[Pathological features of atrial isomerism and its diagnosis by computed tomography].

OBJECTIVE: To study the diagnostic significance of computed tomography (CT) in atrial isomerism. METHOD: In one of the 2 cases of left atrial isomerism, abdominal CT scan with and without contrast enhancement were both performed, the other had plain thoraco-abdominal CT scan, and another case of right atrial isomerism received thoraco-abdominal contrast enhanced scan and thin-slice scan of the trachea. The diagnoses of all the 3 cases were surgically and pathologically confirmed. RESULT: In the CT images of the 2 cases of left atrial isomerism, some typical features were identified including bilaterally symmetric bronchi, levoversion of the heart, horizontally positioned liver, absence of hepatic segment of the inferior vena cava and dilated azygos, short pancreas and double spleen, and mirror image isomerism of the major arteries and abdominal organs. The case of right atrial isomerism had bilateral upper lobe tracheal bronchus, mirror image isomerism of the heart and abdominal organs, short pancreas, translocation of the inferior vena cava to the left of the abdominal aorta, both of which were on the left of the spine. CONCLUSIONS: CT have distinct diagnostic value in revealing thoraco-abdominal organs and major vessels, which can be crucial in the diagnosis and surgical management of patients with atrial isomerism.

[Effect of earthworm inoculation on soil carbon and nitrogen dynamics and on crop yield with application of corn residues].

This study was carried out in the Experimental Station of Nanjing Agricultural University, which is in a subtropical monsoon region characterized by a warm-wet spring and a hot-dry summer. The annual average temperature, precipitation and evaporation are 15.6 degrees C, 1010 mm and 1560 mm, respectively. In 1999, the experimental plots (2.8 m x 1.0 m x 0.6 m) were established by concrete frame. Soil in the plots was orthic aquisols collected from Rugao County, Jiangsu Province. Crop rotation was upland rice and winter wheat. At the beginning of the first crop (rice) season, earthworms (Pheretima sp.) were inoculated at a density of 10.m-2 and 20.m-2, respectively, in the plots with an application of corn residues at the rate of 1500 g.m-2(750 g.m-2 in the following seasons). The responses of soil carbon and nitrogen and crop yield to earthworm activity were investigated from 1999 to 2001. The results showed that earthworms had no significant influences on total soil carbon and nitrogen content, which implied that there was no depletion of soil carbon and nitrogen pools in the presence of earthworms. The maintenance of soil carbon might be explained by low assimilation efficiency of organic matter by earthworms, and by the compensation of carbon returning from plant production enhancement. Soil mineral nitrogen, soil microbial biomass carbon and microbial biomass nitrogen were increased, and nitrogen mineralization was strengthened by earthworm activities, which was more obvious at jointing/booting and heading stages. In comparison with no-worm treatments, the yield of rice wheat increased by 9.3% and 5.1%, respectively, in the treatments inoculated with earthworms. It was concluded that earthworm was very important in promoting nitrogen recycling of crop residues and plant productivity, and in keeping the balance of soil carbon pool as well.

Hepatocyte transplantation: state of the art and strategies for overcoming existing hurdles.

Over three decades of research in experimental animals and several clinical trials have brought us to the threshold of hepatocyte transplantation for the treatment of acute and chronic liver failure, and inherited metabolic disorders. However, more extensive clinical studies and routine clinical application are hampered by the shortage of good quality of donor cells. To overcome these hurdles, current research has focused on the search for alternatives to adult primary hepatocytes, such as liver cell progenitors, fetal hepatoblasts, embryonic, bone marrow or umbilical cord blood stem cells and conditionally immortalized hepatocytes. Cross-species hepatocyte transplantation is also being explored. It is hoped that ongoing research will permit the application of hepatocyte transplantation to the treatment of a wide array of liver diseases.
