Apoptotic activity is increased in parallel with the metaplasia-dysplasia-carcinoma sequence of the bronchial epithelium.

A high level of apoptotic activity and an independence of apoptosis from the expression of p53 and bcl-2 have been observed in non-small-cell lung carcinoma. We examined 44 samples of normal, metaplastic and premalignant (i.e. mild, moderate and severe dysplasias and carcinoma in situ) bronchial epithelia to evaluate whether differences in the apoptotic activity could already be seen in the stages preceding squamous cell carcinoma of the lung (SQCLC). Apoptotic cells and bodies were visualized by 3' end labelling. The expression of p53 and members of the bcl-2 gene family, such as bcl-2, bax and mcl-1, were determined immunohistochemically with specific antibodies. The relative number of apoptotic cells and bodies [apoptotic index (AI%)] was already increased threefold as the normal bronchial epithelium changed to squamous metaplasia, and the AIs of the dysplastic lesions were about four times higher than those of the normal epithelium. Apoptosis was significantly associated with cell proliferation, as determined by proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) immunohistochemistry. However, the extent of apoptosis did not correlate with the expression of p53, bcl-2, bax and mcl-1. We conclude that, in the metaplasia-dysplasia-carcinoma sequence in the lung, the elevation of the AI% is an early event associated with cell proliferation activity, but is independent of the expression of p53, bcl-2, mcl-1 and bax.

Expression of caspases 3, 6 and 8 is increased in parallel with apoptosis and histological aggressiveness of the breast lesion.

The aim of this investigation was to study the expression of caspases 3, 6 and 8 and their association to apoptosis in preneoplastic and neoplastic lesions of the breast. The material consisted of nine benign breast epithelial hyperplasias, 15 atypical hyperplasias, 74 in situ and 82 invasive carcinomas. The extent of apoptosis was assessed by the TUNEL method and caspase 3, 6 and 8 expression by immunohistochemistry with specific antibodies. Increased caspase 3 immunopositivity, as compared to staining of normal breast ductal epithelium, was seen in 22% of benign epithelial hyperplasias, 25% of atypical hyperplasias, 58% of in situ carcinomas and 90% of invasive carcinomas. The corresponding percentages for caspase 6 and 8 were 11%, 25%, 60%, 87% and 22%, 57%, 84%, 83% respectively. In high-grade in situ lesions there were significantly more cases with strong caspase 3, 6 and 8 immunoreactivity than in low- and intermediate-grade lesions (P = 0.0045, P = 0.049 and P = 0.0001 respectively). In invasive carcinomas, however, no association between a high tumour grade and caspase 3, 6 or 8 expression was found (P = 0.27, P = 0.26 and P = 0.69 respectively). The mean apoptotic index was 0.14 +/- 0.14% in benign epithelial hyperplasias, 0.17 +/- 0.12% in atypical hyperplasias, 0.61 +/- 0.88% in in situ carcinomas and 0.94 +/- 1.21% in invasive carcinomas. In all cases strong caspase 3, 6 and 8 positivity was significantly associated with the extent of apoptosis (P < 0.001, P = 0.015 and P = 0.050 respectively). The results show that synthesis of caspases 3, 6 and 8 is up-regulated in neoplastic breast epithelial cells in parallel to the increase in the apoptotic index and progression of the breast lesions.

Accelerated apoptosis and low bcl-2 expression associated with neuroendocrine differentiation predict shortened survival in operated large cell carcinoma of the lung.

In order to test the hypothesis that increased apoptotic activity is connected with neuroendocrine differentiation and low differentiation degree in large cell carcinoma (LCLC) and is regulated by bcl-2 family proteins, we analysed the extent of apoptosis and tumor necrosis and their relation to the expression of bcl-2, bax, bak and mcl-1 in 35 LCLCs, of which 20 were classified as large cell neuroendocrine lung carcinomas (LCNEC) and 15 as large cell non-neuroendocrine lung carcinomas (LCNNEC). The extent of apoptosis was determined by detecting and counting the relative and absolute numbers of apoptotic cells and bodies using in situ 3 -end labelling of the apoptotic DNA. The extent and intensity of expression of the bcl-2, bax, bak and mcl-1 proteins were studied by immunohistochemistry. Also the relative volume density of necrosis was evaluated and correlated with the other parameters. Finally, all the parameters were evaluated as prognostic markers and correlated with data on the survival of the patients. Relatively high apoptotic indices were seen in both tumor types (average for both 2.53%, range 0.09 27.01%). Significantly higher bcl-2 and bak indices were detected more often in LCNECs than in LCNNECs. Immunohistochemically detected bax, bcl-2 and bak expression was independent of apoptotic index in both tumor types, while there was a statistically significant positive association between mcl-1 expression and apoptotic index in LCNNEC but not in LCNEC. There was a statistically significant association between high apoptotic index and shortened survival in LCLC. However, no association was found between tumor stage and apoptosis. The patients with LCNEC and low bcl-2 protein expression had a significantly shorter survival time than those with high bcl-2 indices. There was also a clear association between shortened survival and necrotic LCNNEC. LCLCs show relatively high apoptotic activity, which is associated with shortened survival. The expression of bcl-2, bak and mcl- 1 is associated with neuroendocrine differentiation in LCLC. Finally, our results support some previous reports suggesting that bcl-2 expression in combination with some other markers involved in apoptosis and/or proliferation may be of prognostic value in cases of lung carcinoma with neuroendocrine differentiation.

Apoptosis and expression of caspases 3, 6 and 8 in malignant non-Hodgkin's lymphomas.

In this study we investigated the immunohistochemical expression of caspases 3, 6 and 8 in 85 malignant non-Hodgkin's lymphomas and in 4 hyperplastic lymph nodes. The extent of apoptosis and the immunohistochemical expression of bcl-2 and bax was also studied. Caspase 3 immunoreactivity was seen in 84/85 (99%), caspase 6 in 46/85 (54%), and caspase 8 in 66/85 (78%) lymphomas. The immunoreactivity for caspase 3 was diffuse cytoplasmic while antibodies to caspase 6 and 8 showed granular and fragmented, sometimes also nuclear immunopositivity. High-grade non-Hodgkin's lymphomas expressed strong caspase 6 and 8 immunoreactivity significantly more often than low-grade lymphomas (p = 0.016 and p = 0.0002, respectively). Strong caspase 3 immunoreactivity was also seen more often in high-grade lymphomas, but the association did not reach statistical significance (p = 0.14). There was a strong association between the expression of caspase 3 and 6 (p = 0.032), caspase 3 and 8 (p = 0.042), and especially between caspase 6 and 8 (p = <0.00001). There was a significant difference in the apoptotic index between low-grade (0.59+/-0.44%) and high-grade lymphomas (1.96+/-1.92%) (p<0.001). Strong bcl-2 expression was seen in 35/80 (44%) and strong bax expression in 20/80 (25%) lymphomas. No significant association was found between the expression of bcl-2 or bax and the expression of the caspases. According to the results the expression of caspases 6 and 8 is upregulated in high-grade compared with low-grade lymphomas and probably contributes to the execution of apoptosis in them. A similar tendency could also be seen with caspase 3. The expression of the three caspases is significantly associated, suggesting that it is mutually regulated. Finally, the results suggest that the expression of bcl-2 or bax does not influence the expression of caspases 3, 6 and 8 in malignant lymphomas to a significant degree.

Apoptosis during breast carcinoma progression.

The purpose of this study was to investigate apoptosis, proliferation, and the expression of apoptosis-influencing proteins bcl-2 and bax and estrogen and progesterone receptors during breast carcinoma progression. The material consisted of 53 paired breast carcinoma samples representing primary and recurrent tumors and 24 control samples. The recurrent sample was located either in the breast scar tissue or at a distant metastatic site. Apoptosis was detected both morphologically and by 3' end labeling of fragmented DNA. Cell proliferation was evaluated immunohistochemically by the MIB index. The expressions of bcl-2, bax, and estrogen and progesterone receptors were studied immunohistochemically. There was a significant increase in the extent of apoptosis and proliferation in recurrent tumors compared to the primary lesions (P = 0.015 and P = 0.038, respectively). In primary tumors with an apoptotic index of >0.50%, the survival of the patients was significantly shorter (P = 0.015). In cases with a significant increase in apoptosis or proliferation in the recurrent tumor, the survival of the patients was significantly shorter (P = 0.009 and P = 0.003, respectively). Of the variables analyzed, bcl-2 expression and a positive estrogen receptor status were significantly associated with a low extent of apoptosis (P = 0.010 and P = 0.042, respectively). Their changes were parallel to the changes in apoptosis during tumor progression, although the associations did not reach statistical significance. The results show that increased apoptosis is associated with a worse prognosis in breast carcinoma. A significant increase in apoptosis in recurrent breast carcinoma lesions predicts a worse clinical outcome.

Apoptosis and expression of apoptosis regulating proteins bcl-2, mcl-1, bcl-X, and bax in malignant mesothelioma.

We investigated apoptosis and the expression of bcl-2, mcl-1, bcl-X, and bax in histological sections from 35 malignant mesotheliomas and 21 metastatic adenocarcinomas. Moreover, the expression of bcl-2, mcl-1, bcl-X, and bax were assessed by Western blotting in nonmalignant human mesothelial cells (Met5A) and seven malignant cell lines. The apoptotic index in mesotheliomas was 1.07+/-1.14%. Patients with mesotheliomas showing a high apoptotic index (> or =0.75%) had a worse prognosis (P = 0.008). bcl-2 positivity was observed in only seven cases, but bcl-X, mcl-1, and bax positivity was seen in all of them. In immunoblotting experiments, all mesothelioma cell lines were negative for bcl-2 but positive for bcl-X, mcl-1, and bax. The apoptotic index in bcl-2-negative mesotheliomas was 1.25+/-1.24% and in bcl-2-positive ones, 0.47+/-0.42% (P = 0.014). The apoptotic index did not significantly associate with bcl-X, mcl-1, or bax expression (P = 0.19, P = 0.25, and P = 0.46, respectively). No significant difference was observed in apoptosis or expression of bcl-2, bcl-X, or bax between malignant mesotheliomas and metastatic adenocarcinomas. The former, however, showed more often weak mcl-1 immunoreactivity (P = 0.01). The results show that the extent of apoptosis may influence patient prognosis. bcl-2 is inversely associated with the apoptotic index but is relatively infrequently expressed in malignant mesotheliomas. Widespread expression of bcl-X, mcl-1, and bax suggests that these proteins may also take part in apoptosis regulation in mesotheliomas.

Cytochrome P4502A6 (CYP2A6) expression in human hepatocellular carcinoma.

The hepatic cytochrome P4502A6 (CYP2A6) enzyme mediates the oxidative metabolism of several procarcinogens that have liver as their primary target. Mouse models indicate that liver tumors invariably overexpress CYP2A forms, and that inflammation and cirrhosis may regulate the CYP2A expression pattern. In this study, the distribution of the CYP2A6 protein was investigated in a series of 24 human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) samples by immunohistochemical analysis. A polyclonal antibody was raised in chicken against CYP2A5, the mouse orthologue of CYP2A6. The antibody was characterized and found to be specific for CYP2A members. In DBA/2 mouse liver, a strong increase of CYP2A5 protein amount, localized in the perivenous region, occurred in response to treatment with pyrazole. In human HCC samples, overexpression of CYP2A6 protein was associated with the presence of chronic inflammation and cirrhosis. CYP2A6 protein was observed in 9 of 16 (56%) of samples with non-neoplastic hepatocytes and in 10 of 24 (42%) HCC samples. The staining for CYP2A6 protein was very heterogeneous in tumor cells, suggesting that increased expression of CYP2A6 occurred in a distinct subpopulation of neoplastic cells. In Kaplan-Meyer survival analysis, there was a tendency toward a more favorable prognosis in patients with CYP2A6-positive tumors in comparison with patients with CYP2A6-negative tumors. These data suggest that, in human HCC, in contrast to mouse liver tumors, CYP2A6 overexpression is not an invariable phenotype.

Tenascin is increased in epithelial lining fluid in fibrotic lung disorders.

Tenascin is an extracellular matrix glycoprotein increased immunohistochemically in tumorous and fibrotic lung tissues as demonstrated by immunohistochemistry. We hypothesized that in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid also the tenascin concentration would be elevated in patients with various fibrotic lung disorders. The aim of our study was to investigate whether BAL fluid tenascin would be increased compared with serum tenascin in patients with usual interstitial pneumonia (UIP), sarcoidosis, and extrinsic allergic bronchioloalveolitis. For this purpose BAL fluid was collected from five patients with UIP, 12 patients with sarcoidosis, five patients with extrinsic allergic bronchioloalveolitis, and six patients in a control group. BAL fluid and serum tenascin concentrations were detected by the enzyme immunoassay method. The BAL fluid results were expressed as tenascin concentrations in the epithelial lining fluid (ELF), as estimated by the urea method. The ELF tenascin concentration was increased in the patients with fibrotic lung disorders relative to the control group (mean 0.12 microg/ml) and was highest in the UIP group (mean 5.72 microg/ml) and sarcoidosis group (mean 4.76 microg/ml). It is concluded that the tenascin concentration in the ELF is increased in patients with UIP, sarcoidosis, and extrinsic allergic bronchioloalveolitis, suggesting active synthesis of tenascin in the lower respiratory tract in such disorders.

Crocidolite asbestos causes an induction of p53 and apoptosis in cultured A-549 lung carcinoma cells.

A number of genotoxic chemicals and agents, such as benzo(a)pyrene and ultraviolet light, are able to induce nuclear accumulation of p53 protein. Usually, this response is transient and a consequence of stabilization of the wild-type p53 protein. After withdrawal of the exposure, the amount of p53 protein returns to a normal level within hours or a few days. We have studied the p53 response to the exposure of crocidolite asbestos in A-549 lung carcinoma cells using three different methods, i.e., p53 immunohistochemistry, Western blotting and metabolic labelling followed by p53 immunoprecipitation. With these techniques we demonstrate a dose-dependent p53 nuclear response to crocidolite exposure. The half-life of p53 protein in A-549 lung carcinoma cells cultured in serum-free media increased from 30 up to 80 min, and the protein reacted with a wild-type specific antibody suggesting that it was in a wild-type conformation. In situ 3'-end labelling of A-549 cells demonstrated a dose-dependent increase in apoptotic activity. Our data support the idea that increased apoptotic activity, induced by crocidolite, is mediated by p53.

Increased numbers of alveolar macrophages with apoptotic bodies predict lung carcinoma.

In our previous study on fixed tissue blocks, we reported a high apoptotic rate in patients with operated small cell lung carcinomas. In addition to tumour cells, numerous apoptotic bodies could also be found within alveolar macrophages within and close to tumour tissue. In order to test if such cells could be found in sputum smears and if their presence could be utilized as a marker in tumour diagnosis, we analyzed the occurrence of alveolar macrophages with apoptotic bodies (AMWABs) in a set of sputum smear and BAL samples from patients with and without a pulmonary malignancy. An increased amount of AMWABs in the cytoplasm could be found in sputum and BAL samples from patients with lung cancer. Interestingly, AMWABs could also be seen in patients with a histologically confirmed pulmonary malignancy, but with no detectable tumour cells in their sputum smear. Thus, the presence AMWABs in sputum smears could serve as a more sensitive marker of pulmonary malignancy than the presence of malignant cells per se. This is the first report describing apoptotic bodies in macrophages and the utility of their detection in cancer diagnosis.

Apoptosis is inversely related to bcl-2 but not to bax expression in salivary gland tumours.

AIMS: We investigated the extent of apoptosis in 55 benign and malignant salivary gland tumours and its association with the immunohistochemical expression of bcl-2 and bax. METHODS AND RESULTS: Apoptosis was detected in histological sections by the 3'-end DNA labelling method. bcl-2 and bax protein expression was determined by immunohistochemistry. The frequency of apoptosis was clearly higher in malignant than in benign tumours. In pleomorphic adenomas and Warthin's tumours the average apoptotic index was 0.01% (range 0.00-0.07%) while in the malignant salivary gland tumours it was 0.42% (range 0.00-1.75%). Immunohistochemical bcl-2 expression was observed in all pleomorphic adenomas and Warthin's tumours and in most cases the expression was strong. In malignant tumours, 9/25 cases showed no expression and in the rest of the cases, apart from adenoid cystic carcinomas, the bcl-2 expression was often weak. There were significantly more cases with no or weak bcl-2 positivity in malignant than in benign salivary gland tumours (P = 0.001). There was a statistically significant association between a weak bcl-2 expression and a high frequency of apoptosis (P = 0.02). In contrast to bcl-2, strong bax expression was found in both benign and malignant tumours and was not associated with the frequency of apoptosis. CONCLUSIONS: The low bcl-2 expression in malignant tumours suggests that down-regulation of its expression might contribute to their higher frequency of apoptosis.

Apoptotic index and apoptosis influencing proteins bcl-2, mcl-1, bax and caspases 3, 6 and 8 in pancreatic carcinoma.

AIMS: To study the expression of bcl-2, bax and mcl-1 and caspases 3, 6 and 8 and apoptosis in pancreatic carcinoma. METHODS AND RESULTS: Eighty-seven pancreatic carcinomas were studied immunohistochemically with antibodies to bcl-2, mcl-1, bax and caspases 3, 6 and 8. Apoptosis was detected by the TUNEL method. bcl-2 and mcl-1 positivity was observed in 13% and 86% of the cases, while bax was observed in all of them. The bax immunoreactivity was weak in 30% of the tumours. Caspase 3, 6 and 8 immunoreactivity was observed in 80%, 80% and 74% of the cases, respectively. The staining was mainly cytoplasmic and diffuse, but sometimes also fragmented granular (mainly caspase 6) or membrane-associated (mainly caspase 8) staining was seen. The mean apoptotic index in pancreatic carcinomas was 0.69%. The apoptotic index in bcl-2 positive cases was lower (0.35%) than in cases showing no immunoreactivity (0.64%) (P = 0.013). The apoptotic index was higher in tumours with strong bax immunoreactivity (0.70%) than in the other cases (0.34%) (P = 0.002). There was no significant association between the apoptotic index and the expression of mcl-1 or caspases 3, 6 and 8. CONCLUSIONS: Both bcl-2 and bax influence the extent of apoptosis in pancreatic carcinoma. The strong expression of caspases 3, 6 and 8 in pancreatic carcinoma is evidence of the activation of the apoptotic machinery in malignant cells in pancreatic carcinoma and shows that the genes of these proteins are often upregulated in them.

High-grade malignant non-Hodgkin's lymphomas differ from low-grade lymphomas in the extent of apoptosis and their expression of bcl-2, mcl-1, bax and p53.

In this study, we investigated the extent of apoptosis in 82 non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and 4 reactive follicular hyperplasias and correlated the findings with the extent of apoptosis as determined by the 3'-end labelling method of the apoptotic DNA. To study the influence of apoptosis-regulating proteins bcl-2, bax, mcl-1 and p53 on the extent of apoptosis, we also immunostained the samples with antibodies to them. The results show that there is a significant difference in the extent of apoptosis between low- and high-grade non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, the latter on average showing considerably more apoptotic cells (0.38 +/- 0.30 and 1.44 +/- 1.35%, respectively; p = 0.001). In line with this difference, high-grade lymphomas had significantly more cases with a weak expression of bcl-2 and strong expression of bax (p = 0.00008 and p = 0.016, respectively). They also showed significantly more cases with a positive p53 immunoreactivity (p < 0.00001) and strong mcl-1 immunoreactivity (p = 0.018). The results suggest that apoptosis-affecting genes bcl-2, bax, mcl-1 and p53 all take part in the regulation of apoptosis in malignant non-Hodgkin's lymphomas and contribute to a different level of apoptosis between high- and low-grade non-Hodgkin's lymphomas.

Angiogenesis is associated with mononuclear inflammatory cells in abdominal aortic aneurysms.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: To evaluate the extent of neovascularisation in abdominal aortic aneurysms, specimens from the aneurysm walls of 17 consecutive patients (14 men, mean age 69 years, range 59 to 79 years) were studied and compared with specimens from patients with aortoiliac occlusive disease (n = 8, five men, mean age 53 years; range 40 to 71 years). Routine histology was performed after haematoxylin and eosin, Verhoeff's elastic and periodic acid-Schiff stainings. For immunophenotypic analysis of inflammatory cells four monoclonal mouse antibodies (UCHL1, L26, PG-M1 and KP1) were used. RESULTS: The histological sections through the walls of the AAAs showed extensive destruction of elastin and variable inflammation. Dense neovascularisation was seen throughout the aortic wall in the AAA cases compared to a mild angiogenetic response seen only occasionally in the AODs. CONCLUSIONS: Angiogenesis may play a significant role in the AAA process by recruiting and carrying a macrophage-rich infiltrate to the aortic wall.

p53 mutations in cyclophosphamide-associated bladder cancer.

Cyclophosphamide is a known bladder carcinogen, with cumulative dose directly related to increased risk. There is no consensus, however, on which major cyclophosphamide metabolite (i.e., acrolein or phosphoramide mustard) drives bladder carcinogenesis. We examined 19 cyclophosphamide-related bladder tumors to test the hypothesis that they might contain somatic mutations in the p53 tumor suppressor gene that could link a specific metabolite to the etiology of these cancers. Forty-three % (9 of 19) of the cases had a mutation in p53, with a predominance at G:C bp (7 of 9, 77%), a preference for non-CpG sites (6 of 7, 86%), and frequent G:C-->A:T transitions (5 of 7, 71%). The p53 mutation spectrum of these cyclophosphamide-associated bladder cancers differed significantly from patterns reported for sporadic (P = 0.020), smoking-related (0.043), and schistosomiasis-linked (P = 0.002) tumors but not arylamine-associated neoplasms (P = 0.860). Differences between the cyclophosphamide and arylamine-associated spectra included an unusual degree of clustering of exon 6 mutations (43% versus 17%, respectively) and an absence of multiple mutations in the former. Notably lacking in our series were G:C-->T:A transversions, the principal mutation associated with acrolein. Instead, the mutation spectrum matches the phosphoramide mustard adduction sequences determined by a repetitive primer-extension assay (P = 0.024), indicating that this metabolite might be a key mutagen in cyclophosphamide-related bladder cancer.

Apoptosis in operated small cell lung carcinoma is inversely related to tumour necrosis and p53 immunoreactivity.

The present study was undertaken to analyse the extent of apoptosis in operated small cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) by using in situ labelling of the oligonucleosomal DNA fragments by terminal transferase. The extent of apoptosis was compared with the cell proliferation activity, as determined by Ki-67 immunohistochemistry; with the volume density of necrosis (per cent), as determined by the morphometric point counting method; and with the occurrence of immunohistochemically detectable p53 and bcl-2 proteins. By in situ labelling, remarkably high apoptotic indices (from 0.08 to 8.10 per cent) were seen in SCLC. A high percentage of SCLSs also showed an exceptionally high proliferation activity. Aberrant accumulation of p53 protein was seen in 37.5 per cent and bel-2 overexpression in 50 per cent of SCLCs. Necrosis was seen in 82.5 per cent of SCLCs. The extent of apoptosis was inversely related to the extent of tumour necrosis (P = 0.05) and to p53 protein accumulation (P = 0.008). A positive association was found between the extent of apoptosis and bel-2 immunoreactivity (P = 0.02). The apoptotic indices (per cent) correlated with the age (P < 0.05) and total smoking time of the patients (P = 0.06).

Expression of messenger RNAs for metalloproteinases 2 and 9, type IV collagen, and laminin in nonneoplastic and neoplastic endometrium.

In this study, we analyzed the messenger RNA (mRNA) synthesis of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) 2 and 9, and their main substrates laminin and type IV collagen by in situ hybridization in nonneoplastic, hyperplastic, and neoplastic endometrial tissues. In nonneoplastic endometrium stromal synthesis of MMP2, laminin and type IV collagen messenger RNA (mRNA) could be detected throughout the cycle. Their synthesis was strongest in the late secretory and decidualized endometrium. In epithelial cells, only laminin mRNA synthesis was observed. MMP9 mRNA was expressed in only stromal and epithelial cells of the decidualized endometrium. In hyperplastic and neoplastic endometrium, the expression of MMP2, MMP9, laminin, and type IV collagen mRNA was variably present in stromal cells, whereas epithelial cells expressed only laminin mRNA, except for one case of a grade III carcinoma, which also showed signals for MMP2 and MMP9 mRNAs in the carcinoma cells. The presence of MMP2, laminin, and IV collagen mRNA in normal endometrium reflects their importance in the tissue response and matrix remodeling during the proliferative and secretory phases of the menstrual cycle. Their mRNA synthesis follows a similar pattern, suggesting that it is associated with hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle. According to the results, MMP9 does not participate in tissue remodeling during the secretory or proliferative phases, but like MMP2, it is found in the neoplastic endometrial stroma, suggesting that it contributes to the invasion of malignant endometrial cells.
