Electrooxidation mechanisms and discharge characteristics of borohydride on different catalytic metal surfaces.

The electrooxidation behavior of BH4(-) on electrocatalytic Pt, hydrolytically active Ni, and noncatalytic Au electrodes were comparatively reexamined and a more generalized reaction mechanism was proposed to explain the very different anodic properties of BH4(-) on the different metal electrodes. In this mechanism, the anodic reaction behavior of BH4(-) are determined by a pair of conjugated reactions: electrochemical oxidation and chemical hydrolysis of BH4(-), the relative rates of which depend on the anodic materials, applied potentials, and chemical states of the anodic surfaces. At Pt surface, the electron number of BH4(-) oxidation increases with the increased potential polarization, while the actual electron number of BH4(-) oxidation on Ni electrode is 4 at most due to the poor electrocatalytic activity of the oxidized Ni surface and the strong catalytic activity of metallic Ni for chemical recombination of the adsorbed H intermediate. On the hydrolytic-inactive Au surface, the anodic reaction of BH4(-) can proceed predominately through direct electrochemical oxidation, delivering a near 8e discharge capacity.

Structural and electrochemical characterization of nanocrystalline LI[Li0.12Ni0.32Mn(0.56)]O2 synthesized by a polymer-pyrolysis route.

A nanocrystalline Li[Li(0.12)Ni(0.32)Mn(0.56)]O(2) powder was synthesized via the pyrolysis of polyacrylate salt precursors prepared by in situ polymerization of the metal salts and acrylate acid. The pyrolysis mechanism of the polymeric precursor is discussed by use of thermal analysis. Layered crystalline structure of the resulting compound was characterized by powder X-ray diffraction and high-resolution transmission electron (TEM) micrographs. The results revealed that the Li[Li(0.12)Ni(0.32)Mn(0.56)]O(2) as prepared has nanosized morphology and good crystallinity even if calcined at 900 degrees C, and the electrodes made from these nanoparticles exhibited high-rate characteristics and can deliver stable discharge capacity (163 mA.h/g) with excellent capacity retention at appropriate charge-discharge voltage interval. Since this preparation method is simple and particularly suitable for preparation of mixed metal oxides, it can be used for industrial production of highly homogeneous metal oxide cathode materials of the lithium-ion batteries.

Chemiluminescence detection of isoniazid using Ru(phen)3(2+)-isoniazid-Ce(IV) system.

In our experiment, it was observed that isoniazid could enhance the chemiluminescence (CL) emission of tris-(1,10-phenanthroline)ruthenium(II) (Ru(phen)3(2+))-cerium(IV) (Ce(IV)) system and this enhancement effect was dependent on the concentration of isoniazid, based on which, a novel CL system was established for the detection of isoniazid. Under the optimum experimental conditions, the dynamic range and detection limit are 7.0 x 10(-2) to 6.5 microg ml(-1) and 2.5 x 10(-2) microg ml(-1), respectively. The R.S.D. is 3.4% (n = 11). The proposed method has been applied to detect the content of isoniazid in the injection solution with satisfactory results. The possible mechanism of the CL reaction was studied.

Lead as own luminescent sensor for determination.

In our experiments, it was observed that adding bromide to Pb2+ solution of N,N'-dimethylformamide (DMF), the highly emissive cluster Pb4Br11(3-) can be formed and the fluorescence intensity of the formed cluster is proportional to the concentration of Pb2+, based on which, a novel, simple approach that uses the emission from itself as the sensor for determination of Pb2+ is proposed. Under the optimum conditions, the linear range and detection limit is 1.0 x 10(-7) to 1.0 x 10(-5) mol l(-1) (correlation coefficient r = 0.9997) and 7.6 x 10(-9) mol l(-1), respectively. Foreign substrates effects were also investigated. The proposed method has been successfully applied to the determination of lead in the synthetic samples. The mechanism of the reaction is also studied.

Determination of DNA by Rayleigh light scattering enhancement of molecular "light switches".

Base on the enhancement of Rayleigh light scattering signals of molecular "light switches" by DNA under acidic condition, a sensitive and convenient method for DNA determination was proposed. The experiments indicated that, under optimum conditions, good linear relationships were obtained between the Rayleigh light scattering intensity and the concentration of nucleic acids. The detect limits of calf thymus DNA (ctDNA) were 13.0 ng ml(-1), 4.2 ng ml(-1), 51.5 ng ml(-1) and 3.0 ng ml(-1) with four "light switches", respectively. Plasmid DNA extracted from Bacillus subtilis were determined by the proposed method with satisfactory results, and the recovery rates of calf thymus DNA were in the range of 94.6-110.7%.
