[Influence of different convergence angles on the retention of cast metal post and core].

Fifty-four simulated tooth roots made of polymethacrylate (PMMA) were divided into six groups according to the root canal convergence angles of 0 degrees, 3.93 degrees, 5.71 degrees, 7.48 degrees, 11.31 degrees, 14.71 degrees. Cast post and cores were manufactured and cemented with Zinc phosphate cement (ZP). The retention capacities of the posts were tested. The bonding strength of ZP at different convergence angles were tested with some casted wafers, and linear regression was made. So the effect of interlocking and the proportion could be calculated. With these results, we made some curvilinear regressions. The results showed that the retention of cast post declined and the bonding strength of ZP fell with the increase of convergence angles. There were significant differences in the bonding strength and retention among groups, P<0.05. The experiment indicates that the dentists should reduce the convergence angles of posts as much as possible to obtain greater retention.

[The effects of remain of residual tooth on retention of post-core crown system].

This study was aimed to assess the effects of remain of residual tooth on the retention of postpost-core was made, casted and cemented. The post-core was tested at the speed of 10 mm/min on the Instron4302, and the retention force was recorded. Other samples were made and subjected to the test for cohesion of polymethylmethacrylate and metal. The result showed that retention significantly increased with the adding of the residual tooth. When the length of post was longer than 8 mm and 1 mm was added to tooth remain, the difference in retention between the two groups was statistically significant. It was noted that there existed relationships of retention to length of post and tooth remain, of cohesion to length of post and tooth remain, and of frictiion resistence to length of post and tooth remain; moreover, the relevant linear regression equations were obtained. So during the tooth preparation of post-core system, the tooth tissue should be reserved as much as possible.

Morphological variation of the thoracolumbar vertebrae in Macropodidae and its functional relevance.

The present study was designed to investigate how the form of the marsupial thoracolumbar vertebrae varies to cope with the particular demands of diverse loading and locomotor behaviors. The vertebral columns of 10 species of Macropodidae, with various body masses and modes of locomotion, together with two other arboreal marsupials, koala and cuscus, were selected. Seventy-four three-dimensional landmark coordinates were acquired on each of the 10 last presacral vertebrae of the 70 vertebral columns. The interspecific variations of the third lumbar vertebra (L3, which approximates the mean) and the transitional patterns of the thoracolumbar segments were examined using the combined approach of generalized Procrustes analysis (GPA) and principal components analysis (PCA). The results of analyses of an individual vertebra (L3) and of the transitional patterns indicate significant interspecific differences. In the L3 study the first PC shows allometric shape variation, while the second PC seems to relate to adaptation for terrestrial versus arboreal locomotion. When the L3 vertebrae of the common spotted cuscus and koala are included for comparison, the vertebra of the tree kangaroo occupies an intermediate position between the hopping kangaroo and these arboreal marsupials. The L3 vertebrae in the arboreal marsupials possess a distinct dorsoventrally expanded vertebral body, and perpendicularly orientated spinous and transverse processes. The results of the present study suggest that vertebral shape in the kangaroo and wallaroos provides a structural adaptation to hopping through a relatively enlarged loading area and powerful lever system. In contrast, the small-sized bettongs (or rat kangaroos) have a relatively flexible column and elongated levers for the action of back muscles that extend and laterally flex the spine. The complex pattern of vertebral shape transition in the last 10 presacral vertebrae was examined using PCAs that compare between species information about vertebral shape variation along the thoracolumbar column. The results reinforce and emphasize important aspects of the patterns of variation seen in the detailed analysis of the third lumbar vertebra. The results also imply that size, spinal loading pattern, and locomotor behavior exert an influence on shaping the vertebra. Further, the morphological adaptations are consistent within these marsupials and this opens up the possibility that this kind of analysis may be useful in making functional inferences from fossil material.

[An experimental study on human bitemarks digital analysis and its accuracy].

This experiment was designed to study the method of human bitemarks digital analysis and its accuracy. The human bitemarks were made on the dog skin by human dentition. The related parameters of human bitemarks and suspects criminal dentitions were digitally recorded and managed. The digital picture of human bitemark was obtained, and the dental study model, bite in wax and bitemark on pig skin of suspected criminal were scanned. The overlay was prepared with Adobe Photoshop 5. 5 and the parameters were measured with AutoCAD R14, then their matches were compared. The result shows that the human bitemarks digital analysis is a more accurate approach to human bitemarks identification. Three methods for collecting evidence dental study model, bite in wax and bitemark on pig skin all can be used as aids in forensic sciences. Dental study model is the most accurate one of all the three methods mentioned above.

Histochemical and contractile properties of striated muscles of urethra and levator ani of dogs and sheep.

AIMS: To understand their possible importance in long- and short-term control of continence, some properties of the striated muscles of the urethra and pelvic floor (levator ani) of dogs and sheep were investigated, especially fiber types and contractile characteristics. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Striated muscles of urethra and levator ani of 29 male and 6 female dogs and 11 male and 6 female sheep were removed and cut into strips. Some strips were frozen and stained for ATPase at pH 9.4 and 4.3 for fiber typing; others were set up in an organ bath to study contractile responses to nerve stimulation. RESULTS: All muscles contained both type I (slow) and type II fibers, ranging from 97% type II in female greyhound urethra to 60% in female sheep levator ani. For each muscle, there were fewer type II muscles in sheep than in dog. The diameters of the urethral fibers were about 60% of the levator ani in dogs and 34% in sheep. Contraction of the urethral muscle was faster than for levator ani and declined to about 80% of the peak, 500 msec after the beginning of stimulation at 20 Hz. The levator ani contraction rose to a steady level as long as stimulation continued. CONCLUSIONS: Both the levator ani and urethral striated muscles contain slow and fast fiber types. The levator ani muscles are capable of sustained contraction with rapid onset which will produce long-term closure of the urethra. The circular urethral muscle contraction was faster but less well maintained.

[A biomechanical study on the morphological changing process of human bitemarks].

This is a biomechanical research in the morphological changing process of human bitemarks on the skin of dogs. The human bitemarks were made on the live and dead dogs by different tooth and occlusal force. The changing process of the bitemarks were recorded for a long time and its related morphological parameters were measured. Then multiple stepwise regression analysis was made to disclose the relationship of the shape of the bitemarks to occlusal force, time, and tooth area, tooth width and thickness. The mathematic relationship of the morphological changing process of the bitemark with occlusal force, time and tooth shape was established.

[A comparative study on experimental and mathematical analysis of mechanical properties of PFM].

In this study we compare the experimental and mathematical analyses of mechanical properties of PFM and analyze their correlation levels and inner links. Fifteen PFM specimens with different thickness ratio of metal to porcelain are made , with the shape of 26mm x 4mm x 1.5mm, and are divided into 5 groups, the metal thickness increases with 0.05mm change each among every group from 0.25mm to 0.45mm, the porcelain thickness decreases accordingly. The three-point-fracture test is used to measure their bending strength and elastic modulus, exhibit their changing laws, and disclose their inner relationships. When the whole thickness of the specimen is determined, the fracture load, bending strength and elastic modulus increase according to the increase of the metal thickness. The experimental mechanical properties of PFM are significantly influenced by the thickness ratio of metal to porcelain, and are the same as the theoretical ones calculated by the mixed law formula of compound material. There is significant correlation between the experimental analysis and mathematical analysis of mechanical properties of PFM. The regression coefficients can be obtained to describe this relationship. Further more, they can be used as the corrected parameters of the theoretical formula. The corrected mathematical formula is helpful to predicting and improving the mechanical properties of PFM.

[Effects of tensile strain and loading time on the shape and cytoskeleton of the human periodontal ligament fibroblast measured by confocal laser scanning microscopy and immunity fluorescence technique].

UNLABELLED: The periodontal ligament fibroblast (PDLF) was cultivated artificially as the cell to be tested, and then it was loaded with mechanical stress-strain of different values and for different times. The cell and nucleus projected areas and shapes as well as the structure of cytoskeleton were tested by use of confocal laser scanning microscope and immunity fluorescence technique. Then the relationship among the stress-strain, the time, the shape and the structure of cytoskeleton of the PDLF was detected. RESULTS: In the trial groups of 0, 8%, 12%, 16% strain values, the cell and nucleus projected areas were proportional to strain (stress) and time. The diameter, density and order of the structure of cytoskeleton increased in the strain and time dependent fashion. In the trial group of 20% strain values, the cell and nucleus projected areas decreased with the increase of time, and the structure of cytoskeleton became disorderly. It was demonstrated in this study that the shape and structure of cytoskeleton of PDLF underwent regular changes when the PDLF was loaded with the mechanical stress-strain.

[Changes of dynorphinA1-13 on the treatment of hypoxic-ischemic brain injury by the brain-derived neurotrophic factor in neonatal rats].

OBJECTIVE: To explore changes and role of dynorphinA(1 - 13) on the experimental treatment of hypoxic-ischemic brain injury (HIBI) by intracerebral transplantation of genetically modified myoblasts expressing and secreting brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in neonatal rats. METHODS: Seven-day-old Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into HIBI + BDNF group (A), HIBI + BDNF + U50, 488H group (B), HIBI group (C) and sham-operated group (D). Pups were intracerebroparenchymally transplanted with either genetically modified myoblasts producing and secreting BDNF (A, B) or their parent cells (C) at 0.8 microl (4 x 10(4)/microl) followed by a cerebroventricular microinjection of opioid kappa receptor agonist U50, 488H (0.5 microg, B) or vehicles (A, C) shortly after HIBI undergone by a permanent ligation of left common carotid artery followed by a 2.5 h inhalation of humidified 8%O(2) + 92%N(2) at 37 degrees C. Water contents of the brain, levels of malondiadehye (MDA) and cell apoptosis were investigated 1 d after the procedure. Contents of dynorphinA(1 - 13)-like immunoreactivity (ir-DynA(1 - 13)) at the left and right cortex and hippocampus were tested by radioimmunoassay 0, 1, 3 d postinjury. RESULTS: Levels of ir-DynA(1 - 13) in left cortex were markedly increased in group A, B or C when compared to group D different times after the procedure and markedly decreased in group A or B vs group C 1, 3 d after the procedure. Levels of ir-DynA(1 - 13) in left hippocampus were also markedly increased in group A, B and C (0 d), B, C (1 d) and C (3 d) when compared to group D and markedly decreased in group A (1 d) and B (3 d) vs group C, respectively. Water contents, MDA levels and percentage of cell apoptosis were significantly higher in group A, B or C than those in group D and these parameters were obviously lowered in group A compared to group C in the left brain 1 d after the procedure. There were no significant differences of water contents and levels of MDA between group B and C but significantly lowered percentage of cell apoptosis in group B was seen when compared to group C in the left brain. CONCLUSION: It is suggested that dynorphinA(1 - 13) participates in the pathophysiological process of HIBI. One of the pathways of the beneficial effects of intracerebral transplantation of genetically modified myoblasts producing BDNF on HIBI lies on the inhibition of the function of dynorphin A(1 - 13) through the binding of kappa opioid receptor.

[Study on the status of oral pharyngeal carriage of Haemophilus influenzae in healthy preschool children in Fuzhou city].

OBJECTIVE: To study the status of oral pharyngeal carriage and characteristics of Haemophilus influenzae (Hi) in healthy preschool children in Fuzhou. METHODS: Six hundred and three healthy children in two representative kindergartens in Fuzhou were studied as research subjects, and the rates of oral pharyngeal carriage of Hi were studied in four seasons. All Hi strains were serotyped and biotyped. RESULTS: The oral pharyngeal carriage of Hi in day care nursery healthy children were 36.7% in winter, 18.0% in autumn, 12.4% in summer and 10.9% in spring respectively. Serotype Hib was preponderant in autumn (6.9%). In winter, the carriage rates of NTHi and Hib were 17.1%, 5.4% respectively. The carriage rates of other serotypes were low. Biotype VII and VIII were preponderant in autumn, spring and summer but biotype VII and VIII were decreasing evidently in winter. CONCLUSION: There was evident seasonal difference in the rates of oral pharyngeal carriage and type of Hi in healthy preschool children. The carriage rate of Hi strains was high in autumn and winter. Results suggested that while the inoculation of Hib-binding bacterial vaccine was expanded the study on new bacterial vaccine of Hi still needs to be augmented.

[The effects of tensile strain and loading time on the secretion of IL-1 beta of human PDLF].

This study aims at exploring the effects of tensile strain and loading time on the secretion of IL-1 beta of human periodontal ligament fibroblast. Five tensile strain values including 0%, 8%, 12%, 16%, 20% and three loading time including 24 h, 48 h, 72 h are set in this study. The prepared cell samples are mounted on the self-devised loading apparatus in vitro. The content of IL-1 beta in each sample was determined using double-antibody ELISA. The secretion amount of IL-1 beta per day is directly proportional to the loading time and tensile strain value in tensile strain group of 8%, 12%, 16%. The secretion amount of IL-1 beta reaches its maximum at tensile strain value of 16% in loading time groups. Loaded strain for 24 h and 48 h, the secretion amount of IL-1 beta at tensile strain value of 20% is obviously more than that at value of 0%, but the amount already begin to decrease apparently. Loaded strain for 72 h, the secretion amount of IL-1 beta decreases to a great extent that it is less than the amount at strain value of 0%. The tensile strain stimulates the secretion of IL-1 beta by human periodontal ligament fibroblast when the strain is under normal physiological extent, but the stimulation effect fades out as time goes on.
