Observation of two new N* peaks in J/psi-->ppi-n and ppi+n decays.

The decay J/psi-->NNpi provides an effective isospin 1/2 filter for the piN system due to isospin conservation. Using 58x10(6) J/psi decays collected with the Beijing Electromagnetic Spectrometer at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider, more than 100 thousand J/psi-->ppi-n+c.c. events are obtained. Besides the two well-known N* peaks at around 1500 MeV/c2 and 1670 MeV/c2, there are two new, clear N* peaks in the ppi invariant mass spectrum around 1360 MeV/c2 and 2030 MeV/c2 with statistical significance of 11sigma and 13sigma, respectively. We identify these as the first direct observation of the N*(1440) peak and a long-sought missing N* peak above 2 GeV/c2 in the piN invariant mass spectrum.

Observation of a threshold enhancement in the plambda invariant-mass spectrum.

An enhancement near the m(p)+M(Lambda) mass threshold is observed in the combined pLambda and pLambda invariant-mass spectrum from J/psi-->pK(-)Lambda;+c.c. decays. It can be fit with an S-wave Breit-Wigner resonance with a mass m=2075+/-12(stat)+/-5(syst) MeV and a width of Gamma=90+/-35(stat)+/-9(syst) MeV; it can also be fit with a P-wave Breit-Wigner resonance. Evidence for a similar enhancement is also observed in psi(')-->pK(-)Lambda;+c.c. decays. The analysis is based on samples of 5.8x10(7)J/psi and 1.4x10(7)psi(') decays accumulated in the BES II detector at the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider.

Observation of the decay psi(2S)-->K0SK0L.

The decay psi(2S)-->K(0)(S)K(0)(L) is observed using psi(2S) data collected with the Beijing Spectrometer at the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider; the branching fraction is determined to be B(psi(2S)-->K(0)(S)K(0)(L))=(5.24+/-0.47+/-0.48)x10(-5). Compared with J/psi-->K(0)(S)K(0)(L), the psi(2S) branching fraction is enhanced relative to the prediction of the perturbative QCD "12%" rule. The result, together with the branching fractions of psi(2S) decays to other pseudoscalar meson pairs (pi(+)pi(-) and K+K-), is used to investigate the relative phase between the three-gluon and the one-photon annihilation amplitudes of psi(2S) decays.

Efficiency of preparative and process column distribution systems.

An analytical method for computing the residence time distribution of the liquid distribution system in chromatography columns is described. The impact of the distributor design on the separation efficiency is predicted as a function of media properties and packed bed dimensions. The efficiency loss due to the distributor when increasing column diameter during scale-up is quantified. It is shown that this loss can be compensated by modulating the local bed height via a moderate inclination of the bed support. It is concluded that the selection of an appropriate distributor design concept with optimised dimensions enables a scale-up of chromatographic separations without any significant loss of chromatographic efficiency due to the distribution system.

Observation of a near-threshold enhancement in the pp mass spectrum from radiative J/psi-->gammapp decays.

We observe a narrow enhancement near 2m(p) in the invariant mass spectrum of pp pairs from radiative J/psi-->gammapp decays. No similar structure is seen in J/psi-->pi(0)pp decays. The results are based on an analysis of a 58 x 10(6) event sample of J/psi decays accumulated with the BESII detector at the Beijing electron-positron collider. The enhancement can be fit with either an S- or P-wave Breit-Wigner resonance function. In the case of the S-wave fit, the peak mass is below 2m(p) at M=1859(+3)(-10) (stat)+5-25(syst) MeV/c(2) and the total width is Gamma<30 MeV/c(2) at the 90% confidence level. These mass and width values are not consistent with the properties of any known particle.

[Effect of puerarin on heart function and serum oxidized-LDL in the patients with chronic cardiac failure].

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of puerarin on heart function and serum oxidized-LDL(ox-LDL) in patients with chronic cardiac failure. METHODS: Seventy-eight patients with chronic cardiac failure were randomly divided into two groups, regular group (R) and regular + puerarin group (P). All patients in two groups received conventional treatment with inotropic agents, diuretic, and vasodilator, etc. The patients in the P group took puerarin 400 mg.d-1 for 10 days. RESULTS: After treatment, the clinical heart function of the patients in the two groups was improved, but there was no significant difference between them; the left ventricular ejection fraction (EF) of patients in the P group was higher than that in the R group(P < 0.05); and serum ox-LDL level was significantly decreased in the P group patients, but that was no change in the R group patients(P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Puerarin may improve the clinical heart function, increase the left ventricular ejection, meanwhile, it may decrease the level of ox-LDL.

Functional organization of climbing fibre projection to the cerebellar anterior lobe of the rat.

1. The input characteristics and distribution of climbing fibre field potentials evoked by electrical stimulation of various parts of the skin were investigated in the cerebellum of barbiturate anaesthetized rats. 2. Climbing fibre responses were recorded in sagittally oriented microelectrode tracks across the mediolateral width of the anterior lobe. Climbing fibres with similar response latencies and convergence patterns terminated in sagittal bands with widths of 0.5-1.5 mm. The principal organization of the anterior lobe with respect to input characteristics and locations of sagittal zones was similar to that in the cat and ferret. Hence, the sagittal bands in the rat were tentatively named the a, b, c1, c2 and d1 zones. 3. In contrast to the cat and ferret, the a zone of the rat was characterized by short latency ipsilateral climbing fibre input. Furthermore, it was divisible into a medial 'a1' zone with convergent, proximal input and a lateral 'ax' zone with somatotopically organized input. A forelimb area with similar location and input characteristics as the X zone of the cat was found, but it formed an integral part of the ax zone. A somatotopic organization of ipsilateral, short latency climbing fibre input was also found in the c1 zone. 4. Rostrally in the anterior lobe, climbing fibres activated at short latencies from the ipsilateral side of the body terminated in a somatotopically organized transverse band which extended from the midline to the lateral end of the anterior lobe. 5. The absence of the C3 and Y zones may be interpreted as a reflection of differences in the organization of the motor systems in the rat as compared with the cat. Skilled movements, which in the cat are controlled by the C1, C3 and Y zones via the anterior interposed nucleus, may in the rat be partly controlled by the ax zone via the rostrolateral part of the fastigial nucleus.

Developmental tuning in a spinal nociceptive system: effects of neonatal spinalization.

Recent studies indicate a modular organization of the nociceptive withdrawal reflex system. Each module has a characteristic receptive field, closely matching the withdrawal movement caused by its effector muscle. In the rat, the strength of the sensory input to each module is tuned during the first postnatal weeks, i.e., erroneous spinal connections are depressed, and adequate connections are strengthened. To clarify if this tuning is dependent on supraspinal structures, the effect of a complete neonatal spinal cord transection on the postnatal tuning of withdrawal reflexes was studied. The nociceptive receptive fields of single hindlimb muscles and compound withdrawal reflexes were examined in decerebrate unanesthetized and awake rats, respectively. Noxious thermal CO(2) laser stimulation was used to evoke reflex responses. Neonatal spinal cord transection resulted in a disrupted reflex organization in the adult rat, resembling that previously found in neonatal rats. The receptive fields of single hindlimb muscles exhibited abnormal distribution of sensitivity not matching the withdrawal action of the effector muscles. Likewise, the composite nocifensive movements, as documented in the awake rat, often resulted in erroneous movements toward the stimulus. It is concluded that withdrawal reflexes do not become functionally adapted in rats spinalized at birth. These findings suggest a critical role for supraspinal systems in the postnatal tuning of spinal nociceptive systems.

[Investigation of antigen reaction of placental blood vessel in pregnancy-induced hypertension].

The antigen reactions of factor VIII (FVIII), IgA, IgG, IgM and C'3 of the endothelium and basilar membrane of placental vessels in 31 cases with pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) using immunocytochemical technique were studied. The results showed a decrease or absence of FVIII in the endothelium of the blood vessel. The antigens of IgA, IgG, IgM and C'3 were limited within the endothelium and basilar membrane of the placental blood vessels and overreacted. The immunological mechanism in PIH was discussed.

[Characteristics of clinical pathology and changes of liver function in blood stasis syndrome in liver diseases].

The experimental study on 30 patients of the Blood Stasis Syndrome of liver diseases was discussed in this paper. Two characteristics were found. One was the pathological feature which manifested as follows: (1) DIAGNOSIS: the Blood Stasis Syndrome of liver disease was mainly diagnosed in the chronic active hepatitis and the early stage of cirrhosis of liver, while that of non-Blood Stasis was mainly observed in the chronic persistent hepatitis (P less than 0.01); (2) Pathological change: The histological changes such as piecemeal necrosis, bridging necrosis, the destruction of limiting plate, eosinophilic change, etc. It was more obvious in the Blood Stasis group than that with non-Blood Stasis Syndrome (P less than 0.01), (3) The manifestation of Blood Stasis Syndrome was not in parallel with the severity of the liver disease. The another characteristic was the changes of liver function, which expressed more markedly in the Blood Stasis group with higher level of SGPT, lower ratio of A/G and increased globulin, they were more obvious than that in non-Blood Stasis group (P less than 0.01).
