Germinal epithelium secretes a peptide hormone, inhibin, that regulates FSH secretion. This substance originates inside the seminiferous tubules, from the Sertoli cells, and is transported towards the head of the epididymis where it is reabsorbed, and thus passes into the bloodstream. Inhibin blocks FSH pituitary secretion; its effect on the hypothalamus is debatable. Inhibin also exists in the female, in ovarian follicles and may have a role in follicular growth regulation.

Pituitary gonadotropins and prolactin were measured from day 1 (G1) to day 4 (G4) of gestation in control or chlorpromazine injected rats (Img/100 g body weight every 8 hours during 72 hours). Chlorpromazine induced a modification of pituitary gonadotropins and prolactin (decrease in LH from G1 to G4; decrease in FSH from G1 to G3; increase in PRL from G1 to G4). Differed implantation by chlorpromazine seemed to be due to a decrease in pituitary gonadotropins and an increase in pituitary prolactin.
Plasma corticosterone, gonadotropins and prolactin are measured from day 1 (G1) to day 4 (G4) of gestation in normal or chlorpromazine injected rats. Chlorpromazine induces a modification of plasma corticosterone, gonadotropins and prolactin (increase in corticosterone and prolactin at G1, p less than 0,001 or P less than 0,01; decrease in LH at G2, p less than 0,01; no modification of FSH). Differed implantations by chlorpromazine seems to be due to an increase in plasma corticosterone and prolactin at G1 and a decrease in plasma LH at G2.
1. The authors studied, in adult male and female rats the effect of one or repeated injections of chlorpromazine on adrenal secretion of corticosterone and pituitary secretion of prolactin. 2. Injections of chlorpromazine increased plasma corticosterone, plasma and pituitary prolactin. 3. The discussion of the results was correlated to the brain catecholamines postulated to be neurotransmitters involved in the control of corticotropin and prolactin pituitary secretion.
