Development of a highly cardioselective ultra short-acting beta-blocker, ONO-1101.

A novel, highly cardioselective ultra short-acting beta-blocker, ONO-1101, has been developed for application in the emergency treatment of tachycardia and better control of heart rate in surgery. This agent is approximately nine times more potent in beta-blocking activity in vivo and eight times more cardioselective in vitro than esmolol. This beta-blocking drug has a short duration of activity, enabling rapid recovery after cessation of administration if side effects occur. It can be used safely in patients suffering from acute heart disease and represents a major therapeutic advance in the treatment of heart disease.

Modified Chiari pelvic osteotomy: a long-term follow-up study.

In a series of 100 modified Chiari pelvic osteotomies in ninety-six patients, who were followed for an average of nine years and three months (range, six years to fourteen years and eight months), an excellent or good clinical result was obtained in seventy-eight hips. The level of the osteotomy line on postoperative radiographs was compared with the clinical result. The average clinical result was good in seventy-four (84 per cent) of the eighty-eight patients in whom the osteotomy was at the I-I, I-II, or II-II level, according to the classification of levels by Azuma et al., but was good in only four of the twelve patients in whom the osteotomy was at another level (p = 0.0003). We found that smooth anterior and lateral coverage can be obtained by the use of a dome-shaped osteotomy line.

A long-term follow-up study of total hip replacement with bone graft. Correlations between roentgenographic measurement and hip mobility.

Fifty total hip replacement treating the acetabular deficiency with autologous bone graft from the femoral head were performed on 44 patients with congenital dislocation of the hip. The average age was 55 years. The average follow-up period was 5 years and 2 months, ranging from 3 years, 8 months to 6 years, 11 months. Solid union was demonstrated in all acetabular grafting. No loosening of either acetabular or femoral components occurred. Roentgenological measurements used as a parameter of good results showed that better results were obtained using the true acetabulum (ideal position) with appropriate bony coverage.

[Ultrasonic evaluation of two cases of islet cell tumor of the pancreas].

Small pancreatic tumor is difficult to be diagnosed. Two cases of pancreatic islet cell tumors were examined by ultrasonography. One case was islet cell carcinoma, the other insulinoma. In both cases, ultrasonography was useful in detecting the tumor, judging the location of tumor during surgical operation and deciding the surgical procedure.
