The distribution of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and core antigen (HBcAg) in surgically removed liver cell carcinomas of 60 Japanese patients was studied by an immunohistochemical method. HBsAg was localized in the cytoplasm, and HBcAg was mainly in the nuclei of normal-appearing liver cells, dysplastic liver cells, and tumor cells. In some instances both HBsAg and HBcAg were contained in the tumor cells and liver cells. HBsAg was found in the nontumorous liver tissue of 30 patients (50%); nine of the HBsAg-containing nontumorous livers also contained HBcAg. HBsAg and/or HBcAg was detected in tumor cells in 7 (23%) of 30 cases with HBsAg-positive liver diseases.

Infections represent a major problem in dialysis treatment, thus the dialyzing room should be kept abacterial as possible. We have installed 15-watt ultra-violet (U-V.) lamps for every 13.5 m2 on the ceiling for the purpose of the room disinfection and used them for 16 hours nightly after working hours. Bacteria were killed with over 10 hours irradiation even at the areas of low U-V. intensity where the irradiation may not be direct. This unexpected effectiveness might be from the influence of reflected rays and 03 produced. When half the lamps were turned on, the bacteriocidal effect was not sufficient in some areas. Any living organism with nucleic acids must be inactivated by this treatment, for the baceteriocidal effect is due to the nucleic acids injury. Furthermore, safety, readiness after the treatment, easy application and the negligible costs would make this method more advantageous to the other methods in room disinfection.
We used the qualitative Hanssen technique in albino rats to seek morphologic demonstration of tubular obstruction in two types of acute renal failure: one induced by folic acid and another by methemoglobin. Immediately after the intravenous injection of folic acid, 250 mg/kg body weight, the animals became almost anuric. Two to three hours after the injection, sodium ferrocyanide remained within the proximal convoluted tubules. After the intravenous injection of methemoglobin, 0.5 to 1.0 g/kg body weight, the animals became oliguric but not anuric. Sodium ferrocyanide injected with methemoglobin was seen mainly in distal tubules and collecting ducts 2 to 3 hours after the injection. The degree of tubular dilatation was more marked in the former model than in the latter, in agreement with the degree of oliguria. These morphologic findings were taken to indicate that the above two types of acute renal failure were caused by tubular obstruction rather than by intrarenal vasoconstriction and subsequent cessation of glomerular filtration. (Am J Pathol 87:323-330, 1977).
The purpose of this study was mainly to examine some basic problems of the Hanssen technique for the evaluation of single nephron glomerular filtration rate (SNGFR). Firstly, experiments were performed using Wistar rats to determine the amount of C14-ferrocyanide necessary to give sufficient C14 radioactivity in dissected nephrons. Using 200 muCi of C14-ferrocyanide, the samples of dissected nephrons provided only twice as much as background. Hence, we chose the amount of 600 to 700 muCi of C14-ferrocyanide for each rat in the later experiments, which yielded the radioactivity 5 to 6 times as much as background. Secondly, the homogeneity of intrarenal C14-ferrocyanide distribution was tested. Five superficial (SUP) and juxtamedullary (JM) proximal tubules four different regions were dissected and the radioactivity of those nephrons was counted. The distribution of C14-ferrocyanide in each piece was representative of the overal distribution. The summary of morphologic and clearance studies were as follows. The mean lengths of proximal tubules of 40 SUP nephrons, 5.3 +/- 0.2 mm, and 39 JM nephrons, 6.3 +/- 0.1 mm, were significantly different (P less than 0.01). The mean glomerular diameter of the JM nephrons, 110 +/- 2.7 mu, was significantly greater than that of the SUP nephrons, 95 +/- 3.1 mu (P less than 0.01). The mean SNGFR of 129 SUP nephrons, 23.4 +/- 4.2 nl/min/100g Body Weight (BW), and that of 130 JM nephrons, 34.5 +/- 5.1 nl/min/100g BW, were significantly different (P less than 0.01). The ratio of superficial/juxtamedullary nephron glomerular filtration rate (S/JM Ratio) was 0.85 +/- 0.02. We conclude that C14-ferrocyanide is regularly distributed to the kidney and that it is necessary to infuse sufficient amount of C14-ferrocyanide in this technique.
Single cell suspensions, obtained from rat kidneys, were cultured with various concentrations of HgCl2 for different times to examine the effects on cellular synthetic activity. Unexpectedly, the RNA synthesis of kidney cells was stimulated with low doses of HgCl2, whereas it was inhibited with higher doses. Even at a higher dose, RNA synthesis was stimulated during early incubation but was inhibited during longer incubations. Thus, the effect of mercury showed a biphasic pattern both in dose-response and time-response relationships. Moreover, once the cells were exposed to HgCl2 for a certain period, RNA syntehsis was irreversibly inhibited. Since RNA synthesis was inhibited earlier than DNA or a protein synthesis, the RNA synthesizing system appeared most susceptible. Without HgCl2, by the time DNA synthesis reached its maximum, protein and RNA synthesis had already declined. In contrast, RNA synthesis of HgCl2-treated cells remained at its maximal level and showed no decline when DNA synthesis reached its peak.
