A coherent state approach to semiclassical nonadiabatic dynamics.

A semiclassical (SC) approximation to the quantum mechanical propagator for nonadiabatic systems is derived. Our derivation starts with an exact path integral expression that uses canonical coherent states for the nuclear degrees of freedom and spin coherent states for the electronic degrees of freedom. A stationary path approximation (SPA) is then applied to the path integral to obtain the SC approximation. The SPA results in complex classical trajectories of both nuclear and electronic degrees of freedom and a double ended boundary condition. The root search problem is solved using the previously proposed "real trajectory local search" algorithm. The SC approximation is tested on three simple one dimensional two-state systems proposed by Tully [J. Chem. Phys. 93, 1061 (1990)], and the SC results are compared to Ehrenfest and surface hopping predictions. Excellent agreement with quantum results is reached when the SC trajectory is far away from caustics. We discuss the origin of caustics in this SC formalism and the strengths and weaknesses of this approach.

Rotational spectrum, potential energy surface, and bound states of the weakly bound complex He-N2O.

Pure rotational transitions of the weakly bound complex He-N(2)O and three minor isotopomers (He-(14)N(15)NO, He-(15)N(14)NO, and He-(15)N(15)NO) were measured in the frequency region from 6 to 20 GHz. Predictions for the microwave transition frequencies were based on the infrared work by Tang and McKellar [J. Chem. Phys. 117, 2586 (2002)]. In the case of (14)N containing isotopomers, nuclear quadrupole hyperfine structure of the rotational transitions was observed and analyzed. The resulting spectroscopic parameters were used to determine geometrical and dynamical information about the complex. An ab initio potential energy surface was calculated at the coupled cluster level of theory with single and double excitations and perturbative inclusion of triple excitations. This surface was constructed using the augmented correlation consistent polarized valence triple zeta basis set for all atoms with the inclusion of bond functions for the van der Waals bond. Bound state calculations were done to determine the energies of low-lying rovibrational levels that are supported by the potential energy surface. The resulting transition energies agree with the experimental values to 1% or better.

Path integral Monte Carlo approach for weakly bound van der Waals complexes with rotations: algorithm and benchmark calculations.

A path integral Monte Carlo technique suitable for the treatment of doped helium clusters with inclusion of the rotational degrees of freedom of the dopant is introduced. The extrapolation of the results to the limit of infinite Trotter number is discussed in detail. Benchmark calculations for small weakly bound (4)He(N)--OCS clusters are presented. The Monte Carlo results are compared with those of basis set calculations for the He--OCS dimer. A technique to analyze the orientational imaginary time correlation function is suggested. It allows one to obtain information regarding the effective rotational constant for a doped helium cluster based on a model for the rotational Hamiltonian. The renormalization of the effective rotational constant for (4)He(N)--OCS clusters derived from the orientational imaginary time correlation function is in good agreement with experimental results.
