Synergism of C5N six-membered ring and vapor-liquid-solid growth of CN(x) nanotubes with pyridine precursor.

A series of bamboo-like CN(x)() nanotubes have been synthesized from pyridine precursor by chemical vapor deposition with bimetallic Fe-Co/gamma-Al(2)O(3) catalyst in the range of 550 approximately 950 degrees C. An unusual predomination of pyridinic nitrogen over graphitic nitrogen has been observed for the CN(x)() nanotubes with reaction temperature below 750 degrees C. The pyridinic nitrogen decreases and the graphitic nitrogen increases with rising reaction temperature. A synergism mechanism of C(5)N-six-membered-ring-based growth through surface diffusion and vapor-liquid-solid growth through bulk diffusion was accordingly deduced and schematically presented. This mechanism could not only explain our own experimental results, but also understand the CN(x)()-nanotube-related experimental phenomena in the literature, as well as be in accordance with the basic principle of diffusion kinetics. A promising route to the challenging topic for synthesizing regularly arranged C(5)N or high-N-content CN(x)() nanotubes has also been suggested.

Synthesis and characterization of a new family of spin bearing TTF ligands.

The syntheses and characterization of two new tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) derivatives bearing pyridine-based substituents and 1,5'-dimethyl-6-oxoverdazyl radicals are described. The TTF-pyridine and bipyridine aldehydes were prepared via a palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction between mono(tributylstannyl)tetrathiafulvalene (3) and the appropriate formylpyridyl halides (4). The radical precursors, the corresponding 1,2,4,5-tetrazanes, were prepared by condensation of the bis(1-methylhydrazide) of carbonic acid with the TTF bearing pyridyl aldehyde. Oxidation of tetrazanes 8 and 9 with 1,4-benzoquinone afforded the donor radicals 1 and 2 as 1:1 complexes with hydroquinone. Both complexes are stable in the solid state and their electronic properties have been characterized by EPR, cyclic voltammetry, and UV/vis spectroscopy. The TTF core of both compounds was oxidized both chemically and electrochemically to afford the corresponding cation diradical species. The electronic properties of both donor radicals have been probed by cyclic voltammetry, UV-vis spectroscopy, and preliminary EPR measurements.

Intramedullary spinal tuberculoma: report of three cases.

BACKGROUND: Intramedullary spinal tuberculoma is a rare form of central nervous system tuberculosis. This article describes the successful management of intramedullary spinal tuberculoma in 3 patients who received treatment between 2000 and 2003. CASE DESCRIPTION: The character of 3 cases was analyzed retrospectively, including clinical manifestation and magnetic resonance imaging findings. All masses were excised totally under microscope. Histopathologic examination revealed tuberculoma. Postoperatively, all patients received a 6 to 9 month course of ATT. The outcome was favorable. CONCLUSIONS: The intramedullary spinal tuberculoma must be considered in the differential diagnosis of the spinal cord compression in patients with a history of tuberculosis. When confronted with a progressing neurologic deficit and poor response to ATT, surgical intervention should be considered. The optimal treatment is a combination of microsurgical resection and ATT.

New skeletal 3D polymeric inorganic cluster [W4S16Cu16Cl16]n with Cu in mixed-valence states: solid-state synthesis, crystal structure, and third-order nonlinear optical properties.

A new 3D polymeric inorganic cluster with Cu in mixed-valence states was synthesized by the solid-state reaction of (NH4)2WS4, S8, CuCl, and Et4NCl; S8 may be regarded as the oxidizing agent converting Cu(I) to Cu(II) and causing the polymerization of [WS4]2-. The third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties are determined, and the results show that the cluster exhibits both large NLO absorptive and strong refractive behaviors.

From XML to RDF: how semantic web technologies will change the design of 'omic' standards.

With the ongoing rapid increase in both volume and diversity of 'omic' data (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and others), the development and adoption of data standards is of paramount importance to realize the promise of systems biology. A recent trend in data standard development has been to use extensible markup language (XML) as the preferred mechanism to define data representations. But as illustrated here with a few examples from proteomics data, the syntactic and document-centric XML cannot achieve the level of interoperability required by the highly dynamic and integrated bioinformatics applications. In the present article, we discuss why semantic web technologies, as recommended by the World Wide Web consortium (W3C), expand current data standard technology for biological data representation and management.
