The simultaneous separation and determination of chloropropanols in soy sauce and other flavoring with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in negative chemical and electron impact ionization modes.

Both gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in electron ionization (GC-MS-EI) and negative chemical ionization (GC-MS-NCI) modes are reported in this paper for the simultaneous determination of 1,3-dichloropropan-2-ol (1,3-DCP), 2,3-dichloropropan-1-ol (2,3-DCP), 3-chloropropane-1,2-diol (3-MCPD) and 2-chloropropane-1,3-diol (2-MCPD) in soy sauce and other flavoring. D(5)-3-MCPD (for 3-MCPD and 2-MCPD) and d(5)-1,3-DCP (for 1,3-DCP and 2,3-DCP) were used as the deuterium isotopic labelled internal standards. The feasibility of using heptafluorobutyric anhydride modified with triethylamine (HFBA-Et(3)N) as a new derivatization reagent to replace heptafluorobutyrylimidazole (HFBI) is proposed. Liquid/liquid extraction with hexane was introduced for high lipid content samples. A small survey was carried out of soy sauces (103 samples) and instant noodles (45 samples) and the applicability of GC-MS-NCI and GC-MS-EI was assessed in these different matrices.

Integration of interdisciplinary guidelines with clinical applications: Current and future scenarios.

Intermountain Healthcare (Intermountain) has developed a referential free-text interdisciplinary document collection to define standards for patient care. In order to improve access and use in bedside clinician workflow, Intermountain converted the document collection into a ubiquitous web-compatible format. The content has been structured using XML so it can be utilized by Intermountain's existing clinical applications, as well as positioning it for use in future deployed applications. It has become evident the strategy of structuring the content in this web-compatible format will support its use to drive current and future system functionality. As Intermountain moves forward in creating and deploying clinical applications, it is important to maintain and improve the current collection structure, sustaining the efficient integration and use of the content necessary to support clinician workflow and to meet information needs.

Understanding nurses' information needs and searching behaviour in acute care settings.

UNLABELLED: We report the results of a pilot study designed to describe nurses' information needs and searching behaviour in acute care settings. Several studies have indicated that nurses have unmet information needs while delivering care to patients. AIM: Identify the information needs of nurses in acute care settings. METHODS: Nurses at three hospitals were asked to use an information retrieval tool (CPG Viewer). A detailed log of their interactions with the tool was generated. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that nurses' information needs are different from what is reported in the literature in terms of physicians' information needs. Questions regarding a nursing procedure or protocol were the most common needs nurses had.

Infrared study on solvent-solute interactions of 2-acetylthiophene in binary mixtures.

The infrared absorption spectra of the carbonyl stretching vibrations of 2-acetylthiophene (AcTh) have been investigated in cyclo-hexane/alcohol mixtures (C6(12/C2H5OH; (6H12/n-C4H9OH; C6H12/i-C3H7OH and C6H12/t-C5H11OH). Five types of carbonyl stretching vibration bands for AcTh are found with the change of the mole fraction of the aprotic solvent C6H12 (x(C6H12)) in binary solvent mixtures. The dependencies of the frequencies of carbonyl stretching vibrations (nu(C=O)) on x(C6H12) allow a distinction and assignment of all species resulting from the solvent-solute interactions. Linear correlations between the nu(C=O) of each species and x(C6H12) are found. The influence on the transformation of some species caused by the self association of alcohols is discussed.

Solvent effects on infrared spectra of 2-acetylthiophene in organic solvents.

Infrared spectroscopy studies of 2-acetylthiophene (ACTH) in 18 different organic solvents, both polar and non-polar, were undertaken to investigate the solvent-solute interactions. The frequencies of carbonyl stretching vibration upsilon(C=O) of ACTH were correlated with the properties such as the solvent acceptor number (AN) and the linear solvation energy relationships (LSER). The solvent-induced stretching vibration frequency shifts showed a better correlation with the LSER than the AN. A six-membered ring-like hydrogen bonding structure was presented and the solvent effects of ACTH in alcohol solvents were investigated in detail.

Collaborative practice: usability of text-based, electronic patient care guidelines.

The Intermountain Healthcare system has developed a text-based, electronic reference system for nonphysician staff to provide patient care guidelines intended to reduce variability in bedside care processes and improve patient outcomes. Implementation issues with two interface tools used to deploy the electronic documents at the bedside have caused difficulty with document accessibility. A third interface tool (Viewer) was designed to solve the accessibility problems. This study was designed to compare the time spent searching for information and success of information retrieval from all three interfaces before clinical deployment of the Viewer interface. Study results were used by nursing leadership in a decision to continue supporting the electronic dissemination of text-based practice guidelines for nonphysician staff within our health system's acute care settings.
