A relationship exists between several semen parameters and the ability of spermatozoa to capacitate. The increase of oligoteratozoospermia, which could be related to testicular dysfunction, is correlated with the decrease of the percentage of spermatozoa able to "capacitate". The increase of loss of motility with time, which could be related to abnormalities of the seminal fluid, is also correlated with a decreased number of spermatozoa able to "capacitate".
Pachytene analysis was carried out on an infertile man heterozygous for a pericentric inversion of chromosome 6. The synaptic behavior of the bivalent 6 inversion was analyzed using electron microscopy in silver stained surface microspread of the inversion-bearing spermatocytes. Possible mechanisms of the sterilizing effect caused by the autosomal inversion are discussed.
RNA synthesis was studied autoradiographically using [3H]-uridine at different stages of human spermatogenesis and especially at the pachytene stage. Morphological and functional evidence have shown the X Chromosome to be allocyclic relatively to the autosomes, and apparently inactive throughout the whole meiosis. No RNA precursor was incorporated by the X at any stage of male meiosis. The authors suggest that this technique could be used in cases of human rearranged chromosomes, in order to elucidate the mechanism of spermatogenic breakdown in cases of hypofertility or sterility in humans.
