[Intrapulmonary lung sequestration: a case report].

Through the presentation of a classical case of intrapulmonary pulmonary sequestration, the nosology of congenital lung malformations is reviewed. The histology, imaging, and surgical treatment of this congenital anomaly are briefly discussed.

[Ludwig's angina].

Ludwig's angina is a rare infectious condition originating in the oropharyngeal region, most commonly from the teeth. The principal symptoms consist of cervical pain, dyspnea, dysphagia, symmetrical neck swelling and fever. Serious complications include respiratory collapses, mediastinitis, pleural empyema, pericarditis and pericardial tamponade, and may result in the death of the patient. The most useful investigations in patients with suspected Ludwig's angina are clinical assessment, a cervico-thoracic CT-scan to determine the extent of the lesions, microbiological examination and panoramic radiography to detect possible dental focuses of infection. Treatment consists of ensuring adequate ventilation by securing the upper airways, broad spectrum antibiotic therapy, eradication of the source of infection, and often early surgical decompression may be necessary. Rapid diagnosis and appropriate treatment can reduce the mortality rate to 10%.

Intra-abdominal lymphatic malformation.

Intra-abdominal lymphangioma is a rare congenital lymphatic vascular malformation. It is found, most commonly, in adult patients who present with abdominal pain, and whom medical imaging (ultrasound, endoscopy and tomography) reveals a cystic intra-abdominal mass. Such masses may be on the mesentery, in contact with abdominal viscera or may be part of the visceral wall. Diagnosis of intra-abdominal lymphangioma is difficult because of its rarity, and because other pathologies may have the same radiological signs. The diagnosis is confirmed by anatomopathological examination with immunohistochemistry. The treatment is complete surgical excision, in order to prevent recurrence.
