Effect of pre-covered oxygen on the dehydrogenation reactions over copper surface: a density functional theory study.

Dehydrogenation of five species including CH3OH, CH3O, H2COO, NH3, and H2O over clean and oxygen-modified copper surfaces has been investigated by the first-principle density functional calculations within the generalized gradient approximation. The reaction enthalpies and the activation energies have been calculated for 10 elementary steps corresponding to the direct and oxygen-assisted cleavage of X-H bonds (X = O, N, C). The DFT-GGA results showed that the pre-adsorbed oxygen always facilitates the dehydrogenation reaction by decreasing the reaction enthalpies and the activation energies. The obtained results are in general agreement with experimental observations.

Three new Cu(II) and Cd(II) complexes with 3-(2-pyridyl)pyrazole-based ligand: syntheses, crystal structures, and evaluations for bioactivities.

Three new complexes [Cu(L)(2)(NO(3))](NO(3))(H(2)O)(1/2)(CH(3)OH)(1/2) (1), [Cd(L)(2)(NO(3))(2)](H(2)O)(3) (2) and [Cd(L)(2)(ClO(4))(CH(3)OH)](ClO(4))(H(2)O)(1/4)(CH(3)OH) (3) (L=1-[3-(2-pyridyl)pyrazol-1-ylmethyl]naphthalene) were synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, IR and X-ray diffraction analysis. Among them, the Cu(II) and Cd(II) ions were both coordinated by four N donors from two distinct L ligands via N,N-bidentate chelating coordination mode. Additional weak interactions, such as the face-to-face pi-pi stacking and C-Hcdots, three dots, centeredO H-bonding interactions, linked the mononuclear unit into 1D chain and further into 2D network. Complexes 1-3 were subjected to biological assays in vitro against six different cancer cell lines. All of them exhibited cytotoxic specificity and notable cancer cell inhibitory rate. The interactions of 1-3 with calf thymus DNA were investigated by thermal denaturation, viscosity measurements, spectrophotometric and electrophoresis methods. The results indicate that these complexes bound to DNA by intercalation mode via the ligand L and had different nuclease activities, which were in good agreement with their DNA-binding strength. Moreover, the central metal ions of 1-3 played a vital role in DNA-binding behaviors, DNA-cleavage activities and cytotoxicities, whereas the contribution of the different counter anions to their bioactivities also should not be ignored.

Silver(I) complexes in coordination supramolecular system with bulky acridine-based ligands: syntheses, crystal structures, and theoretical investigations on C-H...Ag close interaction.

In our efforts to investigate the coordination architectures of transition metals and organic ligands with tailored structures, we have prepared two structurally related rigid bulky acridine-based ligands, 9-[3-(2-pyridyl)pyrazol-1-yl]- acridine (L(1)) and 9-(1-imidazolyl)acridine (L2), and synthesized and characterized four of their Ag(I) complexes, {[AgL1](ClO4)}2 (1), {[AgL1](NO3)}2 (2), [AgL2(2)](ClO4) (3), and {[(Ag3L2(3))(NO3)](NO3)2(H2O)}(infinity) (4). The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis shows that the structures of 1 and 2 are similar to each other, with the two intramolecular Ag(I) centers of each complex being encircled by two L1 ligands; this forms a unique boxlike cyclic dimer, which is further linked to form one-dimensional (1D) chains of 1 and a two-dimensional (2D) network of 2 by intermolecular face-to-face pi...pi stacking and/or weak C-H...O hydrogen-bonding interactions, respectively. 3 has a mononuclear structure, which is further assembled into a 2D network via intermolecular Ag...O and pi...pi stacking weak interactions. 4 possesses two different 1D motifs that are further interlinked through interlayer face-to-face pi...pi stacking and Ag...O weak interactions, resulting in a 2D network. It is worth noting that one of the interesting structural features of 1, 2, and 4 is the presence of obvious C-H...M hydrogen-bonding interactions between the Ag centers and some acridine ring H atoms identified by X-ray diffraction on the basis of the van der Waals radii. Furthermore, as a representative example, full geometry optimization on the basis of the experimental structure, the natural bond orbital (NBO), and topological analysis of 1 were carried out by DFT and AIM (Atoms in Molecules) calculations. The total C-H...Ag interaction energy in 1 is estimated to be about 14 kJ/mol. Therefore, this work offers three new rare examples (1, 2, and 4) that exhibit C-H...Ag weak interactions, in which the N donors of the acridine rings coordinate to Ag(I) ions. Also, these results strongly support the existence of C-H...Ag close interactions and allow us to have a better understanding of the nature of such interactions in the coordination supramolecular systems.

Synthesis and characterization of silver(I) coordination networks bearing flexible thioethers: anion versus ligand dominated structures.

This report describes the synthesis and X-ray characterization of a series of L(n)AgX complexes wherein Ln = PhS(CH2)nSPh (n = 2, 4, 6, 10) and X = CF3SO3-, CF3COO-, CF3CF2COO-, CF3CF2CF2COO-, NO3-, and ClO4-. This study was undertaken in order to rationalize the structure of the coordination networks formed as a function of the anion coordinating strength and the ligand structure. The following complexes were examined: with L(2), CF3SO3- (1), CF3COO- (2), ClO4- (3); L4, CF3SO3- (4), CF3COO- (5), CF3CF2COO- (6), CF3CF2CF2COO- (7); L6, CF3COO-.H2O (8), CF3CF2COO- (9), CF3CF2CF2COO- (10); and L10, NO3- (11). The anions selected are classified in three groups of increasing coordinating strength: perchlorates, fluorosulfonates, and perfluorocarboxylates. Except in two cases, all complexes form 2D-coordination networks. The 2D-network in 1 (L2, CF3SO3-) is made up of Ag(I) and L2, while the anion is only a terminal co-ligand that completes the trigonal coordination around Ag(I). In 4 (L4, CF3SO3-), a 1D-coordination polymer, [Ag-L4-]infinity, is observed where the anions are coordinated to Ag(I) in a trigonal fashion. The perfluorocarboxylates form tetrameric units in a zigzag shape, but only with the L4 ligand. In these (6 and 7), the silver-silver distances are very short, especially those of the central bond, indicating the presence of weak Ag-Ag interactions. Dimers, with short silver-silver distances, are observed with ligands L2 and L6 and perfluorocarboxylates. In 8 (L6, CF3COO-.H2O), a 3D channel-like structure is built through water molecules that connect adjacent layers. An unusual stoichiometry is noted in 3 (L2, ClO4-, acetone); Ag:L is 4:2.5. In 11 (L10 and NO3-), the nitrate acts as a bidentate ligand and an [Ag-NO3-]infinity chain is formed. Adjacent chains are linked by the L10 ligands into a 2D-coordination network.

Syntheses, crystal structures, and magneto-structural correlations of novel Cu(II) complexes containing a planar [Cu(mu-L1)]2 (HL1 = 3-(2-pyridyl)pyrazole) unit: from dinuclear to tetranuclear and then to one-dimensional compounds.

Seven new Cu(II) complexes based on a binuclear planar unit [Cu(mu-L(1))](2), [[Cu(mu-L(1))(NO(3))(H(2)O)](2) (1), [Cu(mu-L(1))(HL(1))(ClO(4))](2) (2), [Cu(4)(mu-L(1))(6)(NO(3))(2)] (3), [Cu(4)(mu-L(1))(6)(L(1))(2)] (4), [Cu(4)(mu-L(1))(6)(mu-L(2))](n) (5), [Cu(4)(mu-L(1))(6)(mu-L(3))](n) (6), [[Cu(4)(mu-L(1))(4)(mu-L(4))(2)](H(2)O)(3)](n) (7) (HL(1) = 3-(2-pyridyl)pyrazole, L(2) = 1,8-naphthalenedicarboxylate, L(3) = terephthalate, L(4) = 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylate)}, have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, and X-ray diffraction. In 1 and 2, the Cu(II) centers are linked by deprotonated pyrazolyl groups to form dinuclear structures. 3 and 4 have similar gridlike tetranuclear structures in which two additional deprotonated L(1) ligands bridge two [Cu(mu-L(1))](2) units perpendicularly. 5 and 6 consist of similar one-dimensional (1-D) chains in which gridlike tetranuclear copper(II) units similar to that of 3 are further linked by L(2) or L(3) ligands, respectively. And, in 7, L(4) ligands link [Cu(mu-L(1))](2) binuclear units to form a tetranuclear gridlike structure in chelating/bridging mode and simultaneously bridge the tetranuclear units to form a 1-D chain. The magnetic properties of all complexes were studied by variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility and magnetization measurements. The obtained parameters of J range from -33.1 to -211 cm(-1), indicating very strong antiferromagnetic coupling between Cu(II) ions. The main factor that affects the |J| parameter is the geometry of the Cu(N(2))(2)Cu entity. From the magnetic point of view, 1 and 2 feature "pure" dinuclear, 3 and 5 tetranuclear, and 4, 6, and 7 pseudodinuclear moieties.

Synthesis, structures, and magnetic properties of the copper(II), cobalt(II), and manganese(II) complexes with 9-acridinecarboxylate and 4-quinolinecarboxylate ligands.

To explore the relationships between the structures of ligands and their complexes, we have synthesized and characterized a series of metal complexes with two structurally related ligands, 9-acridinecarboxylic acid (HL(1)) and 4-quinolinecarboxylate acid (HL(2)), [Cu(2)(mu(2)-OMe)(2)(L(1))(2)(H(2)O)(0.69)](n) 1, [Cu(2)(L(1))(4)(CH(3)OH)(2)] 2, [Cu(3)(L(1))(6)(CH(3)OH)(6)].3H(2)O 3, [Mn(3)(L(1))(6)(CH(3)OH)(6)].3H(2)O 4, [Co(3)(L(1))(6)(CH(3)OH)(6)].3H(2)O 5, [Cu(L(2))(2)](n) 6, [Mn(L(2))(2)(H(2)O)](n) 7, and [Co(L(2))(2)(H(2)O)](n) 8. 1 is a three-dimensional (3D) polymer with an interpenetrating NbO type network showing one-dimensional (1D) channels, whereas 2 and 3 take bi- and trinuclear structures, respectively, because of the differences in basicity of the reaction systems in preparing the three complexes. 4 and 5 have trinuclear structures similar to that of 3. In 1-5, ligand L(1) performs different coordination modes with N,O-bridging in 1 and O,O'-bridging in 2-5, and the metal ions also show different coordination geometries: square planar in 1, square pyramidal in 2, and octahedral in 3-5. 6 has a two-dimensional structure containing (4,4) grids in which L(2) adopts the N,O-bridging mode and the Cu(II) center takes square planar geometry. 7 and 8 are isostructural complexes showing 1D chain structures, with L(2) adopting the O,O-bridging mode. In addition, the intermolecular O-H...N hydrogen bonds and pi-pi stacking interactions further extend the complexes (except 1 and 6), forming 3D structures. The magnetic properties of 2-7 have been investigated and discussed in detail.

Novel dithioether-silver(I) coordination architectures: structural diversities by varying the spacers and terminal groups of ligands.

An investigation into the dependence of the framework formation of coordination architectures on ligand spacers and terminal groups was reported based on the self-assembly of AgClO4 and eight structurally related flexible dithioether ligands, RS(CH2)nSR (Lan, R = ethyl group; Lbn, R = benzyl group, n= 1-4). Eight novel metal-organic architectures, [Ag(La1)3/2ClO4]n (1a), [Ag2(La2)2(ClO4)2]2 (2a), [AgLa3ClO4]n (3a), {[Ag(La4)2]ClO4}n (4a), [AgLb1ClO4]2 (1b), [Ag(Lb2)2]ClO4 (2b), {[Ag(Lb3)3/2(ClO4)1/2](ClO4)1/2}n (3b) and [Ag(Lb4)3/2ClO4]n(4b), were synthesized and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. Structure diversities were observed for these complexes: 1a forms a 2-D (6,3) net, while 2a is a discrete tetranuclear complex, in which the AgI ion adopts linear and tetrahedral coordination modes, and the S donors in each ligand show monodentate terminal and mu2-S bridging coordination fashions; 3a has a chiral helical chain structure in which two homo-chiral right-handed single helical chains (Ag-La3-)n are bound together through mu2-S donors, and simultaneously gives rise to left-handed helical entity (Ag-S-)n. In 4a, left- and right-handed helical chains formed by the ligands bridging AgI centers are further linked alternately by single-bridging ligands to form a non-chiral 2-D framework. 1b has a dinuclear structure showing obvious ligand-sustained Ag-Ag interaction, while 2b is a mononuclear complex; 3b is a 3-D framework formed by ClO4- linking the 2-D (6,3) framework, which is similar to that of 1a, and 4b has a single, double-bridging chain structure in which 14-membered dinuclear ring units formed through two ligands bridging two AgI ions are further linked by single-bridging ligands. In addition, a systematic structural comparison of these complexes and other reported AgClO4 complexes of analogous dithioether ligands indicates that the ligand spacers and terminal groups take essential roles on the framework formation of the AgI complexes, and this present feasible ways for adjusting the structures of such complexes by modifying the ligand spacers and terminal groups.

Synthesis, crystal structure, cytotoxic activity and DNA-binding properties of the copper (II) and zinc (II) complexes with 1-[3-(2-pyridyl)pyrazol-1-ylmethyl]naphthalene.

A new ligand L, 1-[3-(2-pyridyl)pyrazol-1-ylmethyl]naphthalene, and its two metal complexes, [Cu(L)3](ClO4)2 (1) and [Zn(L)3](ClO4)2(H2O)2 (2), have been synthesized and characterized. The crystal structure of complex 1 was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction, which crystallized in monoclinic, space group P2(1)/n with unit cell parameters, a = 12.710(4) angstroms, b = 12.135(3) angstroms, c = 33.450(9) angstroms, beta = 93.281(5) degrees and Z = 4. The Cu atom was six-coordinated to N(1), N(2), N(4), N(5), N(7) and N(8) from three L ligands and formed a slightly distorted octahedral geometry. Complexes 1 and 2, and ligand L were subjected to biological tests in vitro using three different cancer cell lines (HL-60, BGC-823 and MDA-MB-435). Complex 1 showed significant cytotoxic activity against three cancer cell lines. The interactions of complexes 1 and 2, and ligand L with calf thymus DNA were then investigated by thermal denaturation, viscosity measurements and spectrophotometric methods. The experimental results indicated that complexes 1 and 2 bound to DNA by intercalative mode via the ligand L. The intrinsic binding constants of complexes 1 and 2, and ligand L with DNA were 1.8 x 10(4), 5.4 x 10(3) and 2.76 x 10(3) M(-1), respectively.

All the five complexes take the similar eclipsed 2D open-channel framework with different guest molecules included in the cavities of their channels. TGA analysis indicates that the eclipsed open-channel frameworks are thermally stable up to 300 degrees C. The porous property of the 2D framework of 5 was also investigated by the XRPD technique, which indicated that the guest molecules included in the open-channel frameworks are removable and the framework is maintained after the removal of the guest molecules. Moreover, complexes 1-5 also display strong blue emission in the solid state.

Ligand design for alkali-metal-templated self-assembly of unique high-nuclearity CuII aggregates with diverse coordination cage units: crystal structures and properties.

The construction of two unique, high-nuclearity Cu(II) supramolecular aggregates with tetrahedral or octahedral cage units, [(mu(3)-Cl)[Li subset Cu(4)(mu-L(1))(3)](3)](ClO(4))(8)(H(2)O)(4.5) (1) and [[Na(2) subset Cu(12)(mu-L(2))(8)(mu-Cl)(4)](ClO(4))(8)(H(2)O)(10)(H(3)O(+))(2)](infinity) (2) by alkali-metal-templated (Li(+) or Na(+)) self-assembly, was achieved by the use of two newly designed carboxylic-functionalized diazamesocyclic ligands, N,N'-bis(3-propionyloxy)-1,4-diazacycloheptane (H(2)L(1)) or 1,5-diazacyclooctane-N,N'-diacetate acid (H(2)L(2)). Complex 1 crystallizes in the trigonal R3c space group (a = b = 20.866(3), c = 126.26(4) A and Z = 12), and 2 in the triclinic P1 space group (a = 13.632(4), b = 14.754(4), c = 19.517(6) A, alpha = 99.836(6), beta = 95.793(5), gamma = 116.124(5) degrees and Z = 1). By subtle variation of the ligand structures and the alkali-metal templates, different polymeric motifs were obtained: a dodecanuclear architecture 1 consisting of three Cu(4) tetrahedral cage units with a Li(+) template, and a supramolecular chain 2 consisting of two crystallographically nonequivalent octahedral Cu(6) polyhedra with a Na(+) template. The effects of ligand functionality and alkali metal template ions on the self-assembly processes of both coordination supramolecular aggregates, and their magnetic behaviors are discussed in detail.

Novel Cd(II) coordination polymers with flexible disulfoxide ligands: effects of ligand spacers, terminal groups and counter anions on the complex framework formations.

Five novel Cd(II) coordination polymers with three structurally related flexible disulfoxide ligands, [[Cd(L1)3](ClO4)2]n (1), [[Cd(L2)3](ClO4)2(CHCl3)]n (2), [Cd(L2)(NO3)2(H2O)]n (3), [Cd2(L3)2(NO3)4]n (4) and [[Cd(L3)3](ClO4)2]n (5), where L1= 1,3-bis(phenylsulfinyl)propane, L2= 1,4-bis(phenylsulfinyl)butane and L3= 1,4-bis(ethylsulfinyl)butane, were synthesized and structurally determined by X-ray diffraction. Complex 1 has a 2D layer structure, in which part of the L1 ligands bridge the Cd(II) ions to form double-bridging chains and the other part of ligands link such chains to form a 2D framework. Complexes 2 and 5 are isomorphous, showing unusual 2D (3,6) network structures containing triangular grids. Complex 3 adopts a 2D (4,4) network formed by L2 linking the NO3- bridged (Cd-O-N-O-)n 1D zigzag chains. By contrast, is a 1D chain, in which two Cd(II) centers are bridged by mu2-O of sulfoxide groups to form a dinuclear unit, and L3 ligands link such dinuclear units to form a 1D double-bridging chain. The structural differences among such complexes show that the ligand nature and counter anions have important influences on the complex structures, which may provide a rational method for controlling the framework formation in metal-organic coordination polymers.

Reaction of L(1) and Cd(ClO(4))(2).6H(2)O or Co(ClO(4))(2).6H(2)O, in the presence of NH(4)SCN, yielded another 3-D open framework, [[CdL(1)(NCS)(2)](CH(3)OH)(1.5)](n) (4) [monoclinic, space group C2/c, a = 28.408(10) A, b = 9.997(5) A, c = 7.358(4) A, beta = 99.013(8) degrees, Z = 4], or a 2-D network, [[Co(L(1)())(2)(NCS)(2)](H(2)O)(2.5)](n) (5) [orthorhombic, space group Pnna, a = 22.210(5) A, b = 12.899(3) A, c = 20.232(4) A, Z = 4]. When L(1) was replaced by L(3) to react with Co(ClO(4))(2).6H(2)O and NH(4)SCN, another 2-D coordination polymer, [Co(L(3))(2)(NCS)(2)](n) (6) [monoclinic, space group P2(1)/c, a = 8.120(3) A, b = 9.829(4) A, c = 17.453(6) A, beta = 103.307(6) degrees, Z = 2], was constructed. These results indicate that the nature of the ligands, metal centers, or counteranions plays the critical role in construction of these novel coordination polymers. The interesting porous natures of two 3-D open frameworks 3 and 4 were investigated by TGA and XPRD techniques, and the magnetic properties of the Cu(II) and Co(II) complexes were studied by variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility and magnetization measurements.
