[Toxic and teratogenic effects of the ammonium salt of fosamine on the development of quail and chick embryos].

The effects of a commercial spray preparation of ammonium salt ppf fosamine (a defoliant) on quail and chick eggs have been studied. The results lead us to conclude that under the stated conditions the product has little embryotoxicity. However, it does have teratogenic effects on the steal and on the cervical, dorsal and posterior axial skeleton. The observed malformations are more severe and appear more frequently in quail than in chick embryos.

[Embryotoxic and teratogenic action of dichlorvos (organophosphate insecticide) on the development of the quail embryo].

Incubation of quail embryos in a DDVP-enriched atmosphere (0,002 18 mg dichlorvos/m3 air) reveals both embryotoxic and teratogenic effects of this pesticide. The embryos surviving beyond the 5th day were affected with multiple malformations associated to those ascribed to an anticholinesterase action: lordosis, scoliosis... Although incubation chambers were ventilated twice a day, the results can be modulated according to the nature (aluminium, plastic, cardboard) of the boxes which were used.

[Effects of lindane upon the reproductive function in four generations running in the quail. Studies of gonads and müllerian tract in embryos, one day chicken and adults (author's transl)].

The effect of lindane commercial solution spraying on quail eggs is studied in four generations running issued from a single parental strain. Observations have been made on fourteen-day embryos, one-day chicken and also two-or eight-month adults quail. The results lead to conclude that pathogenous effects of lindane on gonads and müllerian tract are slowly annuled through successive generations when the experimental procedure consists in treating only the parental eggs. Conversely, following pesticide administration repeated at every generation, the action becomes cumulative and the ratio of aberrations increases. In ovarian and testicular tissues there are cyto-histopathological modifications. Many gonocytes are abnormal and cannot divide. Some of these cells degenerate at the meiotic prophase. Egg production and fertility in adults depend on these phenomenons.

[Testosterone and dihydrotestosterone radioimmunoassays in Müllerian ducts of control and testosterone propionate injected quail embryos (author's transl)].

Testosterone (T) and dihydrotestosterone (DHT) have been quantitated by means of radioimmunoassay in Müllerian ducts (CM) from control quail embryos (6 to 8-day male and 6 to 15-day female) and from female embryos injected with 50 nanograms of testosterone propionate (PT) on the 8th day. These hormones are demonstrable in undifferentiated CM from 6-day control embryos. In control males although a highly significant decrease of the CM weight occurs during the CM involution, the detected amounts of androgens remain at a constant level. In control females, the right CM shows a slight increase of the androgen content during the rudimentation, i.e. from day 8 on; in the left CM: the highest steroid levels are found on the 6th day; while the CM differentiate, concentrations decrease and become similar to those found in neutral tissues. Given testosterone propionate on day 8 female embryos: right CM: both testosterone and DHT levels highly increase until day 14; the CM of treated embryos contain 8 times as much steroid as control; left CM: testosterone and DHT increase after injection until day 9,5; they slightly decrease between days 9,5 and 12, and then remain constant on day 14. Differences in concentrations are highly significant between CM of control and of PT - injected embryos. It seems that the binding sites of these androgens are more numerous during the involution and that bound testosterone or DHT could take a part in CM regression in male embryos and right CM rudimentation in female embryos.

[Inhibitory effect of some antrogenic hormones, administered in ovo after sex differentiation, on the development of Müllerian ducts in female bird embryos].

Some androgenic hormones injected into the vitellus of quail (8 and 10 days old) or chick eggs (10 and 12 days of incubation) inhibit the left Müllerian duct development and mainly that of the shell gland. They slow down or stop the right duct involution. After these effects, histo-pathogenic disturbances, affect them.

[The combined effects of testosterone propionate and a temporary lowering of temperature on the fate of Müllerian ducts of the female bird embryo. Morphological, histological, and cytobiochemical studies].

The action of testosterone propionate combined with a temporary lowering of temperature after the sexual differentiation of chick and quail female embryos--inhibits the cephalo-caudal regression of the right müllerian duct--prevents the development of the left one. In some cases, these two ducts are thread and often have the same length: in other cases, the involution of the müllerian tractus may be total.

[Study of the testosterone action on quail and chick müllerian ducts in "in vitro" culture (author's transl].

Right and left müllerian ducts of 6 to 9 days old chick embryos, 7 to 9 days old quail embryos and left differentiated ducts of chick embryos to 10 to 19 days of development are explanted on medium with testosterone. In "in vitro" culture, this hormone is able to provoke regressive phenomenons and the complete disapearance of müllerian epithelium; only a mensenchyme string subsists similarly to that observed "in ovo" during the involution of these gonoducts in the male embryos. The müllerian epithelial cells of the 19 days old female embryos undergo a quick autolysis. The action is selective, neither the Wolffian duct nor the mesonephros are attaqued.
