Numerical approach to plug-flow activated sludge reactor kinetics.

In this study, general relationships applicable to a wide variety of microbial-mediated treatment processes are developed using a number of continuous-flow stirred tank reactors-in-series. Simultaneous equations resulting from mass balance on substrate and biomass are solved numerically taking the longitudinal biomass gradient into account. A relationship between substrate and biomass concentrations is developed as a function of hydraulic residence time. Monod kinetics and mathematical models of reactors-in-series are used to represent the actual conditions resulting from varying degrees of axial dispersion and wastewater quality. Dimensionless quantities are used to reduce the number of parameters to be taken into account. Computer techniques are applied to express the results generally. By means of the numerical approach, the variation of the ratio between the hydraulic residence time of a given reactor and that of an equivalent plug-flow tank with the same inlet and outlet conditions is investigated. Results are expressed in the form of graphs to characterize the plug-flow activated sludge systems and to provide a basis of design. Experimental data reported in the literature are also evaluated to demonstrate the cases where the existing classical solution to the problem differs from the actual results obtained from the computer program and the design graphs given.

Hydraulic characteristics of biological filters.

Relationships between the removal efficiency and the hydraulic regimes of trickling filters were investigated. At low flow rates, where break-up of liquid jets occurs and drops form, completely mixed conditions prevail. For large hydraulic loadings effluent concentrations were calculated by means of a dispersed plug flow model. The ranges of validity of these models were studied theoretically. The effects of drop formation and breakage of liquid jets on the substrate utilization are expressed in terms of hydraulic and physical properties of the media and liquid.

A numerical approach to activated sludge kinetics.

Mass balance equations for biomass and substrate are numerically solved to determine the effects of different variables on suspended growth systems. Dimensionless quantities and computer techniques are used to express the results generally. Monod kinetics and reactors-in-series principles are applied to explain variations in axial dispersion and waste-water quality experienced in real systems. An attempt has been made to determine the effluent concentrations as a function of two parameters, i.e. a dimensionless time and a dimensionless substrate concentration (of the incoming waste-water). The computer results have been generalized in the form of design tables. An available approximate method for plug-flow reactors has been compared with the solution obtained in this way, and the resulting error has been demonstrated. In this study, results obtained from large numbers of reactors-in-series are reported to characterize plug-flow conditions. Performance of reactors subjected to varying degrees of axial dispersion will be stressed in a subsequent paper.
