A theoretical study of resonance Raman scattering from molecules: High pressure effect.

The main purpose of this paper has been to study the high pressure effect on the resonance Raman scattering (RRS) of molecules in a dense medium. In deriving the RRS cross section under high pressure, a different approach from that presented in the previous papers has been used, and the resulting expression for the RRS cross section can be used to treat both pressure and temperature effects.

Patterns of factor-VIII related antigen on crossed immunoelectrophoresis and large pore polyacrylamide gel-crossed immunoelectrophoresis in von Willebrand's disease.

Plasma samples from patients with various types of von Willebrand's disease were subdivided into six patterns according to the electrophoretic mobility and shape of VIIIR: Ag on crossed immunoelectrophoresis (CIE): pattern 1 no precipitation are, pattern 2 normal mobility with low arc, arc, pattern 3 intermediate mobility with low arc, pattern 4 faster anodal mobility with low arc, pattern 5 normal mobility with normal are height, pattern 6 faster anodal mobility with normal are height. Of 62 patients, 14 had pattern 1, 6 pattern 2, 16 pattern 3, 12 pattern 4, 9 pattern 5, and 5 pattern 6. Large pore polyacrylamide-agarose gel-crossed immunoelectrophoresis (PAAG-CIE) of crude factor VIII fraction from cryoprecipitate revealed no arcs in patients with pattern 1, three arcs of reduced height in the patients with patterns 2 and 3, four arcs very similar to normal control in patients with pattern 5, and two arcs with fast anodal migration in the patients with patterns 4 and 6. Crude factor VIII fractions from normal cryosupernatant showed one low fast anodally migrating arc corresponding to the fourth arc of normal cryoprecipitate. No peak was seen in patients with pattern 1, and one low fast anodal arc similar to normal control was present in the patients with patterns 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6.

A new mass screening method of detecting UDP-galactose-4-epimerase deficiency.

A new mass screening method for detecting UDP-galactose-4-epimerase deficiency in newborn infants was devised so as to make a useful addition to the Guthrie test. Like Beutler's method, this method enables one to perform convenient spot tests on the basis of fluorometry of NADH. The preferred procedure was determined to be as follows: To a mixture of 10 microliter of 5-10 mM UDP-galactose, 10 microliter of 26 mM NAD, 10 microliter of a 1 M tris-HCl buffer (pH 8.0) and 10 microliter of a 1/100 dilution of a 5 mg/ml UDP-glucose dehydrogenase stock solution, distilled water is added until the total volume reaches 100 microliter. Then a blood-bearing filter paper disc is added to the mixture and, the reaction mixture is incubated at 37 degrees C for 6-17 hr. The resulting test solution is spotted on a Whatman No. 1 filter paper with a capillary tube, air-dried and tested for fluorescence with an ultraviolet light detector. No cases of UDP-galactose-4-epimerase deficiency were found in the present study.

Spinal osteotomy to correct kyphosis in spinal tuberculosis.

Twenty-seven patients with severe tuberculous kyphosis have been treated at the National Murayama Hospital between 1966 and 1977. We have undertaken curettage of the foci and vertebral osteotomy through an anterior approach, followed by gradual correction with a halo pelvic distraction apparatus and subsequent vertebral fusion. Choice of this method depends upon the age of the patient, the degree of kyphosis before correction, and the presence of concomitant lesions. Details of postoperative management are given and their importance is emphasized. The major risks of correction are discussed and precautions suggested.

Pharmacological studies on a new thymoleptic antidepressant, 1-[3-(dimethylamino)propyl]-5-methyl-3-phenyl-1H-indazole (FS-32).

Some pharmacological actions of 1-[3-(dimethylamino)propyl]-5-methyl-3-phenyl-1H-indazole (FS-32), a newly synthesized indazole derivative, were investigated in comparison with imipramine. FS-32 showed anti-reserpine activity in a dose-dependent manner, whereas imipramine exhibited a bell-shaped dose-response pattern. Catecholaminergic potentiation was demonstrated with FS-32. The results obtained from a norepinephrine potentiation test in vitro suggest that FS-32 may act in a manner qualitatively different from the tricyclic antidepressant. FS-32 produced a definite suppressive effect on isolation-induced fighting without affecting coordinated motor activity and on the duration of afterdischarge elicited by electrical stimulation to the amygdala or the hippocampus without producing a slow wave pattern in the EEG. Similar effects on fighting behavior and the afterdischarge were shown under imipramine with a slight motor incoordination and with a slow wave pattern, respectively. FS-32 produced practically no peripheral anti-cholinergic action, while it antagonized central cholinergic activity. FS-32 tended to produce an increase in chatecholamine content in the brain without MAO or COMT inhibitory activity. Norepinephrine uptake was inhibited by FS-32, but less than by imipramine. These pharmacological properties suggest a potential clinical utility of FS-32 as an antidepressant possessing thymoleptic activities.
