Immunity of dogs against Babesia canis, its vector tick Dermacentor reticulatus, and Ixodes ricinus in endemic area.

Previous epidemiological studies allowed us to accurately define endemic areas of canine babesiosis and tick distribution in southeastern France (Martinod, 1983). Using a micro-ELISA test 100 dogs sera were tested with 3 antigens: Babesia canis, Dermacentor reticulatus and Ixodes ricinus. Antibodies against B. canis and its vector D. reticulatus were detected in an endemic area, sometimes with high levels (optical density 1.38 and 0.80 respectively). A correlation factor and regression lines were found between ELISA activity of B. canis and vector tick antigens, even for dogs which never showed any babesiosis symptoms. These results were compared with those of an area without any babesiosis. Furthermore I. ricinus antigens detected ELISA activity in sera of dogs; some cross reactions were observed between I. ricinus and D. reticulatus antigen.

Antigen requirements and specificity of a microplate enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for detecting infectious bronchitis viral antibodies in chicken serum.

The conditions of a rapid, indirect-enzyme linked immunosorbent assay for Infectious Bronchitis Virus (IBV) antibodies have been established. Optimal sensitivity was obtained using 10 micrograms/ml protein concentration of the Mass 41 strain purified from infected allantoic fluid. Specificity was demonstrated with Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV) antigen-antibody system. Negligible crossreactions were observed. After bromelain or lipase treatment IBV had an ELISA reactivity similar to untreated particles suggesting that peripheral constituents of IBV play a minor role when whole virus is absorbed on solid phase. The method offers a simple and specific antibody assay which could be used for the laboratory diagnosis of avian infectious bronchitis.

[Prevention of ocular toxicity of ethambutol: study of zincaemia and chromatic analysis (author's transl)].

In order to define the means of prevention of the ocular toxicity of ethambutol (EMB), 72 patients under treatment with EMB-INH-Rifampicin combination were subjected to systematic analysis of plasma, blood and urinary zinc levels together with a full ophthalmic examination. Comparison of the results from 12 patients sustaining ocular damage at the time of treatment with the results of 60 others: 1) demonstrates the existence of a correlation between plasma zinc levels before treatment and the probability of ocular damage from EMB (high risk for zinc is less than 0.70 mg/l - almost no risk for zinc greater than 1 mg/l); 2) confirms that dyschromatopsia is one of the first signs of ocular damage through EMB and thus constitutes an alarm signal; 3) suggests that the ocular toxicity of EMB might appear in the retina before the optic nerve.

[Serological study of several strains of foot-and-mouth disease virus type "O" isolated in Europe between 1971 and 1975: application of the biomathematical system of classification].

Nine strains of foot-and-mouth disease virus type "O" received in our laboratories since 1971 have been studied serologically by Osler's quantitative method of complement fixation (50% hemolysis). The results, submitted to the biomathematical system of bidimensional classification, allow to conclude that at present in Europe there are two groups of foot-and-mouth disease strains of type "O"; one has reference to our vaccinal strain "O Lausanne 1965" and the other to "O Romania 1972" strain, which has certain points of similarity with subtype "O2". In addition, strain "O Hungary 1975" has been studied on bovines; the immunological tests confirm the serological test.

[Classification of strains of foot-and-mouth disease virus according to the relationship-dominance model for a better understanding of the concept of serologic and immunologic subtype].

The homologous and heterologous serological titers of a specific serum can be integrated in a bidimensional system which characterizes the criteria of relationship and dominace. This bidimensional classification specifies more precisely the serological properties of each strain compared with the others (taxonomic purpose) and allows eventual guidance in the choice of vaccinal strains (epizootiologic and prophylactic purposes).

Dry aerosol vaccination against Newcastle disease. I. Safety and activity controls on chickens.

A new technic or immunization against Newcastle disease in chicken was developed: this method consists of dispersing lyophilized products by aerosols. One to fourteen day old chickens, with and without parental antibodies, were vaccinated with increasing amounts (10(-1) to 10(5)EID50) of HB1 and LaSota attenuated viruses. 10(4)EID50, inhaled theoretical dose, gave better results when the animals were challenged with the virulent strain. Under laboratory conditions, no respiratory problems occurred in vaccinated animals; but there is 10 to 20% mortality among animals treated by aerosols in poultry houses, because of respiratory diseases developed after vaccination.
