Relationship between microscanned image quality and fill factor of detectors.

Microscanning is an important technique in high-resolution electro-optical imaging. It can increase the resolution and improve the performance of imaging systems. For optimum design of a staring imaging system with microscanning modes it is necessary to choose the optimum microscanning mode according to the fill factor of the detector. Hence it is important to study the effect of the fill factor on the microscanning image quality. With some assumptions, we introduce the sampling-averaging modulation transfer function of a detector array at the spatial Nyquist frequency with which to study quantitatively the improvement in image quality of various microscanning modes for selected fill factors (1, 2/3, and 1/2). Analytical results show that the amount of improvement is closely associated with the fill factor. Finally, typical sampling imaging of focal plane arrays with these fill factors are simulated. Experimental results qualitatively describe the effect of the fill factor on the microscanning image and show good agreement with theoretical analysis.

Fingerprint quality control of Tianjihuang by high-performance liquid chromatography-photodiode array detection.

A novel, simple and accurate fingerprint method was developed using high-performance liquid chromatography-photodiode array detection (HPLC-DAD) for the quality control of Hypericum japonicum thunb (Tianjihuang), a Chinese herbal medicine used for the treatment of several bacterial diseases, infectious hepatitis, gastrointestinal disorder, internal hemorrhage and tumors. For the first time, the feasibility and advantages of employing chromatographic fingerprint were investigated and demonstrated for the evaluation of Tianjihuang by systematically comparing chromatograms with a professional analytical software recommended by State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA). Our results revealed that the chromatographic fingerprint combining similarity evaluation could efficiently identify and distinguish raw herbs of Tianjihuang from different sources. The effects resulted from collecting locations, harvesting time and storage time on herbal chromatographic fingerprints were also examined.

Equation-based triangle orientation discrimination sensor performance model based on sampling effects.

An equation-based triangle orientation discrimination (TOD) performance model was first developed to focus on staring thermal imagers. Specifically, the spatial spectra distribution of a standard triangle pattern is determined. The modulation effects of the overall components of the system on a nonperiodic standard triangle pattern are analyzed and modeled. The matched filter idea is used to characterize quantitatively the spatiotemporal integration of the eye and brain to signal, aliasing, and various noise components over a triangle pattern area, and the perceived signal-to-noise ratio of the staring thermal imager is derived. Further, the TOD performance theoretical model is established. Comparison with the experimental results shows that this theoretical model gives a reasonable prediction of the TOD performance curve for staring thermal imagers. Although more tests and modifications are required, these preliminary results suggest that this model can be developed into a model that predicts the TOD for a wide range of sensors.
