Evaluation of the economic and environmental impact of converting cropland to forest: a case study in Dunhua county, China.

The Sloping Land Conversion Program (also known as "Grain for Green" or the Upland Conversion Program) for converting cropland to forest is one of China's most ambitious environmental initiatives, and is one of the world's largest land-conservation programs with a budget of RMB 337 billion (over US$ 40 billion). Although environmental impacts have played a vital role in the general reasoning and argumentation for forest plantations, environmental impact analyses have often received less attention than economic analyses in the planning of plantation forestry projects. The overall goal of this paper is to evaluate the program's environmental impact considering the farmer's interests and the potential social benefits due to carbon sequestration in different scenarios based on household and field survey data in Dunhua County. Our findings are that: (1) in many cases, the program did not give adequate consideration to land productivity and environmental heterogeneity when selecting plots; (2) more than half of the reforestation plots were on flat cropland (slopes of less than 5 degrees ); (3) in five of the eight townships, net incomes on reforested land were substantially above or below previous crop incomes, raising questions about the efficiency of the allocation of compensation to farmers participating in the program; (4) the potential carbon co-benefit increased the NPV of the program by 5954-7009 RMB/ha. In conclusion, we recommend that more attention should be paid to the quality of reforestation programs rather than just their scale and note that consideration of potential carbon sequestration co-benefits enhances the benefits of cropland conversion programs.

Enhancing forest carbon sequestration in China: toward an integration of scientific and socio-economic perspectives.

This article serves as an introduction to this special issue, "China's Forest Carbon Sequestration", representing major results of a project sponsored by the Canadian International Development Agency and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. China occupies a pivotal position globally as a principle emitter of carbon dioxide, as host to some of the world's largest reforestation efforts, and as a key player in international negotiations aimed at reducing global greenhouse gas emission. The goals of this project are to develop remote sensing approaches for quantifying forest carbon balance in China in a transparent manner, and information and tools to support land-use decisions for enhanced carbon sequestration (CS) that are science based and economically and socially viable. The project consists of three components: (i) remote sensing and carbon modeling, (ii) forest and soil assessment, and (iii) integrated assessment of the socio-economic implications of CS via forest management. Articles included in this special issue are highlights of the results of each of these components.

An integrated assessment model of carbon sequestration benefits: a case study of Liping county, China.

This research attempts to model the complexity of planting trees to increase China's CO(2) sequestration potential by using a GIS-based integrated assessment (IA) approach. We use the IA model to assess the impact of China's Grain for Green reforestation and afforestation program on farmer and state incomes as well as CO(2) sequestration in Liping County, Guizhou Province. The IA model consists of five sub-models for carbon sequestration, crop income, timber income, Grain for Green, and carbon credits. It also includes a complementary qualitative module for assessing program impacts by gender and ethnicity. Using four scenarios with various assumptions about types of trees planted, crop incomes by township, CO(2) credit prices, state subsidies, methods for estimating carbon sequestered, and harvesting of trees, we find great variation in the impact of the Grain for Green program on incomes and on carbon sequestered over a 48 year period at both the county and township levels.

Social and economic impacts of carbon sequestration and land use change on peasant households in rural China: a case study of Liping, Guizhou Province.

Numerous innovative approaches to mitigate effects of excessive emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs) on global climate change are being proposed and formulated. Sequestering carbon to terrestrial ecosystems represents one of the important clean development mechanisms. Reforestation through converting various non-forest lands to forests is undoubtedly an important dimension of carbon sequestration. Using Liping County in Guizhou Province as a case region, this study examines the perceived change in social and economic livelihoods of peasants and the factors responsible for the variations in the changes. The results of the study reveal that socio-economic changes associated with the government-financed project are multifaceted and profound. Because of the financial subsidies provided by the central government, this environmental action in many aspects can be regarded as a poverty reduction measure in the underdeveloped area where rural poverty is widespread. A majority of peasant households have benefited from project participation. The land conversion project with continued financial support also contributes to the social transformations of traditional rural society in remote areas to a more mobile, less subsistence agriculture-based, and open society.

The costs and benefits of reforestation in Liping County, Guizhou Province, China.

Reducing greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is becoming a pressing issue for the global community. Afforestation and reforestation are promoted worldwide as an effective means of sequestering carbon. For its national interest and global concerns, China has made great efforts to protect its existing forests and develop programs of afforestation and reforestation. Based on two surveys recently conducted in Liping County, Guizhou province, this paper investigates the economic changes associated with the implementation of the "Grain For Green" policy. Based on the analytical framework of benefit cost analysis, this paper concludes that the implementation of the reforestation of sloping agricultural land policy would not be possible if there were no government subsidies for the peasants. The short term economic returns of land and labour from forestation are substantially lower than those generated from grain or cash crop production on the steep slope lands. The government subsidies provide great economic incentives for peasants to take part in the project. The subsidies in fact have elevated peasant income in rural Liping. The estimated potential economic returns of plantations over the long run indicate that the removal of the government financial subsidies would not create an economic crisis for the peasants if the current market conditions continue.

Social, economic, and ecological impacts of the "Grain for Green" project in China: a preliminary case in Zhangye, Northwest China.

This paper provides applications of the integrated assessment (IA) approach in a case study in the Heihe River Basin of Northwest China. Some socio-economic and ecological impact results of forestry land use scenarios are presented in the paper. While seven types of land use scenarios for carbon sequestration purposes were considered for the IA applications, this paper mainly presents impacts of land use scenarios within the Grain for Green (GFG) category [see Yin et al., this volume]. China's national Grain for Green Project was implemented in order to protect and improve ecosystems, while allowing an evolution of agricultural management practices compatible with raising peasants' incomes. Zhangye Prefecture, located in the Heihe River Basin of an arid area in Northwest China, was chosen as the investigation site of the IA case study. Based on fundamental orientation theory, the social sustainability impacts of GFG land use options were assessed. Between 2002 and 2004, the GFG project brought US$23.56 million yuan in net income to the prefecture's peasants. Project implementation resulted in a 1.71 Gg increase in net primary productivity (NPP), as well as a 44.36 Gg rise in net ecosystem productivity (NEP). This suggested that, in Zhangye Prefecture, the Grain for Green Project could enhance the sustainability and stability of the local society, increase peasants' net income, as well as protect and remediate local ecosystems.

Linking carbon sequestration science with local sustainability: an integrated assessment approach.

This paper introduces an integrated assessment (IA) approach for a Canada-China joint research project that linked forest carbon sequestration, forest resource management, and local sustainability enhancement. The purpose of the IA was to improve the measurement of carbon in different land uses and vegetation covers, as well as to direct decision makers to those land uses or options as an CO(2) emission reduction strategy while supporting rural sustainable development. In this connection, three questions are addressed in this paper: 1) How will forestry carbon sequestration land use policies affect regional sustainability prospects in rural China? 2) How could carbon sequestration land use plans be better integrated into sustainable development strategies? and 3) How can the IA approach assist Chinese government agencies in design effective forestry land use policies? The IA approach was applied in three rural sites of western China. These case studies are described in detail by following articles in this volume. The project improved the capacity of local resource managers in identifying the economic, social and environmental impacts of rural land use decisions that might increase carbon sequestration and enhance local livelihood.

Genetic analysis of calicivirus genomes detected in intestinal contents of piglets in Japan.

Enteric caliciviruses, noroviruses, and sapoviruses are emerging pathogens responsible for diarrhea or gastroenteritis in their respective hosts. In this study, swine enteric caliciviruses were detected in ten samples of intestinal contents from 24 piglets in Japan by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction using a broadly reactive primer pair (P290/289) that targeted the highly conserved RNA polymerase regions of the enteric caliciviruses. From the positive samples, the entire viral genome of strain K7/JP and 3'-end parts of the genomes of strains K5/JP and K10/JP were cloned and sequenced. K7/JP had an RNA genome of 7144 bases, excluding its 3' poly (A) tail. The K7/JP genome possessed two open reading frames and characteristics common to sapoviruses. In phylogenetic analysis using amino acid sequences of VP1, K5/JP was demonstrated to be close to the noroviruses previously detected in pigs, and K7/JP and K10/JP were considered to be classified as a new genogroup of sapoviruses.

Temperature dependence of the optical transition energies of carbon nanotubes: the role of electron-phonon coupling and thermal expansion.

Tunable Raman spectroscopy is used to measure the optical transition energies Eii of individual single wall carbon nanotubes. Eii is observed to shift down in energy by as much as 50 meV, from -160 to 300 degrees C, in contrast with previous measurements performed on nanotubes in alternate environments, which show upshifts and downshifts in Eii with temperature. We determine that electron-phonon coupling explains our experimental observations of nanotubes suspended in air, neglecting thermal expansion. In contrast, for nanotubes in surfactant or in bundles, thermal expansion of the nanotubes' environment exerts a nonisotropic pressure on the nanotube that dominates over the effect of electron-phonon coupling.

Stability similarities between shells, cells and nano carbon tubes.

The similarity in stability characteristics between multiscale circular cylindrical structures is revealed. Two detailed structures are explored. One is the circular cylindrical shell on an engineering scale, and another is the circular cylindrical lipid bilayer vesicle on a micro- or nanoscale. The critical stability of the vesicle acted on by uniformly distributed radial pressure is analysed. The critical load of the vesicle is derived and compared with that of the thin shell. The astonishing similarity between them is disclosed. The possible applications of such similarity to biophysics, biology and biomedicine are presented.

True ileal amino acid digestibility and endogenous ileal amino acid losses in growing pigs fed wheat shorts- or casein-based diets.

Use of dietary AA in growing pigs reflects digestion and use of digested AA for various body functions. Before evaluating dietary effects on use of digestible AA intake for body protein deposition, a digestibility study was conducted to investigate true ileal AA digestibility and endogenous ileal AA losses in growing pigs fed graded levels of wheat shorts (WS) or casein (CS; control). A casein-based basal diet (basal) was formulated to contain 0.27 g of standardized ileal digestible (SID) Lys per MJ of DE, to which extra Lys was added from WS (WS2, +0.10 g of SID Lys per MJ of DE; WS3, +0.20 g of SID Lys per MJ of DE) or casein (CS3, +0.20 g of SID Lys per MJ of DE). A fifth diet was formulated to be similar in CP level and source as CS3 but in which 6% pectin, a source of soluble non-starch polysaccharides (NSP), was included at the expense of cornstarch (CS3 + pectin). Five Yorkshire barrows (17.5 +/- 1.5 kg of BW) were fitted with a T-cannula at the distal ileum and randomly assigned to 1 of the 5 experimental diets in a 5 x 5 Latin Square design. Apparent ileal digestibility (AID), true ileal digestibility (TID), and endogenous ileal protein losses (EPL) were determined using the homoarginine method. Diet CS level did not influence (P > or = 0.10) TID of most essential AA or EPL (10.4 g/kg of DM intake). Including pectin in the diet did not influence TID of AA (P > or = 0.10) but increased EPL (15.6 g/kg of DM intake; P > or = 0.01). Inclusion of WS in the diet reduced TID of most essential AA (P < 0.01). The TID values for most essential AA, however, were the same (P > or = 0.10) for both dietary WS levels, except for Lys and Met, which were further reduced at the greatest dietary WS level. Increased EPL (P < 0.01) was only observed for WS3 (16 g/kg of DMI). We concluded that (1) the effects of dietary protein source on AID of AA can be attributed both to reduced TID of AA and increased EPL, (2) the impact of dietary WS level on TID of AA and EPL does not seem to be linear, (3) soluble NSP from pectin or WS exerts a greater effect on EPL than insoluble NSP, and (4) because of the metabolic cost associated with EPL and the impacts of feed composition on microbial fermentation in the gut lumen, the effects of feed ingredients on the use of ileal digestible AA for protein deposition should be investigated further.

Dielectric torque and orientation dynamics of liquid crystals with dielectric dispersion.

We demonstrate that the finite rate of dielectric relaxation in liquid crystals which has been ignored previously causes profound effects in the fast dielectric reorientation of the director. We propose a theory of dielectric response in which the electric displacement depends not only on the present (as in the standard theory) but also on the past values of electric field and director. We design an experiment with a dual-frequency nematic in which the standard "instantaneous" model and our model predict effects of opposite signs; the experimental data support the latter model.

Bioavailability of fluticasone propionate and mometasone furoate aqueous nasal sprays.

OBJECTIVES: To compare the systemic exposure for intranasal mometasone furoate (MF) and fluticasone propionate (FP) aqueous nasal sprays (ANS) in terms of serum and urinary cortisol parameters and plasma pharmacokinetics. METHODS: Twelve healthy subjects completed this three-way, cross-over study. They received FPANS (50 microg/spray), MFANS (50 microg/spray) or placebo ANS, eight sprays per nostril every 8 h for 4 days. Cortisol measurements were made at baseline and day 4. FP and MF plasma concentrations were also measured on day 4. RESULTS: MFANS produced similar mean plasma AUC (123 pmol/l h) to FPANS (112 pmol/l h). Despite the use of high doses, necessary to generate adequate pharmacokinetic data, only minor reductions in cortisol parameters were found, with no difference between FPANS and MFANS. CONCLUSIONS: FP and MF have similar and very low systemic bioavailability when administered intranasally using a high-dose regimen. It is therefore unlikely that therapeutic doses of intranasal FP or MF will produce dissimilar or significant degrees of systemic exposure or systemic effects.

Novel phenomena in the 13C NMR spectra of amino acids.

13C NMR integral areas and spin-lattice relaxation times (T1's) of a series of amino acids were determined at different concentrations. It was found that the spin-lattice relaxation times were markedly reduced in 3 M magnesium chloride resulting in the integral area being proportional to the number of carbon atoms producing each particular signal, with a reliability in excess of 95%. Magnesium chloride is proposed as a 13C NMR relaxation agent for amino acids.

Global structure and dynamics of human apolipoprotein CII in complex with micelles: evidence for increased mobility of the helix involved in the activation of lipoprotein lipase.

Apolipoprotein CII (apoCII), a surface constituent of plasma lipoproteins, is the activator for lipoprotein lipase (LPL) and is therefore central for lipid transport in blood. The three-dimensional structure of (13)C-, (15)N-enriched human full-length apoCII in complex with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) micelles is reported. In addition to the structure determination, (15)N-relaxation measurements have been performed at two magnetic fields to characterize the dynamics of the backbone of apoCII in the complex. The relaxation data also provided global structural constraints, viz. the orientation of helices in the complex. In addition, global constraints were derived from the fact that apoCII helices are attached to the surface of the SDS micelle and that the hydrophobic moments of each helix faces the interior of the micelle. These three categories of global constraints, together with the local classical NMR constraints, were sufficient to define the 3D structure of the apoCII-SDS micelle complex. To our knowledge, this presents the first example in which the global structure of a protein-SDS micelle complex has been determined. The C-terminal helix of apoCII is known to be responsible for the activation of LPL. This helix is distinguished from the other helices by a higher degree of internal motion on the nanosecond time scale as shown by the relaxation data. The overall structure and the internal dynamics, combined with previous mutation data, give important clues toward a possible mechanism for the activation of LPL by apoCII.

Do STD clinics correctly diagnose STDs? An assessment of STD management in Hefei, China.

The main purposes of the study were to assess the accuracy of laboratory testing and the diagnosis by physicians in sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinics in Hefei, China. Among 347 men complaining of urethral discharge or dysuria, 240 tested positive at the National Centre for either Neisseria gonorrhoeae or Chlamydia trachomatis, 310 tested positive according to the clinic laboratories, and 347 were diagnosed by the physicians. For chlamydia, the sensitivity and positive predictive value (PPV) of the clinic laboratories were 55% and 26%, and for the diagnosis by the physicians were 61% and 24%. Laboratory testing and the diagnosis by the physicians had low power to detect mixed infection. The PPVs for the diagnosis by the physicians were 50% for syphilis and 43% for herpes simplex virus (HSV), indicating that both syphilis and HSV were over-diagnosed. Over half of those previously infected had not received education to prevent reinfection. Thus, the quality of clinic laboratory testing was not high and physicians often misdiagnosed STDs.

One-week omeprazole, furazolidone and amoxicillin rescue therapy after failure of Helicobacter pylori eradication with standard triple therapies.

AIM: To test the efficacy of omeprazole, furazolidone and amoxicillin triple therapy for the treatment of Helicobacter pylori infection after failure of standard first-line therapy recommended by the Asia-Pacific Consensus on the management of H. pylori infection. METHODS: Patients with failed H. pylori eradication received omeprazole, 20 mg, furazolidone, 100 mg, and amoxicillin, 1 g, all twice daily for 1 week. Endoscopy (CLO test, histology and culture) was performed before treatment. Post-treatment H. pylori status was determined by 13C-urea breath test 6 weeks later. RESULTS: Fifty patients were recruited. Resistance to metronidazole, clarithromycin and both drugs was in the range of 50-64%, 60-75% and 40-50%, respectively, after failure of first-line therapy. Amoxicillin resistance was not found. The intention-to-treat and per protocol H. pylori eradication rates were 52% and 53%, respectively. Patients with double resistance to metronidazole and clarithromycin showed the lowest eradication rate (38%), which was significantly lower than that of patients with sensitive strains (88%). Side-effects were minimal and compliance was excellent (98%). CONCLUSIONS: One-week omeprazole, furazolidone and amoxicillin rescue therapy achieved a high eradication rate in strains sensitive to metronidazole and clarithromycin. This is a cheap and safe rescue regimen when guided by pre-treatment sensitivity testing.
