Polymorphisms of six Y-chromosome STRs in a Chinese population.

The polymorphic short tandem repeat (STR) loci of six Y-chromosome markers were investigated in 112 unrelated Chinese males using a multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Allele and haplotype frequencies for the Y-specific STR loci DYS19, DYS385, DYS389II, DYS390, DYS391 and DYS393 were analyzed by the Y-PLEX 6 Kit. The commonest allele for each locus was: DYS19, allele 15; DYS385, allele 12; DYS389II, allele 28; DYS390, allele 23; DYS391, 10; and DYS393, allele 12. Gene diversity value was calculated from the allelic frequency for each locus. The DYS385 locus proved to be highly polymorphic (0.890), DYS391 showed the lowest value (0.489), and the other loci showed values ranging from 0.646 to 0.897. A total of 99 haplotypes were observed in six Y-specific STR loci, the haplotype diversity was raised to 0.999. The results revealed that a set of six Y-specific STR loci were able to discriminate most of the male individuals in the Chinese population.

Highly selective thiocyanate electrode based on bis-[N-(2-hydroxyethyl)salicylaldimino]copper(II) complex as a neutral carrier.

A novel selective thiocyanate electrode of a PVC membrane based on bis-[N-(2-hydroxyethyl)salicylaldimino]copper(II) [Cu(II)-BNSDM] as a neutral carrier is reported. The selectivity sequence of this electrode is as follows: SCN- > ClO4- > I- > Sal- > Br- > NO2- > Cl- > NO3- > H2PO4- > SO4(2-), which is an anti-Hofmeister selectivity sequence. The electrode exhibits a Nernstian potential linear range to thiocyanate from 1.0 x 10(-1) to 6.0 x 10(-6) mol/L with a detection limit of 2.0 x 10(-6) mol/L and a slope of (-59.0+/-0.2)mV/decade in pH 5.0 of a phosphate buffer solution at 25 degrees C. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and UV spectroscopy techniques were performed to understand the response mechanism of the electrode. The electrode had the advantage of simplicity, high selectivity, fast response and low detection limit compared with the other electrode, which had been reported before. The electrode had been applied to wastewater analysis, and the obtained results were satisfactory.

Analysis of STR polymorphisms in the northeast Chinese population.

The distribution of allele frequencies for 12 short tandem repeats (STR) loci were determined in 300 unrelated healthy Chinese individuals living in northeast of China, using AmpFlSTR Profiler Plus kit and AmpFlSTR Green I kit (PE, Applied Biosystems). In these samples, 123 alleles and 399 genotypes were observed for 12 STR loci. The distribution of these observed genotypes were not significantly different from the expected distribution according to Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium.

Clinical efficacy of albendazole emulsion in treatment of 212 cases of liver cystic hydatidosis.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical efficacy of a new formulation of albendazole emulsion (AbzE) in cases of liver cystic hydatidosis. METHODS: Two regimens of AbzE (10 mg.kg(-1).d(-1) and 12.5 mg.kg(-1).d(-1)) were given to 212 patients with liver cystic hydatidosis in courses ranging from 3 months to more than one year. Assessment of drug efficacy was essentially based on imaging signs with ultrasonography as the main tool. Assessments were performed at the end of different courses and in the follow-up study of 1 - 4 years after the cessation of therapy. RESULTS: At the end of therapeutic courses, the overall cure rate of the 212 cases was 74.5%, with a 99.1% effective rate. In the follow-up study, the cure rate was 83.1%, effective rate was 89.3%, ineffective rate was 0.6%, and recurrence rate was 10.2%. The highest cure rate was observed in cases receiving AbzE 12.5 mg.kg(-1).d(-1) for 9 months. Retreatment of recurrent cases with AbzE obtained satisfactory results. CONCLUSIONS: AbzE surpassed other currently used antihydatidosis drugs or formulations with its promising efficacy and mild side effects, and could be recommended as a drug of choice in the treatment of cystic hydatidosis.

Light-curing technology: past, present, and future.

The availability of light-curable resin systems has led to the development of a variety of technologies for producing the light necessary to cure them. Light, being electromagnetic radiation, is comprised of a wide spectrum of energies including ultraviolet, visible, and infrared. Each wavelength region of light has different characteristics in terms of chemical reactions, most notably polymerization of dental materials. Quartz tungsten halogen, plasma arc curing, laser, and, recently, light-emitting diode have all been important technologies used to produce light through dental curing units. Each technology has unique advantages and disadvantages. Thus, it is important for dental professionals to understand the polymerization processes and the ways in which these processes are affected by light energy.
