrate that the radiation-induced "zero-resistance state" observed in a two-dimensional electron gas is a result of the nontrivial structure of the density of states of the systems and the photon-assisted transport. A toy model of a quantum tunneling junction with oscillatory density of states in leads catches most of the important features of the experiments. We present a generalized Kubo-Greenwood conductivity formula for the photon-assisted transport in a general system and show essentially the same nature of the transport anomaly in a uniform system.

Surface phase transitions induced by electron mediated adatom-adatom interaction.

We propose that the indirect adatom-adatom interaction mediated by the conduction electrons of a metallic surface is responsible for the sqrt[3]xsqrt[3]<==>3x3 structural phase transitions observed in Sn/Ge (111) and Pb/Ge (111). When the indirect interaction overwhelms the local stress field imposed by the substrate registry, the system suffers a phonon instability, resulting in a structural phase transition in the adlayer. Our theory is capable of explaining all the salient features of the sqrt[3]xsqrt[3]<==>3x3 transitions observed in Sn/Ge (111) and Pb/Ge (111), and is in principle applicable to a wide class of systems whose surfaces are metallic before the transition.

Spin-dependent transport through an interacting quantum dot.

We study the nonequilibrium spin transport through a quantum dot coupled to the magnetic electrodes. A formula for the spin-dependent current is obtained and is applied to discuss the linear conductance and magnetoresistance in the interacting regime. We show that the Kondo resonance and the correlation-induced spin splitting of the dot levels may be systematically controlled by internal magnetization in the electrodes. As a result, when the electrodes are in parallel magnetic configuration, the linear conductance is characterized by two spin-resolved peaks. Furthermore, the presence of the spin-flip process in the dot splits the Kondo resonance into three peaks.

Droplet state and the compressibility anomaly in dilute 2D electron systems.

We investigate the space distribution of carrier density and the compressibility of two-dimensional (2D) electron systems by using the local density approximation. The strong correlation is simulated by the local exchange and correlation energies. A slowly varied disorder potential is applied to simulate the disorder effect. We show that the compressibility anomaly observed in 2D systems which accompanies the metal-insulator transition can be attributed to the formation of the droplet state due to a disorder effect at low carrier densities.

High spin systems with orbital degeneracy.

High-spin systems with orbital degeneracy are studied in the large spin limit. In the absence of Hund's coupling, the classical spin model is mapped onto disconnected orbital systems with spins up and down, respectively. The ground state of the isotropic model is an orbital valence bond state where each bond is an orbital singlet with parallel spins, and neighboring bonds interact antiferromagnetically. Possible relevance to the transition metal oxides is discussed.
