A bridge between pillared-layer and helical structures: a series of three-dimensional pillared coordination polymers with multiform helical chains.

Rational self-assembly of a long V-shaped 3,3',4,4'-benzophenonetetracarboxylate (bptc) ligand and metal salts in the presence of linear bidentate ligand yield a series of novel pillared helical-layer complexes, namely, [Cu2(bptc)(bpy)2] (1), [M3(Hbptc)2(bpy)3(H2O)4].2 H2O (M = Fe(2) and Ni(3)), [Co2(bptc)(bpy)(H2O)].0.5 bpy (4), [Cd2(bptc)(bpy)(H2O)2].H2O (5), [Mn2(bptc)(bpy)1.5(H2O)3] (6) and [M2(bptc)(bpy)0.5(H2O)5].0.5 bpy (M = Mn(7), Mg(8) and Co(9), bpy=4,4'-bipyridine). Their structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses and further characterized by elemental analyses, IR spectra, and thermogravimetric (TG) analyses. The structure of 1 consists of two types of chiral layers, one left-handed and the other right-handed, which are connected by bpy pillars to generate a novel 3D open framework featuring four distinct helical chains. Compounds 2 and 3 are isostructural and feature 3D structures formed from the interconnection of arm-shaped helical layers with bpy pillars. Compound 4 is a pillared helical double-layer complex containing four different types of helices, among which the nine-fold interwoven helices constructed from triple-stranded helical motifs are unprecedented. Compound 5 exhibits a novel 3D covalent framework which features nanosized tubular channels. These channels are built from helical layers pillared by bptc ligands. The structure of 6 is constructed from {Mn(bptc)(H2O)}n2n- layers, which consist of left- and right-handed helical chains, pillared by [Mn2(bpy)3(H2O)4]4+ complexes into a 3D framework. To the best of our knowledge, compounds 1-6 are the first examples of pillared helical-layer coordination polymers. Compounds 7-9 are isostructural and exhibit interesting 2D helical double-layer structures, which are constructed from {M(bptc)(H2O)2}n2n- ribbons cross-linked by [M2(bpy)(H2O)6]4+ complexes. Furthermore, the 3D supramolecular structures of 7-9 are similar to the 3D structure of 6, and the 2D structure of 7 can be transformed into the 3D structure of 6 at higher reaction temperature. By inspection of the structures of 1-9, it is believed that the V-shaped bptc ligand and V-shaped phthalic group of the bptc ligand are important for the formation of the helical structures. The magnetic behavior of compounds 1, 2, 4, 6, and 9 was studied and indicated the existence of antiferromagnetic interactions. Moreover, compound 5 shows intense photoluminescence at room temperature.

Slow relaxation in a one-dimensional rational assembly of antiferromagnetically coupled [Mn4] single-molecule magnets.

Four discrete Mn(III)/Mn(II) tetranuclear complexes with a double-cuboidal core, [Mn(4)(hmp)(6)(CH(3)CN)(2)(H(2)O)(4)](ClO(4))(4).2CH(3)CN (1), [Mn(4)(hmp)(6)(H(2)O)(4)](ClO(4))(4).2H(2)O (2), [Mn(4)(hmp)(6)(H(2)O)(2)(NO(3))(2)](ClO(4))(2).4H(2)O (3), and [Mn(4)(hmp)(6)(Hhmp)(2)](ClO(4))(4).2CH(3)CN (4), were synthesized by reaction of Hhmp (2-hydroxymethylpyridine) with Mn(ClO(4))(2).6H(2)O in the presence of tetraethylammonium hydroxide and subsequent addition of NaNO(3) (3) or an excess of Hhmp (4). Direct current (dc) magnetic measurements show that both Mn(2+)-Mn(3+) and Mn(3+)-Mn(3+) magnetic interactions are ferromagnetic in 1-3 leading to an S(T) = 9 ground state for the Mn(4) unit. Furthermore, these complexes are single-molecule magnets (SMMs) clearly showing both thermally activated and ground-state tunneling regimes. Slight changes in the [Mn(4)] core geometry result in an S(T) = 1 ground state in 4. A one-dimensional assembly of [Mn(4)] units, catena-{[Mn(4)(hmp)(6)(N(3))(2)](ClO(4))(2)} (5), was obtained in the same synthetic conditions with the subsequent addition of NaN(3). Double chairlike N(3)(-) bridges connect identical [Mn(4)] units into a chain arrangement. This material behaves as an Ising assembly of S(T) = 9 tetramers weakly antiferromagnetically coupled. Slow relaxation of the magnetization is observed at low temperature for the first time in an antiferromagnetic chain, following an activated behavior with Delta(tau)/k(B) = 47 K and tau(0) = 7 x 10(-)(11) s. The observation of this original thermally activated relaxation process is induced by finite-size effects and in particular by the noncompensation of spins in segments of odd-number units. Generalizing the known theories on the dynamic properties of polydisperse finite segments of antiferromagnetically coupled Ising spins, the theoretical expressions of the characteristic energy gaps Delta(xi) and Delta(tau) were estimated and successfully compared to the experimental values.

Rationally designed, polymeric, extended metal-ciprofloxacin complexes.

Reactions of the antimicrobial fluoroquinolone ciprofloxacin (cfH) with metal salts in the presence of aromatic polycarboxylate ligands or under basic conditions produce fourteen new metal-cfH complexes, namely, [Ba2(cf)2(1,4-bdc)(H2O)2] x H2O (1), [Sr6(cf)6(1,4-bdc)3(H2O)6] x 2H2O (2), [M2(cfH)2(bptc)(H2O)2] x 8H2O (M = Mn3 and Cd4), [M(cfH)(1,3-bdc)] (M = Mn5, Co6, and Zn7), [Zn2(cfH)4(1,4-bdc)](1,4-bdc) x 13H2O (8), [Ca(cfH)2(1,2-Hbdc)2] x 2H2O (9) and [M(cf)2] x 2.5H2O (M = Mn10, Co11, Zn12, Cd13, and Mg14) (1,4-bdc = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate, bptc = 3,3',4,4'-benzophenonetetracarboxylate, 1,3-bdc = 1,3-benzenedicarboxylate, 1,2-bdc = 1,2-benzenedicarboxylate). Their structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses and further characterized by elemental analyses, IR spectra, and thermogravimetric analyses. The structures of 1 and 2 consist of unique two-dimensional arm-shaped layers. Compounds 3 and 4 are isostructural and feature one-dimensional structures formed from the interconnection of [M2(cfH)2(H2O)2] dimers with bptc ligands. Compounds 5-7 are isostructural and contain double-chain-like ribbons constructed from [M2(cfH)2(CO2)2] dimers and 1,3-bdc. Compound 8 consists of a pair of [Zn(cfH)2]2+ fragments bridged by a 1,4-bdc into a dinuclear dumbbell structure. Compound 9 is a neutral monomeric complex. To the best of our knowledge, compounds 1-9 are the first examples of metal-quinolone complexes that contain aromatic polycarboxylate ligands. Compounds 10-14 are isostructural and exhibit interesting two-dimensional rhombic grids featuring large cavities with dimensions of 13.6x13.6 A. Up to now, polymeric extended metal-cfH complexes have never been reported.

Quantum tunneling and quantum phase interference in a [Mn(II)2Mn(III)2] single-molecule magnet.

[Mn4(hmp)6(H2O)2(NO3)2](NO3)2.2.5H2O (1) has been synthesized from the reaction of 2-hydroxymethylpyridine (Hhmp) with Mn(NO3)2.4H2O in the presence of tetraethylammonium hydroxide. 1 crystallizes in the triclinic P space group with two crystallographically independent centrosymmetrical [Mn4(hmp)6(H2O)2(NO3)2]2+ complexes in the packing structure. Four Mn ions are arranged in a double-cuboidal fashion where outer Mn2+ are heptacoordinated and inner Mn3+ are hexacoordinated. dc magnetic measurements show that both Mn2+...Mn3+ and Mn3+...Mn3+ interactions are ferromagnetic with J(wb)/k(B) = +0.80(5) K, and J(bb)/k(B) = +7.1(1) K, respectively, leading to an S(T) = 9 ground state. Combined ac and dc measurements reveal the single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior of 1 with both thermally activated and ground-state tunneling regimes, including quantum phase interference. In the thermally activated regime, the characteristic relaxation time (tau) of the system follows an Arrhenius law with tau0 = 6.7 x 10(-)(9) s and delta(eff)/k(B) = 20.9 K. Below 0.34 K, tau saturates indicating that the quantum tunneling of the magnetization becomes the dominant relaxation process as expected for SMMs. Down to 0.04 K, field dependence of the magnetization measured using the mu-SQUID technique shows the presence of very weak inter-SMM interactions (zJ'/k(B) approximately -1.5 x 10(-3) K) and allows an estimation of D/k(B) at -0.35 K. Quantum phase interference has been used to confirm the D value and to estimate the transverse anisotropic parameter to E/k(B) = +0.083 K and the ground-state tunnel splitting delta(LZ) = 3 x 10(-7) K at H(trans) = 0 Oe. These results rationalize the observed tunneling time (tau(QTM)) and the effective energy barrier (delta(eff)).

Three-dimensional mesomeric networks assembled from helix-linked sheets: syntheses, structures, and magnetisms.

Two new three-dimensional nickel coordination polymers, [Ni3(BTC)2(4,4'-bpy)2(H2O)5].1.5H2O (1) and [Ni(PDB)(4,4'-bpy)].0.5H2O (2)(4,4'-bpy = bipyridine, BTC = 1,2,4-benzenetricarboxylate, PDB = pyridine-3,4-dicarboxylate), have been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, TGA, and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Both compounds contain 2D scaffolding motifs, and most interestingly adjacent scaffolds are connected by infinite helical chains into unique three-dimensional mesomeric networks. Moreover, temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibilities for the two compounds were studied, and ferromagnetic interactions through syn-anti carboxylate bridges between Ni sites have been observed.
