Effect of cathepsin B on thymocyte apoptosis in spontaneously hypertensive rats.

AIM: To further investigate the mechanism of the thymus dysfunction in spontaneously hypertensive rats. METHODS: The location of cathepsin B expression was determined by in situ hybridization. The expression of cathepsin B was analyzed by Northern blot, and thymocyte apoptosis was detected by TUNEL and flow cytometer, respectively. RESULTS: The expression of cathepsin B in thymus paralleled with thymocyte apoptosis both in vitro and in vivo. Cathepsin B transcripts were located in the plasma of thymocytes and were more over-expressed of 6- and 8-week-old SHR than those in the thymus of WKY. CONCLUSION: Thymocyte apoptosis in SHR is increased and this phenomenon is associated with the expression of cathepsin B.

Retention modeling of refractory ceramic fibers (RCF) in humans.

A mathematical retention model has been developed to predict the lung burden and size distribution of kaolin refractory ceramic fibers (RCF) in the pulmonary region of the human lung during exposure. Fiber dissolution, breakage, and differential clearance are considered in this model; rates for these processes are obtained by extrapolation from available data on laboratory rats. The lung burden predicted by this model is in general agreement with fiber counts from three factory workers. An important prediction from this study is that clearance of RCF is not significantly impaired at a fiber concentration beneath 10 f/cm3 during occupational exposure.

Intracerebral co-grafting of Schwann's cells and fetal adrenal medulla in the treatment of Parkinson's disease.

Intracerebral co-grafting of Schwann's cells and human fetal adrenal medullary tissue was performed in 10 patients with Parkinson's disease. One to six months after grafting, symptoms were improved significantly for 1 to 3 grade. Among them, 2 patients resumed nearly normal daily activities. Long-term follow-up showed that the symptoms were not improved satisfactorily in some patients. It is considered that careful selection of patients, administration of amantadine, and co-grafting of Schwann's cells which prompts the survival of chromaffin cells are essential to better results.

Neither awake nor sleep blood pressures better predict target-organ effect.

We sought to assess the strengths of commonly used ambulatory blood pressure (ABP) parameters as predictors of transmitral flow/velocity ratio (E/A) and the dimensions that govern the left ventricular (LV) mass index. ABP, E/A, and LV dimensions were assessed in 47 subjects, with inclusion of 45 in the final data analysis. The results of four weekly (96 h total) ABP studies were averaged for each subject. No single ABP parameter immerged as a "best predictor." Furthermore, casual blood pressures taken at the beginning of the echo examination had predictive strength for LV mass which was similar to that of the ambulatory data. In the present study, neither awake nor sleep ABPs differed significantly with respect to correlations with indices of LV structure.
