Chiral magnetic metal-organic frameworks of dimetal subunits: magnetism tuning by mixed-metal compositions of the solid solutions.

The isostructural, chiral molecular magnetic materials with the formula [MxM'(2-x)(ca)2(1,4-dimb)]n [H2ca = D-(+)-camphoric acid, 1,4-dimb = 1,4-di-(1-imidazolyl-methyl)-benzene, M = Ni(II), M' = CoII, 0 < or = x < or = 2] consist of ca-bridged (4,4) layers with [M2(O2CR)4] as secondary building units that are pillared by the 1,4-dimb ligands into a unique 3D framework. The high-spin octahedral symmetry and the proportions of the mixed-metal ions were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy. The compounds exhibit the onset of antiferromagnetic ordering at 7.5 approximately 23 K, as well as weak ferromagnetism, spin-flop, and glassy behavior that result from the randomness of the mixed-metal pairs, magnetic anisotropy of the metallic cations, and antisymmetric exchange. The composites should be regarded as molecular alloys of the pure Ni(II) and Co(II) compounds. The magnetic behavior of the solid solutions shows unambiguously that the organic bridges, bond angles, and bond distances greatly influence the effective interactions and bring about cooperative magnetic behavior in the chiral 3D frameworks.

Synthesis, crystal structure, magnetic property and oxidative DNA cleavage activity of an octanuclear copper(II) complex showing water-perchlorate helical network.

A new octanuclear copper(II) complex has been synthesized and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography: [Cu(8)(HL)(4)(OH)(4)(H(2)O)(2)(ClO(4))(2)].(ClO(4))(2).2H(2)O (1) (H(3)L=2,6-bis(hydroxyethyliminoethyl)-4-methyl phenol). The complex is formed by the linkage of two terminal bimetallic cationic units and a tetranuclear mu(3)-hydroxo bridged dicubane core by a very short intramolecular hydrogen bond (O-H...O, 1.48(3)A and the angle 175 degrees). The coordination sphere of the terminal copper atoms is square pyramidal, the apical positions being occupied by water and a perchlorate ion. Complex 1 self-assembles to form a new type of water-perchlorate helical network [(H(2)O)(2)(ClO(4))](infinity) involving oxygen atoms of coordinated perchlorate ion and the two lattice water molecules through hydrogen-bonding interaction. The variable temperature-dependent susceptibility measurement (2-300K) of 1 reveals a strong antiferromagnetic coupling, J(1)=-220cm(-1) and J(2)=-98cm(-1) (J(1) and J(2) representing the exchange constant within [Cu(2+)](4) and [Cu(2+)](2) units, respectively). The complex binds to double-stranded supercoiled plasmid DNA giving a K(app) value of 1.2x10(7)M(-1) and displays efficient oxidative cleavage of supercoiled DNA in the presence of H(2)O(2) following a hydroxyl radical pathway.

2D LnIII RuIII 2 compounds constructed from trans-[Ru(acac)2(CN)2]-. Syntheses, structures, and magnetic properties.

A series of cyano-bridged Ln(III)Ru(III)2 coordination polymers, Ph4P{Ln(NO3)2[Ru(acac)2(CN)2]2} [Ln = Tb (1), Dy (2), Er (3), Gd (4); Hacac = acetylacetone] have been synthesized by the reaction of Ln(NO3)3 with trans-Ph4P[Ru(acac)2(CN)2] in methanol. X-ray crystallographic determination reveals that these compounds are isostructural and have a wavy (4,4) layer structure with the Ln3+ ions bridged by trans-[Ru(acac)2(CN)2]-. Magnetic studies shows that the magnetic coupling between the Ln(III) and Ru(III) ions through the cyano bridges in 1-4 is negligibly weak.

Two three-dimensional metal-organic frameworks containing one-dimensional hydroxyl/carboxylate mixed bridged metal chains: syntheses, crystal structures, and magnetic properties.

Two novel three-dimensional complexes formulated as [M(3)(bime)2(mu3-OH)2(HO-BDC)2]n (M = Co, 1; Cu, 2) [bime = 1,2-bis(imidazol-1'-yl)ethane, HO-H2BDC = 5-hydroxyisophthalic acid] have been hydrothermally synthesized and characterized. Both 1 and 2 exhibit similar structural frameworks resulting from one-dimensional metal/oxygen chains extended by HO-BDC, but the bridging modes of HO-BDC and coordination environments of metal centers are different. Complexes 1 and 2 crystallize in the orthorhombic system, space group Pbcn, a = 18.458(2) [18.2119(12) for 2] Angstroms, b = 12.0616(14) [11.6847(7)] Angstroms, c = 11.4859(14) [12.0688(6)] Angstroms, and Z = 4 (4). Magnetic studies show that 1 displays a slow magnetic relaxation, a large hysteresis, and distinct finite-size effects and 2 contains an antiferromagnetic chain.

Solvent-tuned azido-bridged Co2+ layers: square, honeycomb, and Kagomé.

Three azido-bridged Co2+ complexes with square, honeycomb, and Kagomé layered structures were synthesized and structurally characterized. Crystallization solvents are found to be critical in generating the observed topologies. These structurally related complexes are of significance in studying two-dimensional antiferromagnetism and geometric frustration.

Formate--the analogue of azide: structural and magnetic properties of M(HCOO)2(4,4'-bpy).nH2O (M = Mn, Co, Ni; n = 0, 5).

Reaction of transition metal formate M(HCOO)(2).2H2O (M = Mn, Co, Ni) with 4,4'-bpy (4,4-bipyridine) has led to four new compounds with the formula M(HCOO)2(4,4'-bpy).nH2O (M = Mn, Co (1.Mn, 2.Co), n = 0; M = Co, Ni (3.Co, 4.Ni), n = 5). Compounds 1.Mn and 2.Co are isomorphous and crystallized in the tetragonal crystal system with the chiral space group P4(1)2(1)2. They are of three-dimensional diamondoid structure connected by anti-anti formate with 4,4'-bpy in the cavities of the framework reinforcing the intermetallic connections; the diamond-like net was observed also in their azide analogue (Mn(N3)2(4,4'-bpy)). Compounds 3.Co and 4.Ni are isomorphous also but crystallized in the monoclinic crystal system with the space group Cc. Both structures are uninterpenetrated 3D "CdSO4" type with big channels, constructed by anti-anti formate and 4,4'-bpy. This type of net was not observed in their azide analogue. Residing in the channels, water molecules form a new type of 1D tape constructed by vertex-sharing cyclic pentamers. Magnetic measurements were performed on all of these four compounds. 1.Mn and 2.Co are weak ferromagnets with the critical temperature Tc = 5.3 and 7.4 K, respectively. 3.Co is an antiferromagnet with Neel temperature TN = 3.0 K, and 4.Ni is a weak ferromagnet below 20 K. Hysteresis loop can be observed for 2.Co and 4.Ni at 1.8 K. As an analogue of azide, formate can be used to construct molecular architectures, which structurally and magnetically have great similarities to and also differences from those of azide. This offers a promising method for the design of new molecular architectures with formate.

New route to the mixed valence semiquinone-catecholate based mononuclear FeIII and catecholate based dinuclear MnIII complexes: first experimental evidence of valence tautomerism in an iron complex.

The semiquinone-catecholate based mixed valence complex, [FeIII(bispicen)(Cl4Cat)(Cl4SQ)] x DMF (1), and catecholate based (H2bispictn)[Mn2III(Cl4Cat)4(DMF)2] (2) (bispicen = N,N'-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)-1,2-ethanediamine, bispictn = N,N'-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)-1,3-propanediamine, Cl4Cat = tetrachlorocatecholate dianion, and Cl4SQ = tetrachlorosemiquinone radical anion) were synthesized directly utilizing a facile route. Both the complexes have been characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction study. The electronic structures have been elucidated by UV-vis-NIR absorption spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, EPR, and magnetic properties. The structural as well as spectroscopic features support the mixed valence tetrachlorosemiquinone-tetrachlorocatecholate charge distribution in 1. The ligand based mixed valence state was further confirmed by the presence of an intervalence charge transfer (IVCT) band in the 1900 nm region both in solution and in the solid. The intramolecular electron transfer, a phenomenon known as valence tautomerism (VT), has been followed by electronic absorption spectroscopy. For 1, the isomeric form [FeIII(bispicen)(Cl4Cat)(Cl4SQ)] is favored at low temperature, while at an elevated temperature, the [FeII(bispicen)(Cl4SQ)2] redox isomer dominates. Infrared as well as UV-vis-NIR spectral characterization for 2 suggest that the MnIII(Cat)2- moiety is admixed with its mixed valence semiquinone-catecholate isomer MnII(SQ)(Cat)-, and the electronic absorption spectrum is dominated by the mixed charged species. The origin of the intervalence charge transfer band in the 1900 nm range is associated with the mixed valence form, MnII(Cl4Cat)(Cl4SQ)-. The observation of VT in complex 1 is the first example where a mixed valence semiquinone-catecholate iron(III) complex undergoes intramolecular electron transfer similar to manganese and cobalt complexes.

Perovskite-like Metal Formates with Weak Ferromagnetism and as Precursors to Amorphous Materials.

Three isomorphous compounds M(CHOO)3[NH2(CH3)2] (M = Mn(1 x Mn), Co(2 x Co), Ni(3 x Ni)) have been synthesized in solvothermal conditions. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction shows that they are all crystallized in the trigonal space group R c with small differences in the lattice parameters. Bridged by the three-atom single-bridge CHOO-, M ions form a three-dimensional distorted perovskite-like structure with dimethylamine (DMA) cations located in the cages of the network. Based on the magnetic data, these three 3D compounds are weak ferromagnets with the critical temperature Tc = 8.5 K (1 x Mn), 14.9 K (2 x Co), and 35.6 K (3 x Ni), and for 2 x Co and 3 x Ni, spin reorientation might take place at 13.1 and 14.3 K, respectively. At 1.8 K, hysteresis loops can be observed for all three compounds with the coercivity field ca. 90 Oe (1 x Mn), 920 Oe (2 x Co), and 320 Oe (3 x Ni). The canting angles are estimated to be 0.08 degrees, 0.5 degrees, and 0.6 degrees for 1 x Mn, 2 x Co, and 3.Ni, respectively. The magnetic coupling between MnII ions in 1.Mn was estimated based on the model developed by Rushbrook and Wood for a Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a simple cubic lattice and the best fit gives J = -0.23 cm(-1). At the same time, according to molecular field theory of antiferromagnetism, the J values for compounds 1 x Mn, 2 x Co, and 3 x Ni were estimated to be -0.32 cm(-1), -2.3 cm(-1), and -4.85 cm(-1), respectively. The spin cant in these compounds may originate from the noncentrosymmetric character of the three-atom single-bridge CHOO-. Furthermore, amorphous materials 4 x Mn238, 5 x Mn450, 6 x Co320, and 7 x Ni300 were prepared from precursors 1-3 under an argon atmosphere at different temperatures according to the thermogravimetric analyses. As an interesting result, 5 x Mn450 was confirmed to be an amorphous form of Mn3O4 with a considerably large coercivity field HC = 4.1 kOe at 30 K compared to that value (250 Oe) for bulk Mn3O4.
