Phosphate removal from aqueous solutions using raw and activated red mud and fly ash.

The effect of acidification and heat treatment of raw red mud (RM) and fly ash (FA) on the sorption of phosphate was studied in parallel experiments. The result shows that a higher efficiency of phosphate removal was acquired by the activated samples than by the raw ones. The sample prepared by using the RM stirred with 0.25 M HCl for 2h (RM0.25), as well as another sample prepared by heating the RM at 700 degrees C for 2h (RM700), registered the maximum removal of phosphate (99% removal of phosphate). This occurred when they were used in the phosphate sorption studies conducted at pH 7.0 and 25 degrees C with the initial PO(4)(3-) concentration of 155 mg P/l. The FA samples treated in the same way described above can achieve 7.0 and 8.2 mg P/l phosphate removal for FA0.25 and FA700 respectively, corresponding to 45.2% and 52.9% removal. The activated materials performed higher phosphate removal over broader pH range compared with the raw ones. The influences of various factors, such as initial pH and initial phosphate concentration on the sorption capacity were also studied in batch equilibration technique. Solution pH significantly influenced the sorption. Each sample achieved the maximal removal of phosphate at pH 7.0. The amount of phosphate removal increased with the solute concentration. The Freundlich and Langmuir models were used to simulate the sorption equilibrium. The results indicate that the Langmuir model has a better correlation with the experimental data than the Freundlich model.

[Expression of cell adhesion molecule and nitric oxide synthase in nasal mucosa in allergic rhinitis].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the role of cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) and nitric oxide synthase (NOS) in the pathological mechanism of allergic rhinitis. METHOD: Three kinds of CAMs, which are intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), vascular cellular adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) and lymphocyte function antigen-1 (LFA-1), as well as three kinds of NOS, which are neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS), inducible isoform of nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) were orthotopic detected by strept avidin-biotin complex (SABC) immunohistochemistry method in 40 cases of inferior nasal concha of allergic rhinitis. RESULT: There are only small number of ICAM-1, VCAM-1 and LFA-1 positive cells in the normal concha mucosa epithelial but more positive cells in allergic rhinitis. The number of positive cell of ICAM-1, LFA-1, VCAM-1 in the concha mucosa was [(14.4+/-2.2), (17.2+/-3.3), (11.5+/-2.7) per scope (x400) +/-s] respectively; in the control group the number of positive cell of ICAM-1, LFA-1, VCAM-1 in the concha mucosa was (8.7+/-1.8), (10.3+/-2.1), (6.9+/-1.8) respectively. The statistic differences were significant (t = 11.57, 10.02, 8.07 respectively; P<0.01). A certain number of nNOS positive cells were found in the concha mucosa in allergic rhinitis patients, it was mainly expressed in mucosa epithelial and submucosa glandular; a large number of iNOS positive cells were found in the concha mucosa in allergic rhinitis patients, iNOS was mainly expressed in mucosa epithelial, submucosa glandular, endothelial and submucosa inflammatory cell; the number of eNOS positive cell was few. In the normal control, few positive cells of nNOS, iNOS or eNOS could be found. Between the allergic rhinitis patients and the normal control, the number of nNOS positive cell was [(9.4+/-1.7), (4.7+/-1.3) per scope (x400)] respectively, t = 12.62 (P<0.01); the number of iNOS positive cell was (27.5+/-3.2), (4.3+/-1.7) respectively, t = 36.03 (P<0.01) the number of eNOS positive cell was (6.5+/-2.1), (6.2+/-1.9) respectively, t = 0.62 (P>0.05). CONCLUSION: These adhesion molecules might be involved in edema, exudation and infiltration of inflammatory cells of nasal mucosa in allergic rhinitis patients. The number of nNOS, iNOS positive cell in inferior concha mucosa in allergic rhinitis patients was significant higher than in normal control. It suggests that nNOS and iNOS might be involved in the pathogenesis of allergic rhinitis.

[Change of oxygen free radical in patients with obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome after the operation of uvulopalatopharyngoplasty].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the mechanism of multiple organ dysfunction in patients with obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) by observing the change of SOD,GSH-PX and MDA after uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP). METHOD: Colorimetric method was used to examine both the activity of SOD,GSH-PX and the content of MDA before and one month after UPPP in 30 patients with OSAHS. Thirty healthy people were chosen as normal control. RESULT: Before UPPP, the activity of SOD, GSH-PX and the content of MDA were (106.3 +/- 41.2) nmol/L (compared with the control group, P < 0.05), (61.8 +/- 6.5) kU/L (P < 0.05) and (6.27 +/- 1.73) mmol/L (P < 0.05) respectively; yet after the operation, the results were(128.5 +/- 33.1) nmol/L (compared with the control group, P > 0.05), (64.6 +/- 6.1) kU/L (P > 0.05) and (1.32 +/- 0.58) mmol/L (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: The metabolism of oxygen free radical was badly imbalanced in patients with OSAHS, yet one month after UPPP, it was recovered to normal. This suggested that the metabolism imbalance of oxygen free radical was contributed to multiple organ dysfunction in such patients.

[Study on the polymorphism of angiotensin converting enzyme genes and serum angiotensin II level in patients with obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome accompanied hypertension].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the relationship of the ACE gene insertion/deletion (I/D) polymorphism and the rennin-angiotensin system in the pathogenesis of hypertension in OSAHS. METHOD: Gene DNA was extracted from blood samples and amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The distribution of.the ACE gene I/D allele and genotypes were analyzed in 30 OSAHS with hypertension patients, 30 normotensive OSAHS patients and 30 healthy control group without cardiovascular diseases. The serum level of angiotensin II were also measured in all subjects by angiotensin II enzyme immunoassay kit. RESULT: The frequency of II genotype and I allele were significantly higher in the OSAHS accompanied hypertension patients than those in the healthy controls (chi2=9.88, chi2=16.13, P<0.01, respectively) and in the normotensive OSAHS patients (chi2=5.67, P<0.05, chi2=8.61, P<0.01). The frequency of II genotype and I allele had no significantly different between the normotensive OSAHS patients and the healthy controls (P>0.05). The serum level of angiotensin II was significantly higher in both OSAHS patients with and without hypertension than that in the healthy control (t=3.66, t=3.23, respectively P<0.01). Whereas the serum level of angiotensin II have no significantly different in the OSAHS patients with and without hypertension (P>0.05). CONCLUSION: These results indicate that the higher frequency of ACE gene I allele and genotype are closely associated with OSAHS patients accompanied hypertension. It is one of the important risk factors for the genesis of hypertension in OSAHS. The activity of rennin-angiotension system is higher in the OSAHS may have contribute to OSAHS-induced hypertension.

Selective preparation of pyridines, pyridones, and iminopyridines from two different alkynes via azazirconacycles.

Selective preparation of pyridine derivatives from two different alkynes and a nitrile was achieved by a novel procedure in which an alkyne and a nitrile couple first to give an azazirconacyclopentadiene followed by reaction with the second alkyne in the presence of 1 equiv of NiCl(2)(PPh(3))(2). This procedure gives only single products of pyridine derivatives from two different symmetrical alkynes and a nitrile. Our novel procedure can be used even with two similar alkyl-substituted alkynes such as 3-hexyne and 4-octyne. Two possible pyridine isomers from 3-hexyne, 4-octyne, and acetonitrile could be completely and independently prepared as single products by this method. The origin of the selectivity comes from the addition order of two different alkynes. This method was applied for the formation of pyridones and iminopyridines using isocyanate and carbodiimide derivatives instead of nitriles, respectively. Reaction of an alkyne with Cp(2)ZrEt(2) and an isocyanate or a carbodiimide gives an azazirconacycle. Treatment of the azazirconacycle with the second alkyne in the presence of 1 equiv of NiCl(2)(PPh(3))(2) gave a pyridone or an iminopyridine derivative. The use of two different unsymmetrical alkynes afforded the pyridine with five different substituents when the first alkyne has a trialkylsilyl group and the second alkyne has a phenyl group as functional groups. On the other hand, azazirconacyclopentadienes reacted with propargyl bromide in the presence of CuCl with excellent regioselectivity to give tetrasubstituted pyridine derivatives as single products. With the assistance of the trialkylsilyl groups, pyridines with all different substituents including H were also prepared.

Reactions of zirconacyclopentadienes with C [double bond] ), C [double bond] N, and N [double bond] N moieties with electron-withdrawing groups: formation of six-membered heterocycles.

Reactions of zirconacyclopentadienes with diethyl ketomalonate gave alpha-pyrans in excellent yields in the presence of BiCl3. In the absence of BiCl3, zirconacyclopentadienes did not react with diethyl ketomalonate. Tetraphenylzirconacyclopentadiene reacted with diethyl ketomalonate in the presence of BiCl3 to give a ring-opening product, dienolic ether, in 53% yield. The structures of the alpha-pyran prepared from diethyldiphenylzirconacyclopentadiene and the ring-opening product were determined by X-ray analysis. When oximinosulfonate was added to tetraethylzirconacyclopentadiene in THF at -78 degrees C, 3,4,5,6-tetraethylpyridine-2-carbonitrile was obtained in 95% yield within 10 min. The structure of the product was confirmed by X-ray analysis. When tetraethylzirconacyclopentadiene was treated with azodicarboxylate in the presence of 2 equiv of CuCl at -78 degrees C, 1,2-dialkoxycarbonyl-3,4,5,6-tetraethyl-1,2-dihydropyridazine derivatives were obtained. The structure of one of dihydropyridazine was also confirmed by X-ray analysis.

Coupling reaction of zirconacyclopentadienes with dihalonaphthalenes and dihalopyridines: a new procedure for the preparation of substituted anthracenes, quinolines, and isoquinolines.

Reactions of tetraiodobenzene with zirconacyclopentadienes, which were conveniently prepared from two alkynes (or diynes) and zirconocene complexes, afforded 1,2,3,4-tetrasubstituted diiodonaphthalene derivatives in good isolated yields. These 1,2,3,4-tetrasubstituted diiodonaphthalene derivatives could be converted to 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8-octasubstituted anthracene derivatives by reaction with a second zirconacyclopentadiene. When the two zirconacyclopentadienes were different, unsymmetrical anthracenes such as 1,2,3,4-tetraethyl-5,6,7,8-tetraphenylanthracene (68% isolated yield) were obtained. On the other hand, treatment of a 2,3-dihalopyridine such as 2-bromo-3-iodopyridine with zirconacyclopentadienes gave 5,6,7,8-tetrasubstituted quinoline derivatives in good to high yields. 3,4-dihalopyridines such as 4-chloro-3-iodopyridine reacted with zirconacyclopentadienes to afford 5,6,7,8-tetrasubstituted isoquinoline derivatives in good to high yields.
