[Studies on the combination action of sisomicin, gentamicin and cefmenoxime, ceftizoxime, cefoperazone, cefotetan against Serratia marcescens and Pseudomonas aeruginosa].

The combined actions of sisomicin (SISO), gentamicin (GM) and cefmenoxime (CMX), ceftizoxime (CZX), cefoperazone (CPZ), cefotetan (CTT) against S. marcescens IFO-3735 and P. aeruginosa IFO-12689 were investigated. The results were summarized as follows. The synergistic effect of the combinations of SISO-CMX, SISO-CZX, SISO-CPZ, SISO-CTT, GM-CMX, GM-CZX, GM-CPZ and GM-CTT using the checker board dilution method on S. marcescens IFO-3735 and P. aeruginosa IFO-12689 were found. Especially the minimum FIC index value of combination of SISO-CTT and GM-CTT were rather low as 0.14 and 0.13, respectively and these synergistic effect was remarkably strong on S. marcescens IFO-3735. With the killing kinetic method, all combinations tested showed the synergistic effect in both bacteria.

The effect of racemomycin-D, a nephrotoxic antibiotic, on cellular metabolism of rat kidney cortex in vitro.

In vitro effects of racemomycin-D on cellular metabolism were examined in rat kidney. Racemomycin-D decreased the concentration gradient of Na+ and K+ across the cell membranes, but failed to influence water content and ATP concentration of kidney cortical slices. The antibiotic inhibited microsomal (Na+ + K+)-ATPase. Preincubation of the microsomes with racemomycin-D enhanced the inhibition about 1.8-fold. Succinoxidase activity of mitochondria remained unaltered in the presence of racemomycin-D, but the antibiotic potently decreased ATP-dependent Ca2+ and Mg2+ uptakes by mitochondria. These results suggest that racemomycin-D probably disorders intracellular homeostasis of Na+, K+ and Ca2+.

Solitary ulcer of the rectum: report of a case and review of the literature.

A 13-year-old girl with Prader-Willi syndrome was admitted to our hospital with an 18-month history of anal bleeding and mucus discharge on defecation. Physical examination revealed obesity, hypogonadism, hypotonia and hypomentia. On digital examination, a nodular mass was palpated on the right wall of the ampulla recti, which was suspected to be carcinoma on a barium enema study. Proctoscopic examination revealed a large, irregular ulceration with white slough at the base, surrounded by the nodular and lumpy mucosa. The lesion was excised by the abdomino-anal pull-through method. The resected specimen showed a lesion of large, shallow, irregular ulcer, 5.0 x 2.2 cm in size. Microscopic examination revealed obliterated lamina propria by fibroblasts and muscle fibers derived from the muscularis mucosae, and misplaced cystic dilated glands in the submucosa at the margin of the ulcer. The gross and microscopic appearances are identical to those of "solitary ulcer of the rectum" described by Madigan and others, and similar to those of "colitis cystica profunda" described by Goodall and others. According to these findings, this lesion was diagnosed as solitary ulcer of the rectum. In the present report, the relationship between solitary ulcer of the rectum and colitis cystica profunda was discussed.
