Derivative spectrophotometric determination of 5-(hydroxymethyl)-2-furaldehyde (HMF) and furfural in Locust bean extract.

Furfural and 5-(hydroxymethyl)-2-furaldehyde (HMF) are useful indicators of accurate storage temperature of food samples. A first derivative spectrophotometric method was developed for the determination of the furfural and HMF level in Locust bean pekmez. In addition, the levels of the furfural and HMF were investigated during Locust bean pekmez preparation. The recoveries were generally nearly 100%. This method is also rapid and accurate and results in economical analyses of furaldehydes.

A study of prolidase in mothers, their newborn babies and in non-pregnant controls.

The prolidase activity in serum and in erythrocytes was measured in 28 healthy mothers and in the cord blood of their newborn babies in using a modified Chinard method. 45 healthy non-pregnant women aged between 15-36 years formed a control group. Biochemical parameters (CK, BUN, C-peptid, AFP, Uric acid) were also measured. The serum and erythrocyte prolidase activities in maternal blood were 45.8+/-13.4 U/L and 37.8+/-2.7 U/g Hb respectively. There was no significant difference in the enzyme activities between pregnant women and the control group (p>0.05). However serum and erythrocyte prolidase activity in cord blood (20.3+/-8.2 U/L and 31.6+/-7.3 U/g Hb) was significantly different when compared with control group (53.4+/-14.7 U/L in serum and 42.3+/-10.3 U/g Hb in erythrocyte, p<0.001). There was a significant correlation between maternal and cord blood serum enzyme activity (r: 0.76 p<0.01). This correlation was also shown in erythrocyte prolidase activities of both groups (r: 0.49, p<0.05). Cord blood prolidase activity was positively correlated with birth weight (r: 0.89, p<0.01). Prolidase activity in cord blood was low even though collagen turnover is increased in fetal growth.

Clinical and histopathologic findings of iris nevus (Cogan-Reese) syndrome.

PURPOSE: To report a case of Cogan-Reese syndrome. METHOD: Case report. A 37-year-old man presented with Cogan-Reese syndrome. RESULTS: Visual acuity was 0.5 in the right eye and 1.0 in the left eye. There were corneal edema and pigmented nodules on the anterior surface of the iris, iris atrophy and ectropion uvea in the right eye. The intraocular pressure was 42 mmHg in the right eye and there was glaucomatous optic atrophy of the optic disk. Trabeculectomy with mitomycin C has been performed as the intraocular pressure did not decrease with the maximum medical treatment. Electron microscopic examination of the trabeculum and the iris tissue revealed a lot of melanocytic cells in the stroma. CONCLUSION: Trabeculectomy with mitomycin C might be effective in Cogan-Reese cases with glaucoma resistant to medical treatment.

Anticardiolipin antibodies and retinal vascular complications in Behçet's disease.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Intravascular thrombosis is a well-recognized feature of Behçet's disease (BD). In this study, the existence of a connection between serum anticardiolipin (aCL) antibodies and retinal vascular complications in BD is investigated. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Serum aCL antibody levels were quantified in 31 patients with BD, all of whom fulfilled the major criteria of the disease. Patients were evaluated in terms of retinal vascular complications. Serum aCL antibody levels were determined through the ELISA method. Statistical analysis was performed with the chi-squared test and the Fisher exact test. RESULTS: Of 12 patients with high aCL antibody levels, retinal vascular thrombosis was detected in 5 and retinal vasculitis was present in 8. However, there was no statistically significant relation between these complications and serum aCL antibody elevation (P > .05). CONCLUSION: Based on this series of 31 patients with BD, there does not seem to be a significant correlation between retinal vascular complications and serum aCL antibody levels.

Albumin Naskapi variant in North American Indians and Eti Turks.

Both conventional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and a new type of electrophoretic screening procedure indicate that the polymorphic albumin variants Naskapi, found chiefly in the Naskapi Indians of Quebec, and Mersin, found in the Eti Turks of southeastern Turkey, are molecularly identical or very similar and that the amino acid substitution site in these variants is located between residues 330 and 446. This discovery is consistent with a genetic relationship between the Eti Turks and American Indians. We also report a new variant found in the Eti Turks, albumin Adana, which migrates similarly to albumin B on conventional gels but which our new system shows to differ from the common albumin A and albumin B by a substitution between residues 549 and 585.

Lipoprotein (a) in Behçet's disease as an indicator of disease activity and in thrombotic complications.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the utility of plasma concentrations of lipoprotein (a) (Lp(a)) as an indicator of disease activity in Behçet's disease and to investigate its role in thrombotic complications of this disease. METHODS: 30 patients (19 male, 11 female) with Behçet's disease (8 active, 22 inactive) were enrolled in the study group and 30 healthy individuals (16 male, 14 female) in the control group. Seven of the inactive Behçet's disease patients had a history of thrombotic complications. The disease activity was evaluated by clinical manifestations (oral aphthous lesions, genital ulcerations, uveitis and vasculitis) and laboratory investigations (leucocyte count, lipoprotein (a), C-reactive protein (CRP), complement 3 (C3) and complement 4 (C4) concentrations). RESULTS: Plasma Lp(a) and other acute phase reactant concentrations were significantly higher in the study group than in the controls (p < 0.01). These concentrations were also higher during the active period of the disease than during the inactive phase (p < 0.01). Lp(a) concentrations were significantly correlated with concentrations of other acute phase reactants. There was no difference between the groups with and without thrombotic complications for any of these measurements. CONCLUSIONS. Plasma levels of Lp(a) might be an indicator of disease activity in Behçet's disease. There is no correlation between Lp(a) levels and thrombotic sequela in inactive Behçet's disease. However, further studies are needed on the thrombogenic role of Lp(a) during the active phase of thrombophlebitis, and in larger series.

Adenosine deaminase activities in sera, lymphocytes and granulocytes in patients with cutaneous leishmaniasis.

Adenosine deaminase (ADA) activities in sera, lymphocytes and granulocytes in patients with cutaneous leishmaniasis were investigated and compared with control groups. Fifty patients and 50 healthy individuals were studied. The clinical diagnosis was parasitologically confirmed by culture and Giemsa stain. ADA activities were measured by colorimetric method. Serum ADA activities 37.80 +/- 11.90, 18.28 +/- 6.08 IU/L (p < 0.0001), lymphocyte specific ADA activities 14.90 +/- 7.42, 8.38 +/- 7.42 U/mg protein (p = 0.04), granulocyte specific ADA activities 1.15 +/- 0.73, 1.09 +/- 0.67 U/mg protein (p > 0.05) were found in patients and control groups, respectively. ADA activity increases in some infectious diseases were cell mediated immune mechanisms are dominant. In cutaneous leishmaniasis, lymphokine-mediated macrophage activity is the main effector mechanism. Increase in serum and lymphocyte ADA activities in patients with cutaneous leishmaniasis may be dependent on and reflects the increase in phagocytic activity of macrophages and maturation of T-lymphocytes.
