Activation of atmospheric nitrogen and azobenzene N=N bond cleavage by a transient Nb(III) complex.

Atmospheric N2 is activated by two transient Nb(III) "(PNP)NbCl2" (PNP- = N[2-P(CHMe2)2-4-methylphenyl]2) fragments to form the bridging diimido [(PNP)NbCl2]2(mu-N2) (1). Complex 1 can also be independently synthesized from Nb(IV) and Nb(V) precursors via one-electron and transmetalation reactions, respectively. In the presence of azobenzene, the transient Nb(III) intermediate, prepared from Li(PNP) and NbCl3(DME) (DME = dimethoxyethane) under Ar, cleaves the N=N bond via a metal-ligand cooperative four-electron reduction to form niobium imide and phosphoranimine functionalities. Structural studies are presented and discussed for various Nb systems bearing the pincer-type framework PNP as well as the N2 and azobenzene activated products. Theoretical studies addressing the Nb-N2-Nb core in 1 are also presented.

cis,cis-[(bpy)2RuVO]2O4+ catalyzes water oxidation formally via in situ generation of radicaloid RuIV-O*.

The mechanism of the catalytic oxidation of water by cis,cis-[(bpy)(2)Ru(OH(2))](2)O(4+) to give molecular dioxygen was investigated using Density Functional Theory (DFT). A series of four oxidation and four deprotonation events generate the catalytically competent species cis,cis-[(bpy)(2)Ru(V)O](2)O(4+), which breaks the H-OH bond homolytically at the rate determining transition state to give a hydroperoxo intermediate. Our calculations predict a rate determining activation barrier of 25.9 kcal/mol in solution phase, which is in reasonable agreement with the previously reported experimental estimate of 18.7-23.3 kcal/mol. A number of plausible coupling schemes of the two metal sites including strong coupling, weak ferromagnetic and weak antiferromagnetic coupling have been considered. In addition, both high-spin and low-spin states at each of the Ru(V)-d(3) centers were explored and we found that the high-spin states play an important mechanistic role. Our calculations suggest that cis,cis-[(bpy)(2)Ru(V)O](2)O(4+) performs formally an intramolecular ligand-to-metal charge transfer when reacting with water to formally give a cis,cis-[(bpy)(2)Ru(IV)O*](2)O(4+) complex. We propose that the key characteristic of the diruthenium catalyst that allows it to accomplish the most difficult first two oxidations of the overall four-electron redox reaction is directly associated with this in situ generation of two radicaloid oxo moieties that promote the water splitting reaction. A proton coupled metal-to-metal charge transfer follows to yield a Ru(V)/Ru(III) peroxo/aqua mixed valence complex, which performs the third redox reaction to give the superoxo/aqua complex. Finally, intersystem crossing to a ferromagnetically coupled Ru(IV)/Ru(III) superoxo/aqua species is predicted, which will then promote the last redox event to release triplet dioxygen as the final product. A number of key features of the computed mechanism are explored in detail to derive a conceptual understanding of the catalytic mechanism.

Switch control for piecewise affine chaotic systems.

Switch control can be imposed naturally on the piecewise affine system, where the control action switches from an affine subsystem to another according to switch conditions depending on the system states. In this paper we present such piecewise feedback control for stabilizing unstable equilibrium points of piecewise affine systems. The noise effect on the stabilization is also investigated. The original Chua's circuit is used to illustrate our results.

The abnormal apoptosis of T cell subsets and possible involvement of IL-10 in systemic lupus erythematosus.

To study the apoptosis of lymphocyte subpopulations in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients and the possible role of IL-10 in this apoptosis involved in the pathogenesis of SLE, three color fluorescence and flow cytometry were used to investigate the early apoptosis of lymphocyte subsets from freshly separated or cultured peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). ELISA was employed to detect the levels of IL-10 in serum and the levels of sFas and sFasL in cultured PBMC supernatants, and the results of sFas and sFasL were confirmed by real-time PCR of Fas and FasL mRNA. The results showed that in cells from SLE patients, the apoptosis of CD3+, CD4+, and CD8+ T cells was distinctly increased, and the percentage of CD4+ cells and the CD4/CD8 ratio was significantly decreased, as compared with normal controls. The apoptosis of T lymphocytes cultured with SLE serum was markedly higher than that of cells cultured with control's serum. Blockade of interleukin-10 (IL-10) activation by an anti-IL-10 antibody reduced the SLE serum induced apoptosis of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells. The levels of sFas and sFasL in the culture supernatant and Fas and FasL mRNA expressions in cultured cells were significantly higher in the SLE serum-cultured groups, but decreased evidently in the presence of the anti-IL-10 antibody. Above findings suggested that SLE cells showed abnormally high apoptosis of T lymphocytes, especially of the CD4+ subpopulation, resulting in a decreased CD4/CD8 ratio. The high percentage of apoptotic T cells in SLE patients may be related to the high levels of IL-10 in SLE serum, as IL-10 may induce the abnormally activated T cells to trigger apoptosis via the Fas-FasL pathway.

[(tBu2PCH2SiMe2)2N]RuCH3: the origin of extremely facile, double H-C(sp3) activation generating a "hydrido-carbene" complex.

The four-coordinate compound [(tBu2PCH2SiMe2)2N]RuCH3 undergoes rapid double H-C(sp3) activation at -78 degrees C to generate a "hydrido-carbene" complex. DFT calculations suggest that the origin of the low barrier to methane elimination is an alpha-agostic interaction in the low-lying singlet state of the highly unsaturated (PNP)RuMe. The hydrido-carbene complex can be viewed as a "masked" resting state of the four-coordinate cyclometalated alkyl complex, [(tBu2PCH2SiMe2)N(Me2SiCH2P(tBu)(C(CH3)2CH2)]Ru, where hydride migration from metal to carbon occurs before any subsequent reactivity.

A facile approach to a d4 RuN: moiety.

Replacement of chloride in (PNP)RuCl, PNP = (tBu2PCH2SiMe2)2N, by Me3SiN3 gives a pre-redox adduct that, already at -30 degrees C, releases N2 to produce the mononuclear nonplanar Ru(IV) nitride (PNP)RuN, characterized by spectroscopic and X-ray methods. DFT calculations show the planar structure to be only 1.6 kcal/mol less stable, which explains the time-averaged simplicity of the 1H NMR spectrum, as well as the large vibrational amplitude of the nitride ligand.

Impulsive stabilization and synchronization of a class of chaotic delay systems.

The problems of control and synchronization of a class of chaotic systems with time delay via the impulsive control approach are investigated. Based on the Lyapunov-like stability theory for impulsive functional differential equations, several sufficient conditions are derived to guarantee chaos control and synchronization. Furthermore, we address the chaos quasisynchronization in the presence of single-parameter mismatch. Several illustrated examples are also given to show the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

Electronic structure of the water-oxidation catalyst [(bpy)2(OHx)RuORu(OHy)(bpy)2]z+: weak coupling between the metal centers is preferred over strong coupling.

High-level DFT calculations indicate that the singlet ground state of the water-oxidizing blue Ru dimer [(bpy)2(OH2)RuIIIORuIII(OH2)(bpy)2]4+ is not due to a strong coupling of the excess electrons from each of the low-spin d5 RuIII centers across the Ru-O-Ru moiety, as has been assumed to date. Instead, broken symmetry orbital calculations suggest that a weak antiferromagnetically (AF) coupled singlet state is energetically more favorable by 10-35 kcal/mol. Experimentally observed redox potentials can only be reproduced if antiferromagnetic coupling is invoked.
